Post by: bashwolf on March 27, 2002, 04:58:27 PM
Hiya all,

I just checked out Dells Inspiron 8200 it has P4 1.6 Gig and 1.7 Gig with 64 mb video card.  A possible alt to desktop for gaming and work.  The price is bit steep but in few months it be down :)

Check also 8000-8100 - they have 1-1.2GHz PIIIs and 32MB GF2Go - and are fully flyable in AH/WB/IL2. I took mine to Eurocon - no need to drag heavy boxes/monitors. 2xUSB ports are just enough for mouse/USB FFB2:).

The only way one can justify extra cost of P IV etc would be for mobile gaming since you won't be able to see any difference in normal applications:D.

Some silly person at work (I think it was me) bought me an Inspiron 8100 with a 1.2G PIII.  Now I'm going to have to see what kind of frame rates I get from it...

I will wait 1-2 month to get the one with 64mb but 1.2PIII comes with Gforce4 Go I would prefer that and cheaper than P4 at moment.  Puck Let me know how it turns out.  Thank Youy all for responds.

Hehe Puck - been there, done that;).

It is actually quite amazing how a GF2Go turned a laptop into a proper mobile gaming machine (I take with me MS FFB2 USB). With a DVD drive it's a proper mobile entertainmnt center as well - you can pay games, watch movies and... err... work too:D.

Bash - whatever you do do not "economize" on a HD size. I felt guilty (idiot) since the company was buying a gaming machine for me so didn't go for bigger HD. 10GB does not cut the mustard nowadays. XP Pro install "swallowed" ~ 2.5GB of it and now I'm looking on eBay for a media bay Inspiron HD :(. False economy it turned out to be...

Gentlmen Gentlemen......

I have got to be THE Air Warrior/AH addict.  I purchased a Sager 166 mmx for air warrior years ago just to play the game on the road when the good ole USAF sends me away like it does.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 8000 at 850 Mhz a year ago and absolutely love it!

Great screen, rugged computer, framerates at 1024x768 and 32 bit and I am in the 40's to 50's most of the time while flying.

It rocks...and when my Dell 2.0 gig was being built and my Sony 500 Mhz went on the fritz I laptopped it.

The only drawback is that it does not have a gameport for the joystick...not a problem because I use the USB adapter for my MS Sidewinder Prec Pro.

I have looked at alot of laptops for gaming (true addict) and by far the Dell Inspiron series took the cake.....:D
