the article is about digital recorders not televisions. It's a tivo type appliance. My tivo has to dial into a database to update its tv guide info. It does this every so often, couple of days. As I don't know exactly what is passing back and forth when it is connected, it could easily be sending my viewing habits to whoever. Seems like good marketing to me...

Digital recording is a part of the digital tv package offered here..
That aside, the two-way digital nature of the new technology supports monitoring like this. D-tv offers a broadband internet connection etc.
If this is used as a predecision case, I'll keep far away from digital medias. What they plan to do is a huge invasion of privacy.
Although I think this could never happen in my country since we have a law to protect a persons privacy in the electronic media.. Collecting personal information like this would be a direct violation of the law.
