Title: FRIDAY TOD RESUMES -- APRIL 12th
Post by: skernsk on March 30, 2002, 02:43:16 PM
I got an e-mail from the "boss" a few days ago that the Friday TOD will be resuming on April 12th.  We have not done a Norway TOD so that is the one that is selected.

It is based in mid 1944 and will incorporate several variants of aircraft.  In order to simplify the planeset I left several aircraft that could be available out.  I also plan to work on a moving front in this TOD as flight times can be extremely long on this map without the aid of CV's.

Criteria for choosing where the front is will be based on damage inflicted as well as playability.  Also, the objective scoring will not be utilized in this TOD, so it will be the same types of objectives (I will do my best to make them interesting).

One last thing....perk planes are not in the write-up, but they "may" appear in small numbers throughout the TOD.

Here is some info on the TOD.

Norwegians were surprised and unprepared when Nazi Germany, with its superior military might, attacked Norway on 9 April 1940. The general public, and their political leaders, had believed that Norway would be able to stay out of the second world war, just as the country had maintained its neutrality in World War I. They believed that Norway was strategically on the periphery, protected by British naval power, and thought that Norwegian neutrality was also in the interests of the warring nations on both sides.

The Norwegian neutrality proved to be of little consequence. Strategic interests led both sides to make plans which involved violations of Norwegian boundaries and operations on Norwegian territory. From mid-December 1939, both the German and Allied sides analyzed scenarios involving operations in Scandinavia.

Underground military groups were established in parallel with civilian resistance, and a prime objective was to assist in the Allied and Norwegian intelligence operations. The groups were useful in reporting the movements of German vessels and the transport of troops and material, especially in connection with the battles around the Soviet Kola peninsula.

In November 1944, Norwegian intelligence was heavily responsible for the sinking of the 41,700 tonne battleship Tirpitz in a fjord not far from Tromsø. When progress was eventually made in arming the underground Norwegian groups, often by parachute drops from Allied aircraft and supplies from the Shetland bus, the military groups became more of a problem for the Germans. When the war ended, the underground resistance forces consisted of 44,000 soldiers.

As the German collapse drew near, there was serious concern about the choice of tactics, which the occupying troops in Norway would choose. But it ended well - the German commander in chief, General Böhme, followed the capitulation orders which he had received from his superiors in Germany on 7 May, 1945. A day later, an Allied mission flew into Oslo, followed by Allied and Norwegian military detachments. In time, power was transferred back to the right hands. The Government returned home from Great Britain and on 7 June, 1945, King Haakon followed.

Do we choose in this thread? If so, the Shills would like to fly allied in this TOD. Thanks for the writeup, it looks like this will be a very interesting twist on the ETO planeset. I'm looking forward to the USN Aircraft Vs. Luftwaffe Iron.

We flew axis last time, so we would prefer allied.  However, if you need us to fly axis or even switch sides during the scenario, no problem -- we'll do it.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record:

Please check your numbers and update your roster if necessary.  I will be choosing sides and Frame C.O's this week and the Frame 1 orders will go out Sunday evening.

Frame C.O.'s

Please try and have your orders out to your side by Wednesday so that your fellow squad C.O's can brief their men (and women).

Thanks.

412th is hoping TOD staff remembers promise of letting them choose their ride for an upcoming TOD because of all the nasty LW they had to fly in previous tours.

412th FS "Braunco Mustangs" would very much like to saddle up in P-51s this time.

The planes are set by the CO's.  If you are Allied you still go where the Frame CO puts ya.

As for the side...I'll see what I can do.
