Mk. VIII - The ultimate Merlin-engined Spit. The mainstay of Far East squadrons during the late part of the war.
LF Mk. IX, LF Mk. XVI - Basically the same plane, the only significant difference being the engine's country of manufacture. The mainstay of 2nd TAF squadrons 1943-45.
Mk. XII - The first Griffon Spit to see squadron service. Basically a Mk. V with a single-stage Griffon stuffed in there. Unstable but a great performer.
F 21 - The ultimate WWII Spit. A great perk plane, with similar production and usage to the Ta 152. Slightly better performance than the Mk. XIV, but 4 cannons.

Yes to all but the F21. Dont need a last month of the war Spitfire. Leave that to the LW. Spitfire XIV is a match for anything except a 262 in a Scenario, CT, or TOD setting, if flown smartly.

No please god no. No more spits.
but i thinl we need more hurricanes.:D

The XVI would be a nice inclusion especially the bubble canopy version. I have a book at home (at work so can't give exact reference) where a couple of the New Zealanders who flew IXs, XVIs, and XIVs, said they preferred the handling of the IXs & XVIs to the XIV, but the XVIs seemed to be 20MPH slower at any given altitude. The XVI had the Packard Merlin, which kind of puts a different slant on the "myth" that the Packard Merlins were constructed with better tolerances and therefore gave better performance and longevity. Might just be that the particualr XVIs these guys flew weren't skinned as well as the IXs they flew.
I would really like to see the VIII because many test and service flyers felt that the VIII was the best compromise of handling and performance in the Spitfire family. It could be described as a Merlin Engined XIV in many respects. Retractable tailwheel, C wing, large rudder, great care and attention during construction, powerful Merlin with 2 Stage supercharger, slipper type drop tanks, hard points for 250lb bombs, and a top speed near 400mph at sea level.
Has anyone done a low level performance comparision between the Merlin and Griffon engined Spitfires?

Funked,,,, looks like you need to go to---

I am sure that there are many chapters near you. :D

Well said funked. The only reason to have non-Spitfires is because it is so painful shooting down a beautiful enemy Spitfire in your own beautiful perfect but under-modelled Spit.

Yes, please...

SpitXIV isn't all that . It's about a k84 with better guns and better high alt performance .
Do some duels vs a competent 109g10 pilot and you will find the spit looses approx. 50% of the time . The spits best hope is to evade the g10 long enough untill the g10 runs out of wep .

Another Spitfire!?!?!?!? We already have 5-6 versions!!!
and the later versions are getting to be almost cheating!
I want some biplanes :D
-
Rokkit you are my hero. :)
2 guys in my squadron are making models of that plane.
We also know a couple of brothers whose father flew ZF-P TD317.
I guess I should get busy with the bribes. :D

At the risk of alienating myself from my 308 brethren, I agree with Mitsu . As it is the now the PAC planeset is woefully imballanced . We need about 3 or 4 more Ki's and J2M2 and maybe N1k1-J as soon as possible . Also some earlywar zero's and Vals and Kates would compliment the new wildcats nicely . Then we could have ourselves a nice little Midway scenario .

Hey funked, come on!
Let's sing the song with me, "Show me the Shoki!"

Of course we need more Spits and Hurri's, the PTO is under represented in AH and this would go some ways to putting it right.

funked, I thought this thread was "More Shokis Needed". :D :D :D

why do we need more spits??? We need a early war P-38.. If we get another spit before we get a early war P-38 or the P-38 dive flaps fixed I'll probly just up and quit AH..
