Title: My vehicle wish list
Post by: gofaster on April 24, 2002, 01:44:08 PM
I'd like to see the following added, as a way to round out the library of vehicles already offered:

(a) P-40E (or any variant, really).  It fought in so many battles on so many fronts that its absence is criminal!  Sure, it was a dog of an airplane but it could have its uses in a low-alt airfield cap.

(b) M4A2 (or any variant - from an AH perspective they'd play about the same) Sherman tank.  Having another tank besides the Panzer would provide the ingrediants for a very good historical re-enactment.  D-Day anyone? Iwo Jima?  Maybe some Philippines action?  Also opens the possibility of doing a desert warfare scenario, too.

(c) SBD Dauntless dive bomber.  Battle of Midway, Battle of Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, Rabaul, just to name a few battles where it fought.  It managed to sink a battleship and 6 carriers.  Isn't that reason enough to include it?

(d) Either the Aichi D3A Val, Nakajima B5N, or Ju-87 Stuka bombers, but only so I can use them as targets. :) Their use would mainly be for historical scenarios and I doubt anyone would sign up for a slot in one.  Well, maybe the Stuka might attract some attention.

(e) British Matilda (any variant).  Rounding out the tank motor pool for a desert campaign, and could double as a Japanese tank for a nice little Guadalcanal or Philippines battle.

(f) a destroyer that could operate independently of a carrier group.  Might make for some good high-seas encounters.

Just a few ideas.

Japanese:

German:

Italian:

Russian:

US:

British:

Apologies, I got carried away.   These are in no particular order.   I can't tell if its personal bias, but every planeset (apart from US early war) seems pretty well filled out, except for the Japanese.   For a major U.S. and British WWII opponent, they have almost no planes in the game.

I'd like to see the A6M2 or A6M3, but not both - too similar.  Yes, the G4M "Betty" bomber would also be good and would allow more Pacific-themed historical battles.  And of course the Val or Kate bombers would be needed for any sort of Midway, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, or Philippines re-enactment.

For Germany, the Stuka should be added but I don't think there would be much of an audience for it in the Main Arena.  Still, it and the Heinkel bomber would be necessary to do an accurate Battle of Britain campaign.

The P-40 could be used as either a US or a Soviet aircraft, so if it was introduced then maybe there would be no need for another Yak or LaGG as there are already examples of these.

For the US, I am surprised that the A-20 is being introduced instead of the B-25 Mitchell, but I guess the decision was based on how popular the plane would be in the Main Arena.  But with the B-26 Marauder already in the MA, why bring the A-20?  At least the Mitchell offers the possibility of running a Doolittle re-enactment.  I would oppose the introduction of the B-29, as it is just too powerful a bomber, unless it cost a lot of perk points.

Would additional Italian planes attract an audience in the Main Arena?  The Fiat G.55 would be a formidable opponent, with 3 cannons and 2 machine guns, but there are already 2 Italian aircraft.

A great fit for the current vehicle set would be the M-18 Hellcat.

1943 - USA M18 Gun Motor Carriage "Hellcat"
Armament:       1 - 76mm gun
                            1 - 0.5" MG AA
Engine:             Continental, 9 cyl., radial air-
cooled, gas, 340 or 400 hp
Speed;               55 mph
Range;               105 miles
Crew:                  5
Weight;               17 tons

Much smaller and lighter than M-10. Over 2,500 built.
Only AFV designed specifically for TD. Excellent
power-to-weight ratio. Fastest production AFV of WWII .
Used "shoot and scoot" tactics. Also used as an assault
gun and Self-Propelled Artillery. Used the same 76mm gun
as the Sherman. Light  weight and a 400 hp engine gave it
excellent speed and mobility. One of the best Tank Destroyers
of WWII.
