Why are there trails after the CV & GV shells?

Condensation.
Yeah, that's it.

Well the truth is I could cop out and say "relax, its just a game' but that would be a.......well........cop out.
You have a good question there. Might I try and postulate thats its a gameplay issue allwoing the gunner to trace the path of his rounds. Honestly, Pyro will have to answer this one since he is afterall the Vice President and the big gun on gameplay.

You have to admit the lasck of an appreciable hit sprite with the heavy guns would make spotting difficult.
The tails also makes finding the fleet, easy.
Of course, if HT were a very good programmer he could EASILY make large hit sprites so the trails would not be needed.
How many points is that? :)

It's simply to make being able to spot your rounds vs other peoples easier.

then why don't the AA guns (5"?) have tracers?

How about the ability to adjust tracer color? Gets awfully confusing when all 3 batteries on the CA are manned and sending full broadsides into a field.
Also need to be able to change'em for for a spotter to see. Several my squadmates have become pretty good at directing 8" fire from 20k+, but with more than one gunner firing the 8" guns it gets confusing.

Cuz you can watch those suckers fly in the scope! Pretty impressive!
