PETA CALLS FOR BAN ON FISHING
by BRIAN WEDEMEYER
A well-known animal rights group wants to ban fishing on
Arizona's state parks.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals recently sent a letter to
State Parks Director Ken Travous asking that "this violent activity be
banned."
"It's a common myth that fish can't feel pain," said Dan Shannon, the
group's campaign coordinator. "That is simply not true. It's like thrusting
a cat or dog's head in the water and holding them there. There are plenty
of ways to enjoy state parks without contributing to the cruelty of animals."
The group has made similar requests to about 12 other states, claiming that
a ban would also take pressure off under funded, overcrowded and polluted
park systems.
Shannon said the group doesn't expect to see any results overnight.
"We've gotten some sympathetic ears," he said. "We don't see this as a
harmless pastime, and if we're able to raise awareness and shift public
opinion, I think that's a significant victory."
Lake Havasu features two state parks - Windsor Beach and Cattail Cove.
State Parks officials did not return messages from Today's News-Herald.
A recent study funded by Anglers United and the American Sportfishing
Association estimated that fishing on Lake Havasu generates nearly $50
million annually for the local economy.
Seven federal, state and local agencies have invested more than $13 million
towards the Lake Havasu Fisheries Improvement Program since 1992.
The program's main objectives are to improve shoreline access, increase
sports fishing opportunities and improve the dwindling population of two
endangered fish native to the Colorado River - the razorback sucker and
bonytail chub.
"Any time you're fishing or hunting for food there's going to be some
injury involved," said Bob Koepee, president of the local chapter of
Anglers United. "The good Lord is the one who showed us how to fish and
provide for ourselves. He put animals on this earth to take care of human
beings."
About 30,000 razorback suckers have been stocked in the lake in recent
years as part of the fisheries program.
Shannon said fish have central nervous systems like animals currently being
protected.
"They can feel pain and suffering just like any other animal can," he said.
"The stress they undergo during the act of fishing can be pretty severe."
Now, I have friends that are democrats, do you think THEY will write their congressmen and senators and ask them to disregard these type of renegade domestic terrorist groups?
-
Whoops! Too early in the morning! Move this to the OC please!

I agree, but after you get done cleaning them, their will to live seems to disipate. :)

Funny part of that statement is that most of these folks are Pro-Choice!

Is PETA really on the left or does their agenda of animal protection simply run counter to the gun toting right?
For that matter, are all gun owners republicans (or right)?
No, they are not.
-
PETA is off in left field, so, yes, they are on the left. :)

They lobby with the democrats, does that answer your question?
-
Well... not everyone on the left agrees with PETA. In fact... I've searched all over looking for Democratic affiliation with PETA and I can't find it. Please... show me.
The statement "liberal left trying to strip you of what you enjoy" also seems to run counter to the purposes of the ACLU, another leftist organization that has the wacky agenda of protecting your ability to do whatever the hell you want (as long as the right to do so is guaranteed by the Constitution).
Oh... and while searching through PETA, I found this (http://www.realimpact.net/rihurl.ram?file=realimpact/peta/video_switchable/fixcat.smi). Seems they have a sense of humor after all. :)

lol
I'd love to see some dude try and stop me from fishing. I'd really love it if they send one of those rafts that greenpeace sends to the ships in the ocean. I'd love the chance to cast a double treble hooked crank bait at one of them jokers, I think watermelon green would work the best :D
Hell yeah fish feal pain, that's why they flip around when you pull the hook out of their mouth, and when you gut them (while they are still alive  ) Hell they still flip around after they are in the trash can with no meat left. But they don't flip around once they are in the oven or in the greese ;) What about us fishermen?!?! I stuck a hook in my finger the other day! AND I got stabbed by a baby white bass' dorsal fin! I demand that some group loby for congress to have the wild life department geneticly engineer a fish with no spines!!!
-
I dunno, PETA seems pretty reactionary-right to me. Always wanting to leave things the way they were in the "old days" before these liberal new fangled fishing rods came out.
-
"That is simply not true. It's like thrusting

Yeah, fishing is just like that .... I think Mr Shannon should remove his head from where it is obviously thrusted before he sneezes and blows his tonsils out
-
Sheeesh, I'm a leftist who loves fishing and sport diving. As a matter of fact, tho, Ripsnort has a good point- take a second to email your reps and ask them to disregard these wackos. (I also own guns and consider it my congressional right to own guns)
BTW- PETA is no more left wing than David Koresh was right wing. If you conservatives quit claiming PETA is left wing then us liberals will quit claiming Caligua is right wing. :)
-
They never talk about the crops, though.
The crops! THE crops! THE CROPS! ARRRRGHHHHH!!!!
ENTIRE communities wiped out in a single pass of the combine!
Viscious sharp metal cutting edges slicing generations of wheat stalks from their bond with Mother Earth with clacking metallic regularity. The grains.. the future generations... ground to powder and baked at 300 degrees! My COD! The inhumanity! The straws displayed in "trophy bales" on Halloween..... sniff.
Gentle Bibb lettuce, uprooted and left to DIE in the hot sun.
Arrrghh! The pain! The PAIN!
Can you imagine the screams from a field of watermelons as the grim faced pickers approach? Unable to run away, unable to hide despite their attempts at camoflage they are totally at the mercy of man.
Yet not a tear from the PETA folks about THIS genocide!
Hummph!
-
LOL! I love the visual of all those poor crops betting wiped out by the evil Combine. But it's PETA Toad...not PETP (people for the ethical tratment of plants).
PETP would ask that you not walk on the grass, cut the grass, dry the grass and most importantly don't roll the grass and smoke the grass.
-
Plants are LIVING THINGS too!
Why is it plants grow better when people talk to them? Eh?
I just hope ROCKS aren't alive.. I've been subsiting on reconstitued rock powder for several years now.. hate to give that up. Pretty high in minerals but carbs and proteins are low. :(
-
PETA speaks, I hear "we're nuts, we're crazy, blah blah blah, poor animals, crazy crazy crazy..."
I wonder if grain fed vegans make for good steaks? ;)

SOB... your past, current and future intimate relationships with trout prohibit you from speaking objectively on this subject. Move along.

Next thing ya know, they'll make it illegal for me to burn my neighbors kittens alive.
-
Don't walk on the grass! It feels pain too!
Everytime you urinate on the ground, you kill a worm... think of the worms!
Everytime you spray RAID on ants, they shudder in unimaginable pain! Stop supporting ant torture!
You know those PETA freaks use insect repellant and stuff like that on insects.. but since insects are "creepy" and "disguisting".. it just doesn't fit with their agenda.

The Center for Consumer Freedom, a coalition of restaurant operators, revealed information during a congressional hearing that PETA has made several donations over the past six years to Earth Liberation Front and individuals or groups associated with the Animal Liberation Front. In some cases the money was given to legal support committees for eco-terrorists who were apprehended.
The donations by PETA were documented using IRS records. In making the disclosure, Richard Berman, executive director for the Center for Consumer Freedom, said, "People are deceived by PETA's self-portrayal as a warm and cuddly animals rights organization. PETA should explain to their contributors why their money was used to help finance domestic terrorism."
One of PETA's contributions was $45,200 to a support committee for Rodney Adam Coronado. Coronado was convicted of firebombing an animal research laboratory on the campus of Michigan State University. ALF claimed credit for the fire.
James Jarboe, the FBI's domestic terrorism section chief, says ALF and ELF combined have committed more than 600 criminal acts in the United States since 1996, resulting in damages in excess of $43 million. ELF and ALF are loosely connected and considered terrorist groups by the FBI.
While eco-terrorists generally claim not to harm animal or human life, try telling that to Brian Cass, managing director of Huntingdon Life Sciences in England. Cass was returning home recently when three masked men attacked him with baseball bats. Huntingdon is Britain's oldest drug testing firm. Although the vast majority of drug tests are done on rats and mice and not dogs or cats, animal rights groups have targeted these labs. The Center for Consumer Freedom says PETA is linked to groups involved in driving Huntingdon out of business. Tactics have included firebombing the cars of employees and phoning death threats.
PETA concentrates on the silly stunts, recruiting celebrities and raising money for the animal rights movement. It leaves the dirty work to these other groups. Bill Maher of ABC's "Politically Incorrect" is on the board of PETA. Maybe he will find full-time work there now that ABC is considering canceling his show in revamping its late night lineup.
With all the resources it has, PETA does very little to actually help animals. Most of its success is in stirring public opinion and applying pressure to the farm and food industry, the medical community, biotech firms, federal land management agencies, zoos and circuses-anyone using animals in ways that don't meet its approval. If that pressure doesn't work, eco-terrorist groups can take it to the next level. Their targets and their rhetoric are remarkably similar. It's time PETA was exposed and not the women it dupes into taking off their clothes.

I always wondered how someone in PETA might feel if they had a Fireant nest in their yard where their children play.
What a moral dilemna...possibly sacrifice a small child's life if they were stung to death...or commit genocide and slaughter thousands of innocent Fireants.

I'd like to see them waltz up to a grizzly and scold him or her for brutalizing salmon and trout with their paws and teeth before they carry it away and eat it alive.

PETA doesn't give a toejam about animals at all. About 6 months ago somebody posted a link here to website called bonsaikitten which supposedly stuffed kittens into plastic jars so they would be deformed into those shapes. Joke or no joke I was pissed off enough about this and wrote e-mails to both ASPCA and PETA. ASPCA sent me a personalized reply detailing all their efforts against this site and how they pursued it from one web host to another trying to get it kicked off the net. They also suggested some things you could do to put pressure on this website. PETA sent me jack toejam except a an autoresponder canned "Thanks for your message!". I guess they were too busy issuing some whacko terrorist funds and sueing evil corporations than reply to my concerss about animal abuse. I hope one day that all people who belong to PETA can all be arrested and shot, they are useless degenerates unworthy of life!

Peta, whether you consider them left right or whatever is an example of an extremist group wanting to impose their agenda on everyone else. God help us if they get a strong hold on a regulatory basis (like the EPA) where everythng remotely related to animals has to be aproved by them.
No one forces a peta member to fish, hunt, wear leather or eat meat so why do they think THEY have the right to tell others what THEY have to do.
-
Heh, I've forgotten a lot of the details, but this thread brings back to mind an event that happened when I was living in Colorado several years back. There was an eco-terrorist group set fire to one of the restaurant-lodges at a ski resort (Vail I think?) during the summer. They did this in protest to the resort being allowed to use another 800ish acres of national forest for new ski trails. What was funny and ironic as hell about it, though, was that the blaze started a forest fire that wound up torching many more acres than that which was going to be used for ski trails.
I'd be wary of going fishing in the future. These people will probably start aiding the fish's cause by helping them to don suicide bombs that are activated with the set of a hook. !Viva la revolucion de los pescados!
-
That Jesus guy must of been a cruel bastard. I'm sure you guys heard about the loaves and fishes thing.
-
Who will speak for the single-celled animals?
Don't think that they don't have feelings just because they're little.

Rip, sometimes pinheadedness interferes with intelligence.
Just thought you'd like to know.

Mauser, that is part of nature. Udie killing Bass in Texas is not. Us followers of PETA believe in the sanctity of Mother Earth and Her plan, and all we try to do is prevent humans from exploiting animals. Now anybody got any good porn links??
PS- PETA members backed President Bush over Al Gore by a 4 to 1 margin. In fact Ronald Reagan's portrait hangs in every PETA lodge.

I sure as hell am part of nature and me killing bass, catfish, crappie, drums, doves, deer or hogs is part of nature too because I do it for food, and it's fun too :D.
I've never had an animal I killed stuffed and I never will. I caught a 3 to 4 lb crappie fish, the biggest I've ever seen. Everybody here in Tx that saw the picture yelled at me for eating it, it sure did taste good. I'd never consider taking another life for vanity.
In fact, I'd go as far to say that most state size limit laws do more to harm fish than my fishing does. Ever seen what happens to a 8-12" fish that;s too small to keep that swallowed the hook? Hint, it floats afterwards. I'd just as soon keep that dead fish and eat it, but the state will fine me and take my fishing liscence from me, for life possibly.
Fact remains that I'm at the top of my food chain. Anything under me that looks like it may taste good is fair game as far as I'm concerned. That doesn't mean I torture animals either. I use them for their intended purpose, food. Oh yeah, most of these fish wouldn't even exist if it weren't for man and his need to build lakes and stock them with game fish......

It sounds like PETA got the joke and ASPCA did not. Bonsai Kitten (http://www.bonsaikitten.com) is still there and it's still funny.

lol Udie.. ants
I guess we should stop harvesting vegatables too since some studies have shown they feel pain.. respond to stimuli..
all we can eat are rocks.

nothing against cats, heard they make good shark bait .. j/k
but I'd like to stuff two cats that live down the road in little glass jars then insert them up their owners arse
why would you have a cat & leave it outside to roam the hood, using everyones yard as a litter box and leaving paw prints on their cars
Keep your cat inside and I'll keep my akita/german shepherd mix in too - patiently waiting for cat to get close enough to sliding glass door to backyard .... :)

Anyone who considers "mankind" not a part of the natural order of things is seriously deluded. They (we) are a part of nature and that means we do have a part in the food chain. The fact that we are at the top of it does not negate our presence there. Those who feel they are not a part of nature have a deep seated hatred of themselves (and their species) and should be pitied.
They also have a very slanted concept of freedom. It's called do what I say because I am more equal than you and have the right to dictate your life based on MY beliefs.

As a member of PETA I must come to the defense of our organization from the slanderous and scurrilous posts polluting this thread.
We at PETA feel we are, indeed, at the top of the food chain- provided we have electricity, guns, an army and a police force to protect us. Sheeeit, tell me you're at the top of the food chain if you're swimming with a shark- or facing a hungry mountain lion- or even facing an angry goose. Put down your weapons, human, and you'll find out just how far down on the food chain you DESERVE to be but are propped up artificially by the inventions of people much more clever than you.
It's not a part of the natural order to have unnatural implements such as guns and knives. Take away the advantages of technology and humans are someplace between a rabbit and a hamster on the food chain. We are soft, white, plump hairless delacies for any other creature that decides they want to sample us...from rats to cats.
We are currently reviewing our policy towards plant abuse thanks in no small part to that gut wrenching post by Toad concerning the killer combine, and presently we are leaning towards including plants in a new blanket orginazation called PETAPAN, or the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Plants And Nature.
We have determined only fungi should be consumed as research has shown this lower form of plant life to have a primitive nero-pain center in relation to more advanced plant life. Higher forms of plant life should remain natural and without cultivation as Nature has intended it, although in keeping with our pro-choice agenda the eating of nuts and seeds is allowable provided no new plant has begun to sprout from these seeds. These plant fetuses, or uncracked nuts, are entirely without viability and never have begun to exist provided they haven't yet formed a tap root.
PETAPAN will fight for the rights of plants and animals to compete on an equal footing with man on this "food chain" ladder- we will not rest until no guns are used in hunting, no lures are used in fishing and no hoes are used in gardening.

Please do :) But I must clarify that I said I was at the top of "my" food chain. There are plenty of people who are no where near the top.

Well, I'm clever enough not to swim with a shark. If I ever do I will be clever enough to bring a bang stick and large knife with me, just in case I need some shark steak ;)

Guns are made of natural materials, created by natural beings, invented by natural beings with natural brains. So are knifes and fishing poles even bows and arrows.
