You're right that the ships from Star Wars match up well with WW2-era aircraft. This is intentional on Lucas' part, and in fact many of the dogfighting scenes during the Death Star battle were taken from actual gun camera footage and "transformed" into space battles.
I was always under the impression that X-Wings represented P-51s, and TIE Fighters represented Zeros.

Y-Wing = Lanc
Can carry a butt load of Ion bombs, has the best shileds for any fighter (rated at 50 SPPS) but it's slow and unmanverable.
If you wanted anymore Star Wars info let me know, I have 8 Star Wars Techie books. I know everything from armor Ratios on AT-ATs to how many Jawas it takes to screw in a light bulb (none). hehe
BTW you forgot the E-Wing, T-wing, V-wing, X-95 Headhunter, and the K-wing. I'm disappointed in you.

Hey I'm part of a Star Wars Role Playing group. We usualy try to meet every 2 weeks to do a game. We just finished a mission where we captured an Imperial Starport, using nothing but a Barloz Freighter and a Yaktune-Tunarine 3B Heavy Battle Tank. COD you have no idea how much fun it was for me to drive that tank. I vulched 53 Tie fighters trying to take off, blew up 6 Duck freighters, and I also got to blow up a Comms center. Oh man it was SO freaking funny when I drove down the landing pad running down stormtroopers. made me feel like a kid again.
Bring the Yaktune-Tunarine 3B Heavy Battle Tank to Aces High!
-
whoa beef!! slow down :D where is this role playing you speak of? Is it that new everquest-style star wars game?
-
Hmm well its obvious that Lucas modelled the Empire after the Axis of ww2. Stormtoopers...

he's talking about good ol' pencil, paper and dice roleplaying. ;) sounds like he's got a much better group that I was in. we had one session and the GM wasn't prepared for it as well as he should have been.
The new online Star Wars game prolly won't be Everquest style. Lead designer was on the Ultima Online team. Gonna be skill based instead of level based. yeah yeah, I'm a RPG geek. :p

where's the wookie?
-
i mourn for the species...
...and mason, have another wookie cookie.

-
No Mason I do not refer to the New SWOLRPG that is coming out (though I think it's going to rock) I am refering to the good old dice, book, paper, and pencil RPG.
Hangtime it is not wise to upset a wookie. Though they may not look like it, Wookies are actually highly intelligent. They just lack the proper vocal cords to speak "Basic". (english form a lang that most people can talk and understand) I will also remind you Hangtime that a Wookie can rip your arms off, shove them down your throat, and make you crap them out later. :)

And I get yelled at when, on VOX, I shout "R2, try to increase the power....hang onnnn back there" in the midst of a dogfight ;)
Bring Imperial Walkers/AT ATs to Aces High ;) Maybe THEY can climb over these hills!

Do you guys know what TOTAL FREAKIN NERDS you sound like?
The scary thing is that you are making comparisons of Star Wars games to AH. If your comparisons are even remotely accurate, then I fear that anyone who has ever heard ME talk about AH in the same manner must also instantly realize that I too am a TOTAL FREAKIN NERD. Not that I didn't already know how quickly people can surmise what an obvious dork I am... But I didn't realize how freakin stupid it could possibly sound!
I just am thankful that I got married before I became a COMPUTER GAME DORK!
-Whew!-
Man I feel sorry for you single guys, you don't stand a chance now.

I think I'm in the wrong thread. Anyone know where I can find a good drinking or sports thread? My secretary is into these medieval recreating weekends where everyone dresses up like retarded knights, beat on each other with wooden swords and eat crappy food. I thought she was pretty weird, but this puts it into perspective.
-
Hey, Raubvogel. There used to be a society at my uni that used to do that sort of thing. We used to row past them on the river on a Sunday morning as they practised sword fighting.
The first time I saw them I nearly capsized the boat laughing. It kind of put our silly sport into perspective. ;)
They were called 'Treasure Trappers' apparently. And they scared me.

Well OTOH they hold a Midevil festival near my home each year, and all I gotta say is.......cleavage city!

ROFLES. And where is this strange land of Nerdan located?
Thanks for being a good sport Viper. Personally, I think the A-Wing is more like a Spitfire. Small and maneuverable, with limited speed and firepower.
-
Well the A-Wing is small, manuverable, FAST, and fragle. Spit is Small, manuverable, fairly slow, and normal fragility.,

I have been reading about the RPG's you guys are playing and wanted to share one with you. If you are looking for immersion this one is the way to go. You just slip right into it and can totally lose yourself if you’re not careful. Time just seems to fly by. What it involves is assuming lots of different and often unpleasant responsibilities. You get to meet and interact with lots of interesting characters. Some of them seem really cool but turn out to be really dangerous or stupid (sometimes concurrently). Others appear worthless at the outset but after awhile you learn they can really help you in your quest and you even come to enjoy their company if you give them a chance. You often will find yourself in situations where you step back and say, "Whoa! How'd I end up here?" Other times, really cool crap will happen but you'll be too immersed in nit picky toejam to enjoy it. And the costumes! You get to wear all kinds of stuff. Some of it makes you feel powerful and charming, other stuff makes you feel old, dumpy and sad. What's wild is other characters may see it totally the opposite way that you perceive it. Oh yeah, that perception thing doesn't just apply to the costumes. It applies to everything! Nothing is absolute. Fact and fiction swirl around each other. Truth and beauty get muddled up with deceit, cruelty and shame. It's totally wild. You can't beat the cost either. You can play it at any time because all of the costs are driven right into the game. Cost is really subjective too. Really cool stuff that costs a fortune can turn out quickly to be meaningless burdensome crap. While little stuff, maybe even something given to you by a child, can turn out to be your most priceless treasure (be careful because that one is easily overlooked in your rush to grab the flashy gaudy crap).
Yep, I've been playing this one for a lot longer than I feel like I have. One day it'll end and the scary thing is you won't know when that'll happen. Some folks believe there's another RPG you get invited to after this one but nobody can really verify that. So, I guess I'll play this one like tomorrow could be my last turn. I have to remember to keep looking beyond the obvious to see the really important stuff. I hear that's the only way to win.
:D

Ok to help, here are the stats on SW Fighters:
X-Wing- This is an all around fighter. Good shields, good armament, and Avg speed.
Armed with: 4 x Med. Blaster Cannons
2 x Proton Torpedo Tubes w/t 3 Torpedos per tube
Z-95- This is the X-Wings older Brother, it looks almost like the X-wing except if does not have the split wing function. The stats are almost the same except it also lacks 2 Blaster Cannons.
Armed with: 2 x Med. Blaster Cannons
2 x Proton Torpedo Tubes w/t 3 Torpedos per tube
Y-Wing- This is the Rebel Bomber. VERY SLOW, but tough as a damn Battleship.
Armed with: 2x Hvy. Blaster Cannons (fixed to forward)
2x Ion Cannons (turret)
4x Proton Torpedo Tubes w/t 5 Torpedos per tube
1x Ion Bomb Bay (charge rate of 1 bomb per 10 secs, unlimited supply)
(side note: these are the stats for my "Private" Y-wing hehe)
A-Wing- This is the Rebel intercepter. Fast....VERY fast, but VERY weak. Light shields, 1 -2 good shots and boom!
Armed with: 2 x Med. Blaster Cannons
2 x Proton Torpedo Tubes w/t 3 Torpedos per tube
B-Wing- This is one of the best fighters ever made. Good shields, good speed, and good armament. Plus it has a cocpit that rotates to keep the pilot always on traget. Very Sweet fighter.
Armed with: 3 x Med. Blaster Cannons
1 x Ion Cannon
2 x Proton Torpedo Tubes w/t 6 Torpedos per tube
When I find my book I'll post the COMPLETE stats on all the fighters. hehe
Yes I know, I'm never going to get laid my whole life ;)

Q - What is the name of the spacecraft manufacturing company that built the TIE fighters?
Sienar Fleet Systems.
Does that qualify me as a nerd? :)

ok you SWG fans... how many of you post on their forums? ;) I check in from time to time and I've never seen any names I recognize.
edit: oh yeah, anyone can go look up the manufacturers of the ships on http://www.starwars.com ;) Incom T-65 X-Wing for example.
ooo, the Z-95 Headhunter actually used British style variant namings at first. "These initial models (the Mark I, or Z-95mk1) were very maneuverable in an atmosphere." :D

Here's a few:
q - What is Boba Fett's real name?
q - What was the name of the company that constucted Slave-1
q - What is the name of the underground crimial group based out of Coursant (aka: a mafia)?
Also:
I had an idea on a game for Starwars that was based a lot like WW2 online, 'cept requireing about 1/2 the resources (although by my estimates it would probably fill at 10 GB HDD, unless I can get the level maps to compress more). Anyone have any ideas on who I can contact about this? I have a full written proposal and everything, I just need to know where to start.
-
1-Nobody knows. But Episode 2 might change that.
2-I think the slave1 is a Firespray class patrole ship.
3-Black Sun run by Prince Xior(sp)

1 - Good, I think Ep 2 will
2 - yup ( I think, will have girlfriend check though), hell, you get bonus booze for getting the type of craft correct, though, he modded the damn thing like Han Solo modified the Mel Falcon. I was looking for the name of the Shipyard that built it, FYI: it was Kuat Drive Yards (KDY also built the Super Star Destroyers, the and the Star Destroyer class capital ships).
3 - yup

Just unlocked Slave1 in rougesquadren 2. IT SUCKS. A tie shot we 3 TIMES and up i went. But the 20 cluster homeing missles make up for the horible shielding. But back to REAL StarWars
Here is a little tivia of my own.
1-When did the A-Wing enter servise with the Rebel Aliance.
2-Name Darth Vaders 2 ships.
3-Who is Boba Fetts dad "???"
4-Name the BoutyHunter Robot that Boba killed on Cloud City. (need to watch close during the trashmelter scene. the white hulk in the corner.)
5-Did Boba Die during ROTJ.
I am such a geek
Information from starwars.com
Slave1 stats
Height:
21.5 meters long
Manufacturer:
Kuat Systems Engineering (built BEFORE StarDestroyers)
Type:
pursuit vessel
Weapon:
Laser cannons, concealed projectile launchers, ion cannons, tractor beam
Affiliation:
Bounty Hunter
For all its deadliness and stealth, the Slave I is an antiquated craft of a type rarely seen plying the modern spacelanes. Both Jango and Boba Fett staved off its obsolescence by constantly rebuilding, customizing and updating the ship's many features.
What began life as a Kuat Systems Engineering limited edition Firespray-class ship is now a dedicated pursuit craft worthy of the galaxy's best bounty hunter. Aside from its clearly visible twin blaster cannons, the ship also has numerous weapons hidden away. Concealed in its hull are a turret-mounted tractor beam projector, a pair of proton torpedo launchers, concussion missile tubes, and a powerful ion cannon.
After Fett's apparent death in the Sarlacc pit, the Alliance seized the Slave I and impounded it on the planet Grakouine. As the galaxy was busy turning itself inside out, transforming from Empire to New Republic, the Slave I was promptly forgotten. Using a variety of fronts, a clandestine Fett legally reclaimed the Slave I by purchasing it. As he was refitting the vessel, he used a sleek replacement ship that he dubbed the Slave II

the A-wing is a spit. the tie fighter is a zero.

1. I have no fediddleing idea - some time between the Battle at Yavin 4 and the Battle of Hoth.
2. 1'st was a TIE Advanced prototype. Second - Im not sure what you are refering to - perhaps his Llamba-class shuttle? Or maybe you mean capital ships? ISD Avenger in ANH - SSD Executor in ESB and ROTJ.
3. Jengo Fett
4. Ji88 or something.
5. Of course not - how would they write the comic books? :P
Heres some more for ya:
1. What was the largest capital ship, at over 14km long, produced by the Empire (except for the Death Star's)?
2. What was the name and occupation of Princess Leia's foster father?
3. Who designed the original Death Star?
4. What is the technical designation (aircraft type) of the Millenium Falcon? (easy one)
5. Who was the blue skinned human who united the Empire after the fall of Emperor Palpatine and the rise of the New Republic?
6. What was the name of his flagship?
7. What is the essential "item" nessessary for the production of a lightsaber? (projects the "blade")
8. What does TIE stand for? (nuther easy one)
9. What are the "wings" of the X-Wing fighter technically refered to as?
10. What was the name of the Imperial General, commanding, Battle of Hoth?
11. What was the name of the Alliance General, commanding, Battle of Hoth?
Enjoy. =)

Didn't you guys read the other thread? Lucas has explained many times that the Death Star battle, particularly the radio dialogue, is based on RAF Battle of Britain footage. Where do you think they got all that "Red 5 Standing By" stuff. That's all RAF radio jargon. So X-Wings are Spits and TIE fighters are Messers. Rebels are Allies and Empire are Nazis. It's pretty simple.

Well I think its time to get the facts strate on the X-Wing from the source. STARWARS.COM
The X-wing starfighter became the premiere Alliance weapon when the Empire nationalized the Incom Corporation. Technicians and suppliers in the employ of Incom were secretly sympathetic to the Alliance, and during a daring Rebel raid, they defected to the Rebellion, bringing the X-wing fighter prototypes with them. Like its predecessor, the Incom/Subpro Z-95, the X-wing fighter has a reputation for being able to absorb damage, but is also quite fast and maneuverable. In response to the X-wing fighter threat, the Empire designed the new TIE interceptor to be its space superiority fighter. The X-wing would become the mainstay fighter for the Alliance for much of the Galactic Civil War.
The X-wing fighter has a compact life support system of compressors, temperature regulators, and oxygen scrubbing filters. A series of acceleration compensators help isolate the pilot from deadly g-forces generated by high speed maneuvers. There is enough oxygen, fuel and power in an X-wing for a week of non-combat operations. Additional consumable tanks can be affixed to the S-foils at a cost of performance.
Behind the cockpit, accessible from both behind the pilot's chair and a belly hatch, is the cargo compartment. It has a capacity of two cubic meters, and is rated for 110 kilograms. Pilots generally store survival and repair gear in this compartment. The newer T-65AC4 can carry 150 kilograms of cargo.
In emergencies, the X-wing's Guidenhauser ejection seat can throw the pilot clear of the fighter. Separator charges blast the cockpit canopy free, and also launch the astromech unit from the socket.
A fully integrated Torplex Rq8.Y flight computer translates flight data from control surfaces to engine performance. Like most starfighters, X-wings don't come equipped with slave circuits. Power for the X-wing is generated by a centrifugal vapor fusion and ionization reactor housed behind the astromech socket. The generator's initial spins are powered by Novaldex O4-Z cryogenic cells housed in the ship's aft engineering section. These power cells are recharged through a super-conducting port. Once powered, the four Incom 4L4 fusial thrust engines propel the starfighter. Some models were equipped with Incom 4j.4 engines rated at 300 KTU. The newer T-65AC4 can attain an impressive sublight speed comparable to the Alliance A-wing. Maneuverability is afforded by a system of etheric rudders that change thrust vectors.
In an atmosphere, the X-wing's Incom RDA repulsorlift drive adaptor provides an airspeed of 1,050 kilometers per hour. The fighter handles nearly identical to a T-16 skyhopper in an atmosphere. The New Republic-era fighter can attain speeds of at least 1,300 kilometers per hour.
For hyperspace transit, the X-wing is equipped with an Incom GBk-585 motivator HCU (hyperspace control unit). The motivators on each engine provide a class one performance.
The X-wing's main fuselage houses most of its essential electronic components. The nosecone contains the primary sensor array, consisting of a Fabritech ANs-5d "lock track" full-spectrum transceiver, a Melihat "Multi-imager" dedicated energy receptor and a Tana Ire electrophoto receptor. An alternate configuration typically contained a long range Phased Tachyon Detection Array model #PA-9r, and a short range Primary Threat Analysis Grid model #PG-7u. The array feeds information through a shielded multiplexer relay to the ANq 3.6 sensor computer. The unit can track up to 1,000 moving sublight objects, acquire 20 possible targets, and can be programmed for extra sensitivity to 120 specific sensor signatures. At the very rear of the craft is a Fabritech k-blakan mini sensor providing the pilot a view of the ship's rear arc. One of the X-wing's primary weaknesses is a blind spot at the rear of its belly.
A Bertriak "Screamer" active jammer is the standard sensor jammer employed by X-wing fighters. The Screamer isn't powerful enough to jam capital-scale sensor systems, but it can interfere with homing warheads and jam starfighter sensors.
Four identical Taim & Bak KX9 laser cannons are mounted on each S-foil wingtip. During combat situations, the S-foils split into attack position, deploying in an "X" configuration. This increases the fighter's field of fire, and ensures that all lasers target in to a specific "zero" point, typically half a kilometer from the fighter. The lasers are powered by the engine power converters and are fed by dynoric energy lines that run the surface of the S-foils. A number of X-wings used Taim & Bak IX4 laser cannons instead. The New Republic era fighters employ even more powerful cannons. The laser cannon efficiency is one of the hallmarks of the X-wing starfighter. At full recharge, this allows for continuous fire.
For long range targeting, the fighter has two Krupx MG7 proton torpedo launchers housed in the main fuselage. Each launcher fires from a three-torpedo magazine for a total payload of six warheads. For added accuracy in bombing runs, a targeting computer screen mask extends on a mechanical arm to assist the pilot with precise firing data. The refitted X-wing recon fighters have had the proton torpedo launcher removed and replaced with high-gain long range sensors, processors and high-speed hypertransceivers.
Some X-wings were equipped with decoy and carbon-fiber chaff mines that could be fired in dogfight situations. The decoys would broadcast a sensor signature similar to the X-wing, confusing enemy scanners. The carbon-fiber chaff mines would create dangerous clouds of sensor-opaque debris that could damage pursuing vehicles or prematurely detonate incoming warheads.
The X-wing's deflector shield generator is in the aft section of the vessel. It produces basic shield matrices through a catalyzation process, and then feeds deflector ducts scattered along the fighter's surface. The Chepat "Defender" projectors along the S-foil surfaces generate the starboard and port shields. This supplements the hardened titanium armor alloy of the X-wing. The expensive and high-strength alloy sedrellium is used to reinforce the X-wing's hull.
Throughout the Galactic Civil War, the Alliance always had precious few X-wing fighters compared to the Empire's seemingly endless arsenal of TIE craft. As a result, the Alliance X-wings were often in a state of constant use. A "new" X-wing is a rare sight, as the starfighters showed the wear and tear that their pilots would subject them to. Common models of fighters in the Galactic Civil War included the T-65B and the T-65C-A2.
The heroic Red Squadron that succeeded in destroying the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin was composed of X-wing fighters. The survivors of this squadron where organized by Commander Narra and Lt. Commander Luke Skywalker into the nascent Rogue Group. Under the command of Wedge Antilles, Rogue Squadron emerged as the premiere X-wing starfighter force in the galaxy.
At the Battle of Endor, Wedge had the option to outfit his squadron with newer fighters like the A-wing or B-wing. Instead, he opted to go with the venerable X-wing fighter. During that fateful battle, Rogue Squadron flew as Red Group, to honor the pilots of the first Death Star battle.
Rogue Squadron soon became a symbol of the Alliance itself, and the New Republic that would follow. It played key roles in battles over Bakura, Borleias, Coruscant and Thyferra. Older cruiser captains often resented the glamour afforded to the X-wing pilots, and nicknamed them "X-wing hotshots."
Later, with the introduction of new fighters like the A-9 Vigilance Interceptor and the E-wing fighter, the X-wing was pushed from the limelight. Eventually, after years of research and modification, Incom unveiled a new faster Incom T-65AC4 fighter that can compete on its own in the modern starfighter combat arena. The older X-wings are being refitted into T-65BRs, or reconnaissance X-wings.
The recon fighters have their missile weapons replaced with advanced sensors and communication gear. In addition, these X-wings are equipped with sophisticated self-destruct sequence that wipes the ship's computer, destroys the astromech with a shaped charge, kills the pilot with a lethal injection and then finally detonates a baradium charge that not only destroys the X-wing, but is powerful enough to cripple a nearby ship.
Thirteen years into the New Republic's rule, Incom introduced the T-65D-A1 X-wing starfighter, which featured notable changes. To standardized performance in the New Republic forces, General Wedge Antilles ordered that all older model X-wings be updated to conform to the new specs. The new model featured an advanced computer system that integrated all the functions of the supplemental astromech droid into one package. As such, the T-65D-A1 needed no astromech socket, and did not sport one. The new X-wing's advanced computer system was accessible from the cockpit, allowing the pilot more customizable options during flight and combat.
The introduction of the T-65D-A1, unfortunately, was exploited by would-be terrorists. Each new computer system retrofitted into an older X-wing, or that came standard with a newer model, was equipped with a hidden explosive detonator. This insidious sabotage was set to go off when a specific combination of computer commands was executed. This act grounded the New Republic X-wing arsenal for a time, and seriously hampered the success of the T-65D-A1 refit.
In an effort to stave away obsolescence, Incom continually revisits and updates the X-wing design. The latest incarnation is the XJ X-wing. Sporting a trio of proton torpedo launchers, improved speed, armor and maneuverability, the XJ model is a cutting edge design that is still faithful to the classic T-65 that inspired it. It is a common vessel found in the ranks of the new Jedi Order

I'm actually amazed that the stats Viper posted, and the stats I posted were almost the same. I got my stats out of the Star Wars Technical Journal 1995edt, I was afraid that the stats I had would be old. heh

You guys will never reach full understanding until you read this: http://members.lycos.co.uk/JAHMP/starwar.htm

I have a picture of the Slave II somewhere, it is in one of my "ships of star wars" books...dunno where it went. Again, will have to consult girlfriend to find it (hell, maybe i'll get to "root" around in her room!!!)

Xwings only at 500 meters convergence? I figured with unlimited ammo, they'd set the convergence out to at least a km and spray and pray! ;) I mean, everyone has their CHog convergence at 650 yards and utilizes spray and pray in AH don't they? :D
-
why spray and pray when you have proton torps???

Whats with hiting people over the head with fish stuff:confused: :p
