Title: Gunsight Request/Feedback

Not sure what is involved in adding opacity to the gunsight .bmp but it sure would be a nice addition to AH. I know the clouds and smoke have it. Would it be possible to add opacity as well as transparency to the gunsight and/or code for the gunsight??

Would it be too much of a frame rate hit??

the alpha adjustment in AH already allows you to adjust the opacity of the gunsight.

ahh never mind, i found it.

under setup / gunsights / opacity.

that almost get's to the realistic look. but there is the issue of only one color in the .bmp being transparent. I think the way to get it to look more realistic would be to add some sort of opacity to pixels within the .bmp so that we could get more of a glowing effect. Like maybe a dark green (or whatever color your pipper is) would be at a 50% opacity when viewed in AH. The regular megenta would be the transparent. When we would adjust the opacity in the setup, to lets say 75%, the dark green becomes about 25% when viewed in cockpit and the green (or whatever solid color chosen for the pipper) would become 75%.

The problems i forsee is how would HT define a color to be 50% opacity in the .bmp. Lets say my pipper is green and yours is red. Well how would HT define pixels to be opaque in order for us to get the same glowing effects in our sights?

I guess these are the gives and takes of custom colors and gunsights?

HT, any help here? feedback?

I think to do that the gunsight AH would have to be migrated from the current form (bmp) to supporting a giff or something proprietary to allow for the opacity of seperate pixels.

All thats needed is a 32bit image format.  I believe that bmp's are actually able to do it.  Gif's are not, they use indexed color and can only have one transparent color.  You could also use png, which is totally non-proprietary.

Now we wait, with bated breath for the utterance from on high.  Will it be a "1" or a "0"?  We should have a quick poll to see what every one thinks, then after the pronoucement, if we get one, we can spend the next ten days, or until the next annoucement post, debating the core meaning of the answer...

GAWD I love these boards!  :D

The way it would be implemented is with a 2nd bmp file that would be a 256 color grey scale to control the alpha.

Ill take a look to see how easy it is to do the file existance checks to support both methods.

That would just force someone to write a quick script to take a .png and make a .bmp and mask.

My advice, dont use gunsights.
