Title: What music to you play in background?
Post by: Badger on April 19, 2000, 11:09:00 AM
Someone asked me once, what background music do I like to play when enjoying my addiction to Aces High.

Well, I used to play Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries", which I'm sure many of you remember as being popularized in the movie, "Apocalypse Now".

Lately, since AH released the ground vehicles, I have switched to an old tank marching tune called Panzerlied.  When I was a young warrior in the Canadian Armored Corps back in the early 60's, my very first Troop Sergeant's name was Pottkamper.  You guessed it.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)  He was a re-tread and re-mustered German Panzer driver from WWII and of course, his favorite song was Panzerlied.  The daily march to get to our tank compound was about 3 miles, so he taught us this song to sing along the way, complete with German words.  It also was later popularized in a Hollywood movie titled "The Battle of the Bulge".  One day, an old British Colonel got so upset that we were singing a German military song, we all got 5 days of extra duty and old Sgt. Pottkamper got 3 days in the guard house.  After that, we still used to sing it anyway, except we watched for that old Colonel before we struck up the chorus.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I still remember this song like it was yesterday and often sing it in the shower.  I found a copy on-line, which for some reason is complete with explosions and sound effects.  I've had it going lately in the background on my stereo as I do battle in our trusty AH variety Panzer IV's.  My wife came downstairs last night as I was slugging it out with SUPERFLY and NATEDOG in Panzer battle, with Panzerlied blaring loudly.  She remarked, "are you having a mid life crisis or something?"   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Well, that certainly burst my bubble of realism.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Anyway, for any of you tankers out there who want to really get into it while driving your Panzer IV, here's a link to the German Army Chorus singing Panzerlied.  There's a WAV file and a MIDI version.  Get the WAV file (1.5 megs) as it has the complete version with words and music.  Let me know what you think.

 http://members.aol.com/debheitmann/private/pzlied.htm (http://members.aol.com/debheitmann/private/pzlied.htm)

For a short cut, this is a direct download of the WAV file.
 http://members.aol.com/debheitmann/private/pzlied.wav (http://members.aol.com/debheitmann/private/pzlied.wav)

So, now what do the rest of you play while flying or driving in AH?

Regards,
Badger

Hmm, can't stand to have  music  playing, I need  to hear  the stall horn, wind speed, guns hits on my canopy, etc. to play at what I consider a dismal competitive level.  Does my kids in the background fighting over toys count as  music?

Don't have music on, like Rip I like to make sure I'm aware of whats round me both visually and aurally but I can't help humming the theme tunes to 633 Sqdrn or 617 Sqdrn  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) I'm also one of those people that annoy people with silly mobile phone ringers, have 633 tune at the moment until I can find 617  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Music during game play just gets filtered out as I concentrate on the sim.  A local Seattle station plays hits from the 40's on weekends (880 on the AM) which adds that little extra feel from the bygone era that we all fly in.

I very often have my radio scanner going, however.  I've got almost 100 local (and often used) MilAir frequencies programmed for ATC, Air Refueling, Ops and Airport comms.  Its a lot like the random chatter one would here while actually flying.  Its all about immersion and this adds to the experience.  I've been thinking about more "environmental modeling" by involve yet another sense into the equation - smell.  It wouldn't be too hard to find relic pieces of aircraft hardware to impart the "personality" found in a cockpit: oil, hydraulic fluid, fuel, sweat, worn fabric etc.  Anyone who's been in a well used warbird knows this well!  ...Just have to make sure I have the computer's olfactory simulation set up in its own area to keep the significant others from complaining too much   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Hey Mig, thanks for the heads up on that  880 am, I love big band era Music (Grandfather was a drummer for many smaller bands back then), too bad it's limited to week-ends.

Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures.  Remember, when
someone annoys you it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown, BUT, it
only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and slap the sucker
upside the head!

Heya badger I know the panzerlied by heart  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I'm studying history and one day the professor stepped in the lecture hall and handed out papers with the lyrics to this song. We then all started singing (at least the boys did, girls realy don't go for this kind of nonsense  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif))

What he tried to prove was the fact that through a song you can change someones mentality about an issue. (he was right, there we all were singing very loud and enjoying it a german wartime song).

Never forgot that course  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)

Well I always say that I like a lot of kind of music, maybe because I like the music appropiate for each moment. I find Bryan Adams a good musician, In fact I have gone to several concerts and one of them was the best one in my life.

I like B.A. I like Bon Jovi...
I also like Barricada, Iron Maiden, Extremoduro, DefCon2, Sepultura and more hard groups. But, really I dont see the point in putting that kind of music when I am flying.

I dont care about commercial singers, or radical ones. As long as I like the songs, is okay with me...seems that what your music liking is greatly conditioned by your prejuices. That is sad, from my point of view.

and I suggest you to answer things in a less ironic way. I took is as a kind of joke, but the tone was really offensive, and I could've taken it as an insult, too.

Jean Sibelius: Finlandia  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
(Eng.Lyrics:Katharina von Schlegel)

 Be Still, My soul

Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav'nly Friend
Thro' thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and wind still know
His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hast' ning on
When we shall be forevr with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone.
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when changes and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

All what I have, but I found that with some music I fly better  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

My "AH bands list":

Manowar, Metallica, Nirvana, Offsping, Doors.

Fast compositions are better, with slow lirics I tend to miss too often  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

there's a time for AH and a time for music, and they are not the same.

PS. those who play and replay 'the ride of the Walkyries' should be condemned to listen to the complete opera.

I've got a SB PCI128 and it allows me to have cd music AND Game sound, I have some Altec Lansing ACS41's on the front channel and ran the back channel to my 200watt amp attached to two wall mounted speakers and 2  tower speakers on the floor, when I crank up my FW-190A8 it sounds like I am THERE!
Plus I'm kinda like that kid in Iron Eagle who told Lou Gossett "I need the tunes for my Rhythm"
And some of the LYRICS that I can really
associate Aces High with:

---------------------------------------------

AC-DC
Shoot to Thrill
All you women who want a man of the street
But you don't know which way you wanna turn
Just keep a coming and put your hand out to me
Cause I'm the one who's gonna make you burn
I'm gonna take you down - down, down, down
So don't you fool around
I'm gonna pull it, pull it, pull the trigger

Chorus:
Shoot to thrill, play to kill
Too many women with too many pills
Shoot to thrill, play to kill
I got my gun at the ready, gonna fire at will

Yeah, I'm like evil, I get under your skin
Just like a bomb that's ready to blow
'Cause I'm illegal, I got everything
That all you women might need to know
I'm gonna take you down - yeah, down, down, down,So don't you fool around
I'm gonna pull it, pull it, pull the trigger

Shoot to thrill, play to kill
Too many women with too many pills
Shoot to thrill, play to kill

I got my gun at the ready, gonna fire at will
Cause I shoot to thrill, and I'm ready to kill I can't get enough, can't get my fill

I shoot to thrill, play to kill
Yeah, pull the trigger
Pull it, pull it, pull it, pull the trigger

Chorus:
---------------------------------------------

AC-DC
Back in black
I hit the sack
I've been gone too long
I'm glad to be back
Yes, I'm let loose
From the noose
That's kept me hanging about
I've been looking at the sky
'Cause it's gettin' me high
Forget the hearse 'cause I never die
I got nine lives
Cat's eyes
Abusin' every one of them and running wild

Chorus:
'Cause I'm back                           Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back
Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back, back
(Well) I'm back in black
Yes, I'm back in black

Back in the back
Of a Cadillac
Number one with a bullet, I'm a power pack
Yes, I'm in a gang
With a bang
They've got to catch me if they want me to
hang
Cause I'm back on the track
And I'm beatin' the flak
Nobody's gonna get me on another rap
So look at me now
I'm just makin' my play
Don't try to push your luck, just get out of
my way

Chorus:
---------------------------------------------

AND THIS ONE ALWAYS COMES TO MIND WHEN I DIVE INTO A FURBALL:

Steelers Wheels
Stuck in the Middle With You

Well I don't know why I came here tonight
I got the feeling that something ain't right
I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair
And I'm wondering how I'll get down the
stairs

Chorus:
Clowns to the left of me
Jokers to the right
here I am
Stuck in the middle with you
Yes I'm stuck in the middle with you

And I'm wondering what it is I should do
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face
cuz' I'm showin' off all over the place

Chorus:

Well you started out with nothing and you're
proud that you're a Self made man
And your friends, they all come crawlin, slap
you on the back and say
Please....     Please.....

Trying to make some sense of it all
But I can see that it makes no sense at all
Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor
Cause I don't think that I can take anymore

Chorus:

Well you started out with nothing and you're
proud that you're a Self made man
And your friends, they all come crawlin, slap
you on the back and say
Please....     Please.....

And I don't know why I came here tonight
I got the feeling that something ain't right
I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair
And I'm wondering how I'll get down the
stairs

The current 'airmusic' directory includes:

Golden Earring (Radar Love)
Ennio Morricone (Theme from the Good, the Bad, and The Ugly)
Wagner (Valkyries, of course)
Theme from James Bond
Rolling Stones (Paint it Black)
Eric Burdon and War (Spill the Wine)
The Animals (House of Rising Sun, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, We Gotta Get Out of This Place, It's My Life)
The Who (Won't Get Fooled Again)
Blue Oyster Cult (Don't fear the reaper)
Beatles (I am the Walrus, A Day in the Life)
Carlos Santana (Jingo, Black Magic Woman)
Alman Bros. (Revival)
Jimi Hendrix (All along the watchtower)
Tom Petty (Refugee, Runnin' down a dream)
Sugarloaf (Green Eyed Lady)
Manfred Mann (Blinded By the Light)
and finally...
Mason Williams (yes, Classical Gas)

I need to get some Rush in there, but haven't gotten around to copying it over yet, 2112 would fit nicely.

Actually I found a neat little proggy that is outstanding for those with broadband connects.

Its called WinAmp, and you can grab it at http://yp.shoutcast.com (http://yp.shoutcast.com)

Its a streaming audio program, that allows you to "tune in" just about any kind of "virtual" radio station you want.

Havent' tried it during AH yet, but will tonight.

My personal preference are the "HardRock/Alternative" stations, with bands such as Tool, Bush, Creed, and such.

32 years old and still listening to music that teenagers would recognize  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I've used Winamp for a long time Verm, not as much for streaming audio as for playing MP3s.  It's very resource light, and has no problem playing while AH is running (unlike the more widely known bulky system-hog, Realplayer/realjukebox)

Um.  This may sound weird, but I love to play some Glenn Miller Band while flying around.  It really puts me in that 1940's mindset.  Plus it's not that bad.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

When flying for Luftwaffe (that's 100% of time) I listen Rammstein. It is quite aggressive music and sometimes its suits the situation.

Here is little sample, translated to english.

Der Meister - The master

Run!

Because the master has sent us
We announce the downfall
of the riders of evil
Feed his ulcer of envy

The truth is like a thunderstorm
It comes to youyou can hear it
To proclaim it is so bitter
It comes to you in order to destroy

Because the night lay dying
We announce Doomsday
There will be no mercy
RunRun for your lives

The truth is a chorus of wind
No angel comes to avenge you
These days are your last
It will break you like little sticks
It comes to you as perdition

The truth is a chorus of wind
No angel comes to avenge you
These days are your last
It will break you like little sticks

Wow....

I never expected such a response to a simple question about music tastes.  Something that struck me in reading the answers in this thread, was the diversity of our Aces High community.  Judging by the music tastes and names of some of the groups, we have everything from youngsters in their teens, through to retired (getting there) grandfathers like myself.  It's something you really don't think about that much when you're on-line flying with your squad or engaging bad guys.  It makes you wonder how much we would all have in common if this pastime was "face to face", as opposed to a virtual world of "handles".  We have a very strong, growing rapidly and culturally diverse community, which personally, I think is an awesome thing.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

As with any on-line environment today, where it's possible for people to hide behind masks of anonymity, we do have the odd occurrence of "out of control" characters, either via inappropriate behavior on-line or self serving ego driven flame fests on the BBS.  Comparing this community so far to others I've participated in, I find the self policing aspect in dealing with these characters very commendable.  You all should be proud of what you have helped build as a community and I hope those attitudes with maturity (but fun) continue to make AH on-line and this BBS such an enjoyable place to be.

Anyway, enough of the emotional stuff.  It doesn't mean we're going steady.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

The real point of my e-mail was to thank many of you publicly, who sent me private e-mail saying you had downloaded Panzerlied and fired it up on-line while you were grinding along in your Panzer IV's.  I agree with your comments, as it really is a rousing melody with strong words.  You can almost visualize those warriors of the past, driving into battle singing the virtues of their camaraderie over the drones of the engines and tracks creaking.  By the way, to avoid any of the "let's start a flame fest" politically correct types, it isn't about the political agenda and cause they believed in, it's simply about the fact that they were warriors fighting for their country with the same "duty, honor, courage" convictions that allied soldiers possessed.  I don't believe anyone here for a moment is advocating or supporting their cause, as that part of it was definitely pure evil.

As an old "tanker", personally I'm very pleased and excited as to how many of the "pilot types" have tried out the ground vehicle portion of AH and found it to be a lot of fun.  I know some of you say it can be boring as it still takes a LOT of time (HT/Pyro take notes) to get to a fight, but with a balance of enemy vehicles and limited vulching by planes, it can be as exciting as a good dogfight.  Now if I could just figure out how HT nailed me at over 4.0k while I was moving laterally at over 22 mph, I'd be a happy camper.  That was one heck of an outstanding shot, right through the top of the CC's turret cupola, a first round kill.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Some of you asked what the English translation to Panzerlied was, so here it is as close as one can get translating from German to English.

For those of you that missed the link, here it is again:

 http://members.aol.com/debheitmann/private/pzlied.wav (http://members.aol.com/debheitmann/private/pzlied.wav)

Panzerlied
========

In blizzard or storm,
Or in sun warm and bright,
The day hot as hell
Or bone-chilling be the night,
Our faces may with dust be laid,
But spirits never fade,
No, never fade;
Relentless, our tank
Thunders out on a raid.

With engines a-howling,
Fast as is the wind,
We head for the foe,
Safe, as we're in armor skinned.
Our comrades still behind us roam;
We fight the foe alone,
Yes, fight alone.
We stab through the line
To break the foes backbone.

Whenever the foe
May appear in our sight,
We'll ram throttle full,
Then we'll humble all his might!
Of what use is our life if we
Our country serve freely?
Yes, serve freely!
To die for our country,
Our honour shall be.

With tank traps and mines,
Our foe tries to impede.
We laugh at his ruses;
We know he'll not succeed.
And when, in threat, his cannons stand,
Half hidden in the sand,
Yes, in the sand,
We can find our way
Over much safer land.

And should at long last,
Fickle Lady Luck leave,
And we remain here,
Leaving family to grieve,
A bullet with our name on it,
Find us and seal our fate,
Yes, seal our fate,
Our tank will our grave be
On that final date.

After the wife, kids, pets, neighbors, door-to-door salesman, etc. are duct taped. I break out the jack and throw on some Marilyn Manson.

I find it relaxing after a stressful day.

Ok my list

Bach, Brandenburg Concerto no. 2
Stravinsky, La sacre du printemps
The byrds, chesnut mare
The who, substitute
The doors, riders on the storm
Aretha Franklin, Respect
Jefferson Airplane, White rabbit
Louis Armstrong, What a wonderful world
Mettalica, Metallica album
Iron Maiden, Aces High
Iggy Pop, Lust for life
Lou Reed, Perfect day
Limp Bizkit, Re-arranged
2pac, Dear mama

And yeah before you ask, I stole alot of my fathers records  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif) Just love them...

Badger, you are right bout the community and the panzerlied. When you are flying and talking you realy don't think about how old the person you are flying with/speaking to is or what he looks like  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Can give mighty surprises when you meet them in real life (ask saw). So sorry I live in Europe, because I would realy love to be at the first CON (whenever that is). Maybe I'll even safe to come along  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)

About the panzerlied, yes it realy is a very strong song... you want to sing along, it gives heart... that's what I was talking about,  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Usually not listening to music while flying (else I tend to get shot down too easily on buff runs (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) ), but I prefer a variety of independent music, too much to range I think. Current favourites Nick Cave, Tindersticks, NoMeansNo if it shall be aggressive, all time favourites are the famous US underground band, The Residents.
