Vickers Wellington; Maybe best medium-weight British bomber.

This aircraft was a Vickers Wellington 1C, serial #T2501, designation ?F-LN?, flying with Squadron No. 99, RAF at the time of capture.

 


On December 4, 1940 Wellington #T2501, commanded by F/O F. H. Vivian, took off from an airfield near Newmarket, England on a mission to bomb targets in the Ruhr valley.  Six bombers of the group returned to base, three diverted to targets of opportunity.  Only F/O Vivian found and bombed the target.  Over the target area Wellington #T2501 was hit by flak and made a forced landing on a Lufwaffe airfield located at Vitry-en-Artois, France.  Germans based at this airfield, made F/O Vivian and crew POW.

 

The Luftwaffe repaired the aircraft and it was flown to the Test and Evaluation Center at Rechlin, Germany where the aircraft was painted with German markings and designated ?5+4?.
