My favorite 109 move is still the rolling scissors. Nothing in the game can match it.

Got a bogey on your 6? Start by getting his E down a bit by breaking to one side or another, then start scissoring. With luck he will attempt to follow you. When he does, start adding more and more vertical to it. Eventually you will have enough E to roll completely around the enemy, and can choose your moment to kill him.

That's an easy one, since I'm a Jug pilot.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

0G dive to 600 Mph and 100 feet Alt.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

High speed rolling maneuvers work pretty well versus planes that don't handle well at those speeds.

To be honest though, my defensive moves pretty much suck.  I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that a truly defensive Jug is dead if it can't run away.

Hey, what would you guys suggest I do?  Anybody have a defensive suggestion for the poor Jug pilot caught low and slow?  (Other than hit Enter three times?)  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

My best defensive move in both the Jug and the Mustang is slip in unseen and hose the target's 6 all the way from 350 to 100 yards and then blow by the wreckage at 450 indicated.

If that doesn't work, things get a bit doubtful!

Rope-a-dope...

In a 109 I like pulling straight up 90 degrees. Put on WEP, and let any loser fly up thinking they'll get you. Get to the top of your climb and fall back, get your stalled out friend in your sights and blast em. Works almost every time.

I shut my monitor off. If I can't see them, then bastidge SURE can't see me!

P47:  If the bastidge points his nose at me then I oblige em and I use the zoom and starting firing when they're about 1200 out and decreasing rapidly.. Otherwise my fave is to quickly drop downward into a corkscrew for about three to four revolutions, build up speed and then suddenly go verticle into a 1/2 loop ending with a roll onto thier six - well, most times.

Got to be the scissors followed up at the end with a slip and throttle cut.  Unless of course I get position before the slip is necessary.  Then it’s a toss up, I either get the snapshot or get drilled.  If I’ve made it long enough to the slip, I usually end up with a snap.

If someone gets behind me, I'll just switch on the 'vodka dump' switch.
This will then jettison part of the vodka tank contains and drop couple vodka bottles for the enemy.

If im slowish and speed disparity is large, the simple flat sissors works well or barrell-roll defense.

If im fast, rope-a-dope is my trade-mark. Or just run for a while and watch em dive to get the speed to keep up with me, then i slowly climb a bit then level out a bit for a bit more speed (320+), if they are still following, zoom climb for a simple rope-a. Or wait for them to give up, then run them down.

Didnt your mummy tell you that chasing mustangs all by yourself is a dangerous game?

My favourite defensive (when con on my 6)is a corkscrew dive to gain time and make the attacker get in close followed by high-speed sciscors once I decide the con is close enough for it to work.

I try something like funked said when im being jumped from above. The P38 can keep that nose up a loong time and spray lotta lead at a con thats zooming up   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Low and (not too) slow 2 things work.
If bogie on your 6 combine horisontal scissors with vertical and drop the throttle at the right moment = forced overshoot.Dubious against multi cannon sprayers, but nothing new there.
If bogie on or ahead of your wing vectors place him 45 degrees ahead of ving and pull up.Works every time.

In the tiffie... if its a Yak or a 51 high speed dive level off then flick into a high speed barrel roll.

Then try and reverse as fast as possible to ping the wingless <yak/51> with 1 x 20mm to make sure I get the kill  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Or the other is a high speed low level split-S reverse at 3000 asl. I get good aircraft to water results, especially with 109s... they make pretty splashes.

Split esse to avoid initial firing pass, then:

Mustang, Typhoon:  run away.

Spit, Nik, Zero, Yak:  turn.

FW190, Corsair, P47:  scissors.

Me109: climb.

When chased on the deck, I like to do a sort of high yo-yo when theyre about 1.2-2.5k back. So when they get into guns range im headed back at them and almost straight down. The cool part is if they try for a tracking shot theres a good chance they'll auger. Even better is to do it going up and down the side of a hill.

Let him get about 600 or so yards back, I push the stick hard forward as I throttle back, roll left 90 degrees, pull stick hard, roll right 180 degrees, pull hard, watching him the whole time. This works almost every time, only a handful of pilots see it coming. If he tries to throttle back and follow me, he can't slow down as fast as me, and he ends up dead.

That's the plan anyway.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Yeah I luv that. They either nose down for the gun shot - red out and auger - or blow their E leaving you to zoom above them and pick your shot. Or they invert to follow you down and hit the deck. Or they go vertical and time it wrong so you can slip in right behind em  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Depending on the kites and relative E states there are a couple I like

Lag/displacement roll, snatching the throttle to idle when they're about 1500yds back and starting a slow quarter roll away from the best rolling direction of my kite.  When they close to about 700yds I roll 90degrees the other way and hold about 2.5 Gs through a roll.  Sends'em right out front.  Yaks are real good at this (right Hang?  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) )

Drag'em into a defensive spiral.  This works best with kites that can generate ALOT of drag and get minimal acceleration in a dive, like the hogs with thier gear extended.  Gotta be careful setting the bandit up though or they see it coming and zoom into a high yo-yo and yer toast.  If they fall for it you've got a shot inside of 2 revolutions.

I like to do a big continuous lazy high-g barrel roll with the throttle cut if the con is much faster than me.  If he is about the same speed as me:  Roll inverted, cut throttle, drop flaps, pull hard, roll left until rightside up, hit wep, try to shoot them as they fly past you.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Post by: Lephturn on February 06, 2001, 07:52:00 PM
Yeah hblair, I've started trying the same type of move you describe.  The trick is that I keep my speed quite high in the Jug, so I normally don't have a big speed differential to work with.  I think I start it too early and the bogey just sits there and blasts the crap out of me as I flop around stupidly.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I rope-a-dope a lot too, but to be honest I don't class it as a defensive move.  It's more of a sucker move, and as long as I have more E I'm on the offensive.. period.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)  Actually I have more luck with being the ropee.  A slightly lower P47 is almost always underestimated.  I like to come in lower and fast, and use lag pursuit to control my closure rate in the Jug.  This hides my true E state to a degree, and when that predictable 109 goes for the rope-a-dope, I just zoom up and blast 'em from the sky.

Somebody mentioned scissors in a P47.  I don't reccomend it!  The Jug will slow down fast, but at low speed it handles like a brick.  Just about any plane in the game can scissor with a Jug.  The only exception is if you keep the scissors going downward and keep the speed up.  If you can keep it over 250MPH, you can roll well, but your pushing it.  If they have enough smash that you think you can force the overshoot, a barrel roll of some sort is normally a much better option in the Jug.  The roll will rob you of less speed, and the Jug accelerates like crap at low speed, so you need to keep all the speed you can.

Tac, I haven't seen Frenchy's move.  I will tell you that with a bit of E, the Jug handles really well in the vertical.  Even very low speed reversals at the top of vertical moves are very controlable.  Is he pulling some kind of low speed rudder move?  Explain.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

On the deck;

I chop throt, nose up hard, then nose down hard into either a hard right or left break turn depending which side the enema is closest to, pop flaps as much as allowed, and apply hard rudder in direction of turn to keep a/c nose from climbin'.

This usually forces the overshoot, At which point I close up flaps, center control surfaces and open throt w/WEP on. and begin chasing the enema.

Only a few will see it for what it is and barrel roll to stay behind me puttin' the rounds in my cockpit.

Leph,

The more I've thought of defensive moves, the more I've come to the conclusion that in order for any of them to work the attacking pilot must screw up. For example a Bf 109G-10 pilot dives long enough for the stick forces to come really heavy. Someone follows you to a dive, you slow down and start a 'split-S', they might end up ripping the wings or overshoots and you recognize it early enough to abort the 'split-S' for a snapshot as they zoom up or something.

If it was clean 1 v. 1 there's nothing that will save you from a higher and faster plane indefinetly. Luckily the arenas are hardly clean 1 v. 1, so IMHO the best you can do is to deny good shot from the enemy long enough to get help from friendly planes or AAA.

Jugs are alot of fun low and slow if its you and anything but a niki or a spit. Everybody underestimates them. I kill more planes in a Jug when they catch me low and slow than any other plane. They think they have an easy kill but the jug handles very well at just above stall speed with a notch sometimes two of flaps and plenty of wepp. All you have to do is force the overshoot. If he doesnt have to much smash you can usually get a good shot for a second or two from those 8 50's. They rip a plane to pieces in seconds if you get all 8 on em. Use rolling scissors to make em miss or if you still have some smash I like to draw them in by keeping my speed high but going into a shollow right or left hand turn. If you use the turn right you give the appearance of being very slow. He's watching the distance icon shrink fast but you still have plenty of speed. Right when he's about to open up, you have several options as you still fast. One barrel roll, a hard pull back on the stick, a scissiors, any and all will work to make him miss the shot. Then its your turn and you had better not miss. At least knock something off of him so he's flying more like a Jug (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
