Title: Panzer vs B. & O.
Post by: CavemanJ on April 19, 2002, 01:01:05 PM
Got bored today so I drove a panzer out to a train station.  Set up at the base of a hill looking back toward the station to sit and ambush trains.  Turns out I was about 1200yds from where the train spawns and starts it's run.

It was interesting.  The locomotives could take 2 AP hits at <1000yds and keep right on steaming.  The box cars could take 2 HE shells at close range.  After detaching a section of the from the locomotive and blowing one or two of the cars the rest seemed to take only 1 HE shells (at ranges up to 1600yds) to destroy.

Should these locomotives be able to keep on going after taking 2 75mm AP rounds?

Heck Yes! Hitting a Choo Choo in the boiler only adds metal to the already uber thick boiler plating!  :^)

Ok, just wondering.  I popped one at less than 200yds.

Don't know how thick that plating is :D

Hi Caveman,

No, a Loco shouldn't be able to take a high velocity 75mm AP round and keep going. The Boilers where easily penetrated by .50 cal AP and the explosions when hit are quite spectacular.

If you watch gun camera films of P-51s and 47s strafing German locos you'll see the boilers being hit and great clouds of steam shooting up the smoke stacks and out the sides. The box cars also probably would go up with 1 HE hit, but heaven help you if you hit an ammo car from within 500 yards. In that case you would probably have created the first truly airborne Panzer.
