I was a huge fan of "Dawn of Aces", as it had some really neat innovations, like Zeppelins and artillery spotting. The fighting in WWI aircraft was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the DOA acronym turned out to be all too prophetic, as "Dawn of Aces" development was left to stagnate over at IMOL. The potential of DOA was huge, methinks, but it became a victim of "Personnel movement"(Hitech and co leaving en masse) at IMOL. I was hugely disappointed at the time, and I still am. By the time I moved over to Aces High, I was flying DOA more than I was Warbirds.
So, seeing as how DOA development has been pretty much dormant ever since....
I was wondering if HiTech and Pyro have considered opening up a WWI arena, complete with that same artillery spotting, the Zeps, the great canvass birds of the "Great War"?
I know that with the small development staff at HTC, only so much can be done, but if they ever consider expanding, I just want to cast one vote for the revival of WWI air combat that got off to such a good start in DOA.
-
Oh yeah! LOVED DOA! Loved my Camel and ABSOLUTELY loved the need to actually shoot and aim good instead of just making snapshots/recieving snapshots.
The Zeps were great fun too, arty spotting over a field was amongst the funniest things ya could do!
GIVE US Dawn of Aces High!
-
This is a fantastic idea! Although I never had the chance to play DOA, I have really enjoyed many WW1 sims in years past. I would very much welcome an arena with a WW1 theme. HT, Pyro, any chance of this coming to life?
-
Ok far to much positiveness in here :)
I played DOA it was not bad and ok for a bit of fun, didnt like it as much as Warbirds wwii, the aircraft seemed real slow and it didnt have that seat of your pants flying you get with wwii aircraft. but thats just my opinion.
It was nice to dive in there for a bit of a change now and then, the main problem was the compleat lack of numbers, i went in there many times and at its peak had about 70 players, during less prime times you was lucky to find someone to shoot at.
Would be nice for chnage now and then, to play just for a good crack, but i cant see it taking off the way wwii dogfightig dose :)
but you never know :)
-
Hehe, I can imagine a gang bang at 7 thousand feet with top speed at 120 kias :D
Oh the Humanity!!! ;)
-
DOA was fun!
The only thing I didn't like was the camel jockies that would scrape their wings on the ground to turn faster.
Loved the Zeps.
-
It was the zeppelins I loved the most. I was facinated with them as a kid, building models and reading everything ever written on the history of lighter-than-air aviation. DOA was the first sim to feature them as a player-controlled craft. Interestingly enough, zeppelin driving was very much like submarine driving. Hmm...submarines are coming to AH eventually. Coincidence?
-
I loved DoA far more than I ever did WB. I would be ecstatic for Dawn of Aces High....
...as you might imagine, I am also watching for Target: Flanders. ;)
P.S. Wilbus, it is obvious you never flew the DVa. It most certainly did have a tendency to die to snapshots. Flying that plane in a sea of Camels would make people who cry about Spitfires, Nikkis, and La7s shut up for good... ;)
-
I tried DOA about the same time I was introduced to Aces High. I evaluated both sims about 3 months.
It was an easy call. While I REALLY prefer WW1 birds, I am 100% addicted to the frequent changes that occur in AH: New aircraft, new ground targets, new water bound targets, new strategies, new maps and etc.
But, innovation of this type requires a few skillful and dedicated individuals. If HiTech/Pyro started splitting their time between two sims (ww1 & ww2), neither would get the time it deserved.
I think our best hope is for HTC to find and hire several guys like HiTech & Pyro to do WW1.
SeaWulfe pointed the following link out to me. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Better yet, let's subsidize HTC to buy BOP (above link.)

A MMP WWI air combat game/sim is what I've been waiting for. RB3D was it.... but Sierra flushed it down the toilet, plus the FM got all fugged up and... well anyway, when I play Il-2 I find myself looking for games that you can only fly the PZL P11c in because it's so slow and is like WWI speeds basically.
Someday... maybe... but I think there's more WWII wannabes than WWI wannabes.

I'm not business expert but IMHO DOA was a tragic waste of resources. They were devoting time and money to develop that thing while WB2 rotted away. I hope HTC remains focused on AH.
-
Uh... you obviously didn't play DoA. It is in the same incarnation it was 3-4 years ago, and still has a loyal (if small) following. I wouldn't be here right now if more attention had been paid to it.
What hurt WB wasn't only resources pointed into DoA, it was the fact PC and Mac were supported. It's the same flight engine for WB and DoA, just different numbers plugged in (as I understand). The time is split between the artwork, I suppose, but making a new game it wasn't.
-
It was fun for the first few weeks....
-
Kieren, All I know is that they were rolling out new versions of DoA while there will still major bugs and broken/missing features in WB2. I'm guessing this was before your time over there. If they had spent those resources on completing the WB2 project they probably wouldn't have lost my business. I know quite a few WBers who had similar feelings at the time. It's better to do one thing well than to do a bunch of things mediocre.
-
Did they ever incorporate the cockpit graphics for the Zeppelin? That was my final project at IMOL, and I finished on my last day. Last time I checked, it was just a lame wire frame. 'Tis a shame, because I worked very hard on it, and it looked great. C'est la vie......
Good thing I still have all my originals. :)
-
Tease!
-
smart man.
I only gave originals out once... never again.
You never know when you'll re-up an old project.........
-
DoA was awesome.
AcesHigh will NEVER be completed without ALL eras eventually making it in (can you say JOB SECURITY :)
A simple arena with a few birds would suffice:
Sopwith
Spad
Niewport
Albators
Dr1
Dr7 (or whatever the hell that was, great looking)
Another arena with a Mig15 and F86 would kick bellybutton as well
-
I would love just about any time period through Vietnam. After that, air to air is more about who fires the missle first. I agree, though, that if you spread yourself too thin, everything will suffer because of it. I would much rather have an excellent wwII sim that is constantly updated and supported. If a time period is added, though, I think I would prefer Korean war era stuff. I certainly wouldn't turn up my nose at a WWI arena though.
-
I became much better at ACM flying the old crates than I ever would have doing WWII alone. The edge in performance between all the birds was finer, and you had to outhink the other guy more than you do in AH. One wrong move in DoA and you had a spin that cost you 1,000 feet or your ride...
...and there are no chutes...
I agree with Yeager, a simple arena would be great, though I know it won't happen (nor do I expect it to).
-
DOA was a blast, had a lot of fun in there flying the old birds & the Zep.
Really liked the way they setup up arty spotting.
With a bit of practise you could level a field nicely with arty, finish up with zep for capture.
-
S!
Yesyesyesyesyesyesyes!!! :)
I love flying a Camel versus a Dr1.
Only trouble with WWI is that the amount of performance data available is quite limited, and a lot of `seat of the pants`, guestimating has to happen.
Things like roll rate or acceleration were not tested.
Engine horsepower ratings were not exact.
Plus the exact effect of rotary engine torque on turnrate and propensity to spin is difficult to ascertain.
But heck, you can get pretty close with all the reports from the replicas flying around.
Worth a try.
No one else is doing it...
And there are still a lot of RED BARON flyers out there who are hungering for a new Sim. (like me) ;)
-
DVa!!!
I had played WB plenty, I learned to fight in DOA.
DOAH!!!
-
It was tough for me to choose between DOA and AH...
I enjoyed DOA very much, I prefered it over the gameplay that we have here. But it lacked my friends which were flying in AH.
I would love to see a DOA version of this game. You can bet that I would spend most of my time there. But in this crowd we have people begging for B29s.... The mindset is not the same.
-
How many "Flying Circus" guys we have in here? DoA? RB3D? I can remember when DoA had 60-90 guys at night. It dwindled down to around 40 by the time I left, but remember this was a time when 200 in the MA was a big deal. There definitely was interest, but the same planes in place by 1.3 are still there, and the game play didn't change at all. Without new maps, or new planes, or new ways to play it was bound to get stale sooner or later...
DoA was the most fun I ever had in MMOGs.
-
I enjoyed my 6 months in DoA (aka Camelbirds); flew all the planes, but loved the DR1 (and the Runstang, I mean SE5). Good community there too. I think our best bet will be Target:Flanders. I would rather see HiTech put all his resources into AH
-
I want Biwingers in aces High!!!!!!!! Maybe they could ad some ww2 biwingers so they could be played in MA or H2h!
-
i flew rb1, rb23d, FC loved em.
Tried AW3's ww1 arena and what a horrible thing that was... love to see HT take rb3d into MMOPG status though +)

SUPERFLY they did indeed finally add the Zep cockpit...looked great too I might add, well done !:)
-
Got my bellybutton handed to me for a long long time in DOA, but loved the heck out of it still!
It did get old, seeing a sky full of Camels (reminds me of AH and the Spits and Nikis), but I still had a blast.
I heard they finally fixed the DVII's glass tail. Was about damn time. Historically, the DVII was a very dangerous opponent, and it couldn't live up to it's potential in DOA due to the aforementioned tendency to lose it's rudder at the drop of a hat.
I too wish we could someday see HTC develop a WW1 sim along the lines of AH.
But I'd much rather see AH developed more before they did it.
-
Sorry,DOA didn't grab me like RB3D did...And it was free MP...
-
RB3D was prettier, but DoA was more playable from the MMOG standpoint. Same old argument. With today's technology, who knows?
-
Always figured banana as a sort of Harry Spotter, :D
-
Doa was my first online Flight Sim. And I agree with Kieren, it still holds a loyal following despite 2+ years of no development. I would never have held an IEN account or bothered with WB if DOA wasnt there.
I realise its never going to happen but if there were a Dawn of Aces High arena here I would be in there pretty much exclusively.
And no, I checked back in on doa during that free week deal a while back and there was still no zeplin cockpit art.
-
Pretty sure there was cockpit art Roscoe, perhaps you had to download it seperately.
-
VGO has been contracted by iEN to continue development with Dawn of Aces and to eventually bring it up to speed similar to WBIII. (For better or worse, depending on how you look at it!) :)

I have flown DoA offline only, but have not yet been able to shoot any of the drones down!

Well, as long as they don't do an "Aces High Goes to Mars!"
-
YEAH! It'll be cool if HTC did a WW1 arena. I miss flying my D7 in my limited AWDOS flying time when CAF hosted WW1 Night.

-
excelent idea.... AH meets WW1 he he I bet the Camel is Perked and not the Fokker Dr1 (and everybody hates Dr1 drivers as much as Nik2 drivers in AH lol) but anyway YEAH BRING US ww1 (and perhaps korea if it is possible)
-
I'm already getting upset that my Fokker DVII seems to compress so early in a dive!
:p
-
Sigh, a WW1 Flight Sim would be my dream come true.
I love wings with wires :)
I played Red Baron off-line, then Flying Circus on line, then Red Baron 3D. I tried DOA, but the poor graphics, and lazer guns turned me off. Nothing against DOA really, just not my cup of tea, I know a lot of people really enjoyed it. :)
Now I am in AH. A kewl place, but only a stop for me until a decent WWI sim appears.
I miss my Neuport 17s/24s, Sopwith Pups/ Tripehounds and Camels and Snipes.
Actually my favorite matches are a D2 against my DH-2 or N11. :)
Someday my friends, for all things come to those who wait :)
Still, AH is a ever so cool oasis to rest in until someone comes with a decent WWI. Love that F4UD! {as an ex-Marine should ;) ]

AKEagle,
, I don't think you could have expressed it any better.
(Although I am confused about your failing to mention anything about the "simple beauty inherent in the lines of the Albatrossen...")
-
I loved the DVa of DoA. An elegant killer with an Achilles Heel.
-
I signed up for DoA several months back... played a few nights, had some fun. However, there were only maybe 20 people in there... and every single one of them was a day-one, hardcore, super-ace. Talk about no mercy for newbies! At least I deprived them of a kill, many times, by snapping into an unrecoverable spin. :p
Anyway, if I had the time, I could reeeeally get into a WWI sim (my first love**), but until then...
BTW, Birds of Prey looks sweet. Ya think all those models in the galleries will be flyable?
** Every year I make the trip to Rhinebeck, NY. If you are within driving distance, this is a must-see.

Mudd :)
A Faux Paux Sir!
Sigh, manys the sortie I flew in Red Baron as the blood thirsty Hauptmann Otto von Doom, in his feared white winged green fuselaged Alby D2! :)
And of course who can say more than to adorate the DR-1???? Overmodeled in structural integrety in most WWI sims, due I think to the fact that many of us see great heros in Voss and Richtofen. (I have a great affection, and admiration for the Huns of WWI but not so of the LW of WWII)
On line the AKs tended to fly more times as allied. Not a predjudice, it was just that in many WWI sims you had a overbalance of Huns, and the AK would tend to even things out. Also, in RB23D the Allied crates tended to be harder to fly with less effective guns (in earlier plane sets). If you could take it to the Huns your skills as a pilot would definately improve.

ohh yea the Fokker DVII was my love from Red Baron
