Kazaa and SpyWare (http://news.com.com/2009-1023-885144.html)
Check it out... I'm beginning to really really dislike Kazaa.
-
please, i am an idiot 15 year old-flight sim pilot.....
WHAT DOes this mean??? can u sum it up or somethin?
-
Brilliant Digital Entertainment software came with Kazaa.
Kazaa's 2,644-word "terms of service" contract stated that Brilliant might tap the "unused computing power and storage space" of your computer if you install Kazaa.
Something you might not have realized when you started downloading all of those MP3 files...
-
There's a program out there called Kazaa Lite...it's basically a version of Kazaa hacked into and stripped of it's spyware components. I've been using it for a while, and it seems to work just fine with the Kazaa network.

^ kazaa lite AND spyware remover.
-
You can remove the spyware parts and keep kazaa running.
1. Go to Windows Control Panal and remove with "Add/Remove Programs" the "b3d Projector"
2. Go to your Windows-directory and delte the BDE folder
3. Go to Temp-directory (in Windows) and remove the folder "Brilliant"
4. Locate and destroy the following files:
bdedownloader.dll
bdedata2.dll
bdefdi.dll
bdeinsta2.dll
bdeinstall.exe
bdesecureinstall.cab
bdesecureinstall.exe
bdeverify.exe
bdeverify.dll
5. Locate and destroy the following files
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.b3ds
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\b3ds_auto_file
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\BDESmatInstaller.BDESmartInstaller
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\BDESmatInstaller.BDESmartInstaller.1
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{67925165-C4B6-11D2-B9C6-0000E84F59A6}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{82FC7881-AACC-11D2-B9C6-0000E842E40A}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Brilliant Digital Entertainment
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zupdate
6. Search and destroy the 3dUpdate value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Thats it.
After this Kazaa will continue to run and Brilliant Spware has been eliminated.
;)

Or even easyer is to open the BDE folder and click the BDEuninstall.exe which uninstalls the program and gets rid of the registry settings automatically.
-
No - after running the uninstall programm the described components remain in the system!
So be sure that they have been eliminated.
-
Babek I did a search and checked even the registry - they were all gone.
Note that I first clicked the bdecleaner.exe which deleted the files, then I went to windows uninstall and uninstalled the bde from there.. After that I couldn't find any other trace of BDE except the folder and the bdecleaner.exe itself - which I deleted after that.
One way to find out BDE is working is to check your firewall..
If there's a marking for zupdate.exe - block it's internet access if you weren't smart to block it immediately when first asked and find BDE to remove it.
But there's another problem.. And that is Cydoor ad/spyware.
Kazaa has two embedded adware progs and cydoor seems to be the tougher one to remove. Kazaa won't start without it.. So I think people are better off getting the hacked version.
-
Wow - thx for the information.
I thought my computer was safe but now I will deinstall Kazaa and follow the installation hints of Kazaa Lite and the Ad-Aware module.
-
yep, and kazaa lite dont have those annyoing popup ads or bonzi buddy reminders.
-
Thx for the link Tac!
<--- was always Scared to click on the Bonzo buddy ;)
-
K-lite sucks toejam. all it has done for me is make it so i dont share any files, and now, all my files say "unknown" like the artist, catigory....that really pisses me off. because i have over 200 videos...now howmi gonna find the one i want!??!?!
-
I have followed the instructions, deinstalle Kazaa and installed K-lite.
Its running perfectly and Panic Room is a very nice film;)
Thanks for the informations and the links.

LOL this is ironic.
Kazaa users steal intellectual property. So Kazaa steals some of their bandwidth and CPU time. Cry me a river.
If a thief gives you something, you shouldn't expect him to not take something in return.
:)
-
Well... first we'd have to agree that it's stealing. I'm not so sure and neither is Baen publishing.
Check out their website at http://www.baen.com/library/.
They allow you to download books for free and get this... according to their numbers, their sales increase because of it.
-
I 100% agree with the free copy thing. I have bought all of the games I like, but I tried most of them extensively before buying them. Some were legit demos, but I have more than a few ripped copies of games laying around given to me by friends. If they survived more than a month on my hard drive, I got a legit copy.
Look at HTC... they have the most open game of any of the online flight sims. Only the main arena servers are not free. Yet they seem to be doing much better than their competition.
I would like to believe most people are decent and will pay a fair price for a fair product as I generally do, despite the number of friends I know who do otherwise because they are too cheap or too poor to get things legitimately.
Though I don't mind seeing pirates like Microsoft getting a taste of their own medicine by having people pirate their software: eye for an eye.
-
Looks like Kazaa lite is not that lite either..
I get randomly ad popups while minimising it.
Those bastards.

hehe funked up I've been sitting here reading this thread laughing and thinking the exact same thing.
too funny

KAZAA is crap it takes over 3 hours to download a simple 1 mb song. WINmx is way way better
not that my feelings care im only a 15 year old flight sim pilot
-
Kazaa light is working great for me. I haven’t had any problems with it nor received any ad’s. I also have an ad blocker running though.
Vorticon – get something besides two tin cans tied together and you might be able to down load a little better ;). I made a list the other night of 15 songs. It took me about 10 minutes to find, select, and have them all downloaded. It would have been faster if I could have queued more at one time.
-
depends on your connection and computer
i have a comp running windows xp with a amd athlon xp procceseer and shaw cable internet. still worked like crap tho till we switched to win mx
-
i have the regular kazaa
you got a piece for a computer if it takes you an hour to download a song.
i have a p4 1.4 with a cable connection and i get 2-3minuet downloads on almost all my songs i download.
-
I have KAZAA-LITE. Before I used MORPHEUS and KAZAA.
I cant see any difference in the download speed of these three programms.
A 700MB-film will download within 24 hours - smaller films in shorter time.
So everything is OK for me.
-
Doesn't all this free-booting slow down the internet and throw off my aim in AH?
I think we should be told.
BTW, Tac's link doesn't work for me. I just get a page written in a bunch of code. I looked at the page source and picked out another webaddress, but that didn't work either. Any ideas?
