All Japnese commercial type ships seem to have 'Maru' in the name - what does 'Maru' mean/translat?

My first post ...
"Maru" is used as (diminutive) suffix, with name of people,
katana, musical instruments, ships, dogs, etc.
For example, if you have a dog, you can call it "Taro Maru",
"The Sting" is translated as "Turanuki Maru".
Minamoto no Yoshitune(well you may not know) had his childhood
name, "Ushiwaka Maru".
"Maru" is from "Maro", a word which was used in old japanese
language in similar ways, almost 1000 years ago.
