I just wanted to let the community get a peek at what the guys in Jokers Low have been working on the past several weeks.
Its still in a draft stage, but our biggest lack at this point is the terrain editor. Hint hint HTC (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Afrika Corp is a full scale 5 frame coordinated event to be held over 5 nights, in a two week period, and we hope to schedule it such that both American and European players may particpate.
It is situated in North African/Med theater in the spring of 1943, and we hope to hold it on a custom historical terrain.
The event will feature historical aircraft, historical squadrons, and rules to insure that the stragtegy and tactics will be historical as well.
As in the real battle, each side will have to
- support the ground units with close air support sorties
- attack enemy assests such as airfields, supply depots, and headquarters with air to ground sorties
- disrupt enemy aircraft operations
- Each side will have a special objective to reflect historical focus
- Tanks and halftracks will be the heart of the event.
Now realize that some things will change between now and the time the event is held, so check the website periodicly and watch here for announcements.
You may reach the Afrika Corp website directly here: http://web.mountain.net/~arringto/afrika/ (http://web.mountain.net/~arringto/afrika)
Or thru the link on the Jokers Low website: http://www.hpcisp.com/~kieren/jokers.htm (http://www.hpcisp.com/~kieren/jokers.htm)
If you have any questions or comments feel free to post them here, or contact me directly.

*I wish I could help Jokers Low more (actually help period). As it is my online flight time is random and unschedulable. Time available to help coordinate these activites is almost non existant for me (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Yes, and about the Jokers' page...
I have removed the text links because the menu bar at the top is cross-platform compatible and stable. This frees up the margin on the left for more useful info down the road. However, if anyone cannot see the menu bar, please contact me!

Curious here:
Fighter aircraft are limited to a maximum of 15,000 ft altitude
I am not sure what this is supposed to reflect, but it basically handicaps the axis to suicide. IRL the axis fighters would NEVER engage at a disadvantage or co-alt with a spitfire IX. Here they would be forced to co-alt because they cannot use typical realt and attack tactics. Some of the best german pilots flew in N. africa, they were by far too smart to not use the climb ability of their outgunned F4's and G2's to gain the advantage in any conflict.
Fighter-Bomber or Jabo aircraft are limited to a maximum of 12,000 ft altitude, while carrying any air to ground ordinance (bombs or rockets).
Gaurenteeing that planes carrying ordinance will be at a disadvantage in a conflict? What does this accomplish verm? If they want to use it effectivly they have to fly low anyhow, but in such a seriously performance reducer odds were high they would climb as high as possible enroute to targets to ensure the ability to dive away from enemy planes if spotted.
Spitfire Mk IX aircraft will be armed with the x2 20mm + x4 .303's MG armament option, and may not carry the 250lb bomb option.
Fw190F6 aircraft will be armed with the x2 20mm + x2 13mm MG option.
Fw190A4 aircraft will be armed with the x4 20mm + x2 13mm MG option.
Do you mean the 109 F4? or 190 A6? Because neither the F4 or G2 have 13mm MG. Just a little confused on this part. Also none of the 109's listed have gondolas I think (have to dbl check G2).
Alltogether I love it though! Great work putting all this together so far verm, I will defenitly be there and can't wait to start!

Looking forward to this!
One quick Q: time of events. Will it run on euro friendly hours?I admit that if the answer is yes it will limit the possibilities, ie weekends foremost.

Oh Oh,
Count me in. I'll fly a P-40B. Oh wait we don't have one. NATE!!! Whip up a P-40 for us real quick. How can we have an Africa Campaign without the P-40?
Sarrows, this is North Africa not Germany. The LW purpose here was to provide air cover for the armored units, this was done at fairly low level (The tanks and such being on the ground and all)
Combat didn't start reaching into the Strausphere until the Allied daylight bombing campaign in Europe.

Danish, I hope to plan the event such that 3 of the 5 days will occur on either a Saturday or Sunday early Afternoon on the east coast of the US. Which should allow the European players to play in their late evening. Nothing is certain yet, but we will try our best to accomadate everyone.
Sharky, (from your email) signups have not yet been announced. Right now we still need to build a the custom terrain, but hopefully with the terrain editor beta starting soon, we can get started on that. Once we get to a reasonable point, signups will be announced and planning can procede from there.
Sorrow, unfortunately altitude limits are a necessary evil in a scenario such as this. The focus of the North African Campaign, was much like the Russian front, close air support, and most of the fighting was done at much lower altitudes than we are use too. Without the limits, both sides escalate the "alt monkey" syndrome, and very quickly you have 30k 109's fighting 30k Spitfires (seen it before many times in the scenario's I have helped to run). This is quite unhistoric, ruins everything, and hence the limits of 15k for fighters.
Yes the Axis will have a hard time with Co-E Spitfires, but that is also why the Axis has more fighters overall, and more of the late model fighters (109G's&190's vs Spit IX's).
The Fw190F6 statement is just that, a 190F6. The Fw190F6 (at least according to one source I used), was an early model F variant derived from, A3's and A4's, with increased pilot protection, the x2 20mm + x2 MG option armament as a standard, and the ability to carry more bombs. Its performance was ironically almost identical to a Fw190A8, which we will be using to substitute for it.
The 190A4 statement was intentional so that it can be handled in one of two ways. Many rumors have been swirling around about the A4 or A5 being on the block as the next variant in the game, if so, it will be incorporated into the event in its historic role. If not, again we will substitute the A8, which is admittedly a slight disadvantage for the Axis. If we must use the A8 though, I didn't want anyone using the late war, anti-bomber 30mm cannon armaments. And thats why it was stated that way.
Sorry for the confusion guys (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Any more questions?

Verm, you need to have a spotter on station when the fighters engage, last scenario that JG2 was in, there was a ceiling limit, by the time the icons were visible, 50% of the allies had broke the ceiling limit and were 3 to 4 K above us.
FYI, Luftwaffe is 2-0 in Historical engagements, maybe you should give those spits an alt advantage so they have a chance of beating us (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

A spotter would be nice. But with a guncam in the sim folks now have a means for collecting evidence to report transgressions, such as breaking an alt limit, to the scenario staff. Then, if the CM finds it warrant, he/she could levy an appropriate penalty on the guilty side - such as loss of X amount of Y type aircraft for a frame or two. Since penalties could effect the whole side you now end up having peer pressure enforcing the rules.

JG2: I think the Buccaneers might just have to take up the gauntlet you've thrown down, and fly for the Allies. Especially since we've not had the pleasure of going head to head with you guys for some weeks now (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif). Check-six, Jerry (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif).
By the way, Verm; is this taking place late enough in the war that the Italian planes were not a factor? It would add some great diversity to the plane set to use the C-202/205, and the mafia crew would love it.

Rojo, the Italian planes are definitely a factor in this event.
There are two units of C.202's (8 planes each) flying for the Axis side.
It would have been nice to inlcude a squadron of C.205's as well, but I can't find any evidence that they were past the prototype/Early acceptance testing at this point of the war, and were not quite yet at the front.

Hi Vermillion,
i can inform you that the c205V (serie I) was based in Sicily at Catania in spring 1943 (11 may 1943).
On 20 april 25 c205V of 1' Stormo and 9 c202 at 13:45 take off from Pantelleria to reach Capo Bon and Capo Mustafa', at 35km west from Pantelleria they found 60 Spitfire of the 92,417 and 601 Squadron of The South African Air Force.
3 c205 was downed, no data about the c202, the italian pilots declared 14 Spitfire downed.
c205V (serie I) : 12.7mm x 2 + 7.7mm x 2
-
Yes Visconti I think you had sent me that report when we were talking about this before. Thanks (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Unfortunately, that report is 11 May 1943, and the Axis forces around Tunis surrendered on 12 May 1943.
Overall, the scenario is suppose to represent from January - May, 1943 and I had to make a judgement call on whether or not the C.205 was representative, and significant throughout the battle.
In the end, I had to decide against it. Sorry.
