They said a few weeks ago that if we go for the death penalty with this dirtbag that they are out of the war on terrorism. It begs for the question, were they ever in?

Like who really ever needs France?

I mean they actually think Jerry Lewis is funny.

France is the "Roundheels" of the World.

(The above is, of course, a personal opinion and not subject to change and of no value in the scheme of things and may be disregarded as needed.)

I do enjoy bashin' France though.

Canada refuses to extradite criminals who might face the death penalty also. (remember Charles Eng?) If Canada or France finds the death penalty to be against their constitution then more power to them. Someday capital punishment will be banned universally much like torture is banned now (unless you consider reading some of these threads torture, in which case it still goes on)

Yeah,I remember Charles...If you are handsomehunk enough to commit murder in another country with capitol punishment, don't seek asylum here..Back you go.

The French long ago ruined any credibility they have with the U.S. as supposed "Allies".  They are allowed to "play" only because of NATO/U.N.  They havn't pulled any "knife-in-the-back" moves on the U.S. since 9/11  ...yet.  It's coming, we all know it.

Actually the French Government has been pretty consistant on where they stand. They didn't allow the US to use French airspace when we bombed Ghadafy, and although it made for a longer mission we bombed him none the less.

They've always been pretty clear about their agenda, and rather you agree or not you have to admit that they are 1) a sovereign nation, thus not under the control or direction of the USA or NATO, and 2) they don't stab us in the back with their stances, rather they ossasionally slap us in the face.

Agree with their policies or not, you must agree with their right to govern themselves. If the French don't march in lock-step with so much of the rest of the Western world then that is their right. And plus, they DID give us that cool statue....and oral sex... hey, ya gotta like that.

The French nation is an ungreatful little toad that does not deserve the right to disagree with with US policy for the next few decades yet. If it wasn't for the USA France would no longer exist as a sovereign nation!

Anyway whenever anyone brings up modern day France and military matters all I can think of is 6 weeks, and that clip of the Wehrmacht marching down the Champs Elysees by the Arc de Triomphe in June 1940. :D

Maybe the army was on strike back then who knows?

Grunherz-

C'mon, that's way oversimplifying things. Sure, we helped restore France as a sovereign nation, but we didn't do it alone (not even close!). And truthfully, but for a brilliant flanking maneuver and a lack of cooperation between the Brits and the French those six weeks might have been completely different. Immaterial, anyway.

Does France have the right to pursue whatever course it chooses? Of course, just as we do. If France decides to conduct war on another country, are we bound to join in? No. The fact is, had we not been attacked on 9/11 we would not be attacking the al Queda even now- the political pressure against it would be overwhelming. Do you think there is any less political pressure from the populace in France? In Britain or Canada, for that matter?

Fact is, these types of unions are always tenuous, especially if a populace cannot see a direct threat to their way of life. Absent such a threat, the unions always balance on the edge of the knife. That's world politics; how do you get what you need from other countries in a way that doesn't created chaos and discord in their countries?

I don't look at any country pulling out of the war on terrorism as betrayal; in fact, I see the inevitability of such events. What I see is the need to hurt the al Queda as much as possible while we can, and keep them under a watchful eye afterwards. When we feel the threat is high, we go back in, help or no.

Here's a spoiler for ya......

Quote
French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine said that while his country stands "solidly" with the United States in the war on terrorism, any evidence France gives to American authorities "may not be used as the basis for seeking the death penalty, a verdict or sentence to that end."

Darn French...hey wait, they just feel the same as many of our own States......well, darn them too. And darn anyone who ticks me off when all I read are the headlines. darnit.

The great irony of the whole ordeal...

Most of the more feared weapons in use in the Middle east were sold to them by the U.S. or France.

I still laugh at anyone that gives France "kudos" for not wanting to offend weapons customers.

Oh yeah..THAT'S it! The French allow their own people to be the victims of terrorism so they can continue selling weapons to terrorists! After all, what sane right thinking citizen of the Western World could possibly be opposed to the death penalty?

Terrorisum is an eveyday reality in France for years, our involvement on the mater is not to be proven. Too bad it took a Sept11 to finally have Americans join the effort.

Udie, insults appart, your lack of general knowledge of other cultures, associated with a quick judgement/irony on subjects you don't master qualifies you as a moron.

Forget it Frenchie. Udie's knowledge of the outside world amounts to the occasional CNN soundbite. His opinions  are generally formulated from various articles written by one right-wing reactionary or another.

And remember - Terrorism didn't exist before Sept 11th!

Frenchy, Dowding,

For a couple of guy who think they know what they are talking about, you sure don't show it.  You know nothing about me and what I do or don't know/understand.

You guys aren't worth the trouble for a witty reply...

Take a look in the mirror froggy and you might need a bath.  You stink of hypocracy! Just like you're country of birth....... :D

:)

That was a pretty weak personal attack.  Lesson to you,  for a personal attack to sting/hurt/work/not make you look like an idiot it must be based at least partialy on reality.  I would have thought such an enlightened open minded french man like yourself would understand that.  Then again I didn't know you were an amazinhunk until today so...........

France is indeed a sovereign nation.  So are we.  They can choose their actions.  We can choose our friends.

Personally I don't consider them an ally in any sense of the word.  The Libyan overflight thing was a disgrace IMO.  That's the kind of thing I expect from a country like Saudi Arabia or India, not a NATO ally.  The only time I hear about them in the news is when they question our death penalty, or they complain about our trade policies, or they whine about our intrusion upon their popular culture, or they have a list of conditions for their petty contributions to whatever conflict that we and Great Britain are for the most part waging ourselves.

So let them be as sovereign and independent as they want.  Their problems, good or bad, are no longer a concern to me, nor increasingly to a lot of other Americans.

Bah, whatever, this is all meaningless.  At the heart of the issue is the fact that French people like Dowding, Frenchie, Straffo & Minus are all stinky, baby eating, white flag-waving, Jerry Lewis loving smoking winos who need to shave.  French people suck, stay away from them.
