The I-16 was a very common fighter well into 1943 and saw service up till the end of the war. This plane although slow by comparison with the late war fighters was a very manauverable airplane, kinda like a Russian Zero, except the later models carried 4 20mm cannons 2 250KG bombs or 6 RS 82 rockets, quiet a punch realy. I think this plane could be used effectavely in the MA espichaly for base defense do to it's abaility to manuaver and delever a decent anti GV punch, It also would add greately to any CT set up with Soviet aircraft.

I've wanted one of these since I visited the Fighter Pilots' Museum in NZ a few years ago and saw them building a whole bunch of them. They are really different looking fighters, almost comical looking. I'd love to fly one. :)

Ya I realy think they would be fun to fly myself.
-
we will have to let brady hand crank the gear tho :)
-
Yeah he should have to tap the landing-gear-key 44 times to raise the wheels :)

Lep, I saw them flying at the Wanaka 1998 air show, very cool.
-
Oh, Wanaka is in New Zealand ..... :D
-
How about a Yak-9 with 20 mm, the backbone of the Soviet fighter force?
-
We need Soviet fighters that actually suck :D
What we have now is all monsters..
Yak-9U: darn fast, good maneuverability...
Yak-9T: reasonably fast, killer guns...
La-5FN: amazingly capable plane
La-7: amazing upgrade from the amazingly capable plane
.....
We need some 1941, 1942 stuff! It's shame to see none of our AH VVS planes have the typical "Soviet green" colors on themselves!!
LaGG-3 and Yak-1B(in Lilya Litvjak colors!!! ooooh!!!)
... these two come into mind.
-
Prety shure the later models had a political prisioner in the rear to raies the geer....
-
:D

Definately saw more and later use than the mig 3 (due there being so many and the production line was well oiled) and was in greater use than the lagg3, and yak1/7
The late war model yak thats missing is the 3 but the 9U is so 3 like I would give it a miss for a twin shvak cannon I-16......... (same fire power as the la5FN)
and I agree like the Yak 9 it would make a pretty good low level field defender.......
Tilt
Yak 9d would be an easy addition............ its a T with bigger and heavier fuel tank, the same guns as the U and a pair of light bomb hitches. Its only advantage over the other yaks would be range.

How about I-153 bi-plane; predecessor of I-16?
It was widely used -42 and in summer 1943 it was transferred to ground-attack duties. Could carry eight rockets AFAIR.
-
I thought of that, but the I 16 has some very nice options two 500 pound bombs or 6 rockets and up to four 20mm canons on the later model a real nice punch.
-
Yeah!!!! I really want the I16. I can't wait for my copy of Il2_Sturmovik to ship so I can fly it!
-
Staga- I-153 was not pre- but rather POST I-16. Thats right- it was developed after the I-16's performance in the Spanish Civil war.
And it wouldn't be THAT interesting in AH, and widely hated to boot. The only thing it could do well in our MA would be HO anything that came after it.
Not so sure about it being more used than the LaGG-3 though, the LaGG-3 (and subvarients) and the Yak-1 replaced it in almost every front line unit by the winter of '43. Even by summer only a very few IAP's had not gone to the LaGG or Yak factories to fly home thier new rides.
-
Oh boy and just think how pissed the Spit V dweebs ... err pilots ;) would be !!
-
It would be interesting to see Bi planes added, and have them used to boot, imagine CR 42's Gloster Gladators....:)
I wonder how the open cockpit would work in the I 16 (and others) would their be a special sound file for the extra loud aspect it would provide?
-
I'd like to see the i-16 modelled for sure +)
I want the open cockpit, and if it has 2 or more cannon..BRING IT ON!
pssst SUPERFLY hinted we should be seeing some screenshots soon of some works in progress!

WW2 biplanes:
GLADIATOR
I-153
FAIREY SWORDFISH
AVIA B534(Czech!)
PZL P-11(polish) (mono but looks like biplane :))
HENSCHEL He 123A
HENSCHEL Hs 126B-1 of 3.(H)/21(recon)
ARADO Ar 67 or 68 or 197
FIAT CR 32 or 42 Falco
Meridionali Ro.37bis
Mitsubishi F1M2
all used mostly for recon but all would be really unusual and probably a lot of fun :)
BRING EM ON :)

Does anybody have a decent link or a pic of an I 16 during the war?
I am looking for somthing to blow up and get on a billboard near HTC's office in Texas.(nead a Grace pic to btw):)
-
323 MPH at sea level? That's not too bad at all. And, under 5 minutes to 16,000 means it climbs decently, at least at low levels. Seems like it'd probably see a fair bit of MA usage, at least as much as the Zeke does.

Ah I missed a biplane thread! ;) :D
Yes bring on the I-16 and of course the I-153!
Gloster Gladiator,
Cr.42,
I-153,
& Hs-123
would all be very usefull fighters/divebombers(Hs-123).
Imagine dogfighting in a val, 2x the armament, manuverability & all of them are faster than the val other then the Hs-123 which is only 15-20 mph slower but could carry 20mm cannons! & around the same bomb load.
I've damadged & shot many ppl down with vals & SBD's so I'm not worryin about them not being used in the MA, and I'm not that good a pilot just look at my scores :D lol.
They will definitly be usefull in scenarios as well, especially now that we are getting early war slow planes like the SBD&val we already have, & a stuka wich i sense not too far away :) .
And they definitly served a great role as far as history goes,
Gladiators were very widly used, even the first to enage enemy bombers in the BOB, & was extreemly manuverable, just imagine flying a val, with much better roll & turn rate, 2x the armament, 10-15 mph faster. only disadvatage would be it couldnt carry bombs, or many anyway.
More Cr.42's were made than almost if not any other italian fighter!
I-153 would definitly be usefull, top speed of 275 mph, rockets, bombs, retractable gear, and 4x7.7mm MG's, & was even produced at a higher rate than the I-16 during ww2, infact in mongolia the I-16 was replaced by the much more manuverable I-153. I've allso read, that even though it was a biplane it had surprisingly good acceleration rate, and both the I-16 & I-153 didnt have drag flaps!
Hey brady, don't you guys at the CT staff get to suggest planes to HTC? :D
-
No, unfortunatly we do not, only beg like the mortals we are:)
-
If we can add that crap we can add this to :
-
Hey brady, post this one on a bill board near Htc's office :D
-
Cajun, you left Avia B.534 off your list of WWII biplane fighters
-
OMG, what a thought we all get to gether and save up and get a HUGE Billboard sign that Pyro pases on the way o work each day and Put up a Pick of the Plane we want added with a caption"Pyro, We Want this".
-
NoNo, "President Pyro" :D
I have some good & bad news for biplane guys:
Bad news:
A friend of mine asked HT if they would add biplanes & he said he doesnt like biplanes :(
Good news:
1: A lot of the CT staff want biplanes as well, daddog said he would suggest them :)
2: Pyro is the one who choses the planes not HT :D ;)
I will be gone for 2weeks, so to brady & Dr.Z, & my squaddies I award you with the temporary rank of #1 in command of the biplane beggers! untill I get back of course ;) :D
PS. whgates don't know much about that plane, could you post some info about it?

Definatly need some early war VVS stuff. What I want more (less needed) is a Yak 3 though! :D
-
Wil compare the yak 3 to the yak 9u, the yak3 wouldnt add much.......

my response
add the MiG-1, 3, and the polikarpov I-16 on the suck list
-
Awwww....it's sooo cuuuute
-
hmm, ,my sources tell me the Polarkov is an WW1 fighter...
am I mistaken?
-
ja, the I-16 made it's debut in 1933 - it would probably be the best turner in AH if it were in the game
-
The I 16 is a WW2 fighter,a very commom early was Rusian fighter, with good handeling good guns and bombs and rockets, an extreamly usefull plane.
-
which version carried the 4 x 20mm? i only know of the type 17 w/ 2 x 20mm...
-
(Admits didnt read all of thread)
Sad thing is people are gonna want it to be perked
And gonna have to model hand cranked gears
-
The hand granked landing gear is a misnomer, it is realy a gravity assist syatem. after you take off the plane is roled over and a leaver actuated which allows the gear to fall into their resting places. to lower the leaver is mearly moved to pretakeoff position.
-
Wow, this thread came back to life!:)
-
After doing some digging and going through, the refrence boooks I have on hand, I t apears that the only I 16 with 4 20mm cannons was the TsKB-12P a varient of the I 16 Type 10 and that it was basicaly a test bed.
Howeaver My other book, which is in storage Illuded to a type that was in service with a gunj package consisting of four 20mm cannons, regreatably I can not produce a more difinative explanation, But at present based on the material I have at hand I would say that the best armed/preformance model would most likely be the Type 27:
Two 20mm ShVAK cannons 150 rounds each.
TwoShKAS 7.62mm MG's 650 rounds each
-
get a Wildcat and pretend it's an I16. That should be good enuff.
-
Cold Very Cold.......:)
Hear Look at this and make a wish:
-
I wish we had a I-153, Gloster Gladiator and Cr.42!:D
-
:o I didnt realize i replied to such an old thread
-
Just cause it's old dont mean it's broke:)
-

Thanks, Brady. This is the thread I was looking for :)
Cheers,

Here´s lend lease stopgap before we get more Russian planes... ;)
-
S!
We really need I-16 Polikarpov!
My Brewster B-239 needs at least one opponent plane which require B&Z tactics :D
