Title: Spit14 climbrate
Post by: AKcurly on May 03, 2002, 04:57:39 AM
Earlier this week, I saw a reference on this BBS claiming the Spit14 would outclimb the 109G10.

It's not even close.  The G10 blows the Spit14 away.

Time
to:            Spit 14         G10
5k              1:32            1:24
10k             2:37           2:29
15k             3:50           3:41
20k             5:19           4:59
25k             7:19           6:31

50% fuel, wep and times by "West Bend". :)

Now, if I just learn to effectively use a tater gun. :)

So, using your numbers, exactly what does this tell us about who outclimbs who in the 10k-15k area?

If I have read them correct, the Spit and the G10 are basically identical in that area. (G10 is 1 second faster to 15k)

Correct?

Yes, in the 10-15k range, very close.  However, so far as that goes, the Spit9 is very close to the G10 in the 10-15k range.

How did you do this test? alt+x and a stopwatch?

If yes,
Would there be different results if you zoom-climbed, then went level to pick up speed and then zoom-climb again?

The problem with alt+x is that this provides for nowhere near max climb rate. For the Spitfire, max climb would likely be at a speed closer to 160 mph, than 200. Moreover, the climb angle would naturally be greater as well.

The facts are, from sea level to 10k, the Spit XIV outclimbs the G-10, above that the 109 has the advantage, albeit by no great margin. As it is, if a G-10 tangles with a Spit XIV, climbing won't be an issue, surviving is the issue.

Zoom climbs will gain no more altitude than steady state at optimal speed and angle.

My regards,

Widewing, AutoClimb is preset at maxclimb speed for each aircraft at sea level. Yes it varies as you climb, but not by much.
