Title: WB3 release
Post by: kiljoy on February 06, 2001, 02:57:00 PM
Has WB3 been released and I didn't hear about it.  I've just not been paying much attention and dropped my WB links.

What happened to WBs?  I see more an more pilots in AH all the time.

Not one word about WB3 being released on AGW.
If its out, I would expect a bunch of chatter.

Where did you hear its out?

"WHAT IS FIXED IN WARBIRDS 2.76r4:
Disabled alt-tab during flight"

Ack!!!  That would suck.  Are they disabling people from doing other things on their PC while playing?

Many people use the Alt-Tab in flight to shake a contact on their six.  If someone is about to gun you down, hit Alt-Tab and you minimize to desktop, and you stop sending packets to the server.  To your opponent your plane would appear to either stop in mid air or blink out.  After you minimize you maximise again, and if you timed it right you will be in gun range on the con that was about to fire on you.

I call it the 6/12 cheat, but I am sure there are other names for it.  Wouldn't be necessary if people didn't cheat to win.

They aren't really winning, they just aren't losing, but they are still losers.

The solution is obvious.

Instead of disabling alt-tab, treat it like "don't-move-your-controls-so-fast" the controls are frozen for about 5 secs after tabing back in.

If you're alt-tabing while climbing out on autopilot on a long mission to check your email no drama.  Its no harm if you control input is frozen while on autopilot.  If you try it in a dogfight you're prolly toast cause you have  to fly nice and straight for 5 seconds.

Of course if I wan't checking my emails on those long flights, I wouldn't get bounced so much.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Just to clarify that this alt-tab cheat only works in WB.  Alt tabbing in Aces High doesn't have this kind of an effect, afaik.

Long flights would be quite boring without all the inflight entertainment alt-tabbing provides.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Word. In fact, probly the main reason why I stopped flying WB was becaase a bug corrupted my video memory when I alt-tabbed around.  I'm frequently on the desktop, doing work, reading the UBBs, sending emails, and the like; I'm perfectly willing to accept the increased casualty rate from augers and bounces; but it would really suck to lose the ability to do something else with my computer.

Worse than alt-tab was the WB feature that let you use ctrl-alt-del which completely halted all network activity without dumping your connect.  The WB host uses a 60 second timeout, so you just start counting when you hit ctrl-alt-del and then hit ESC before 60 seconds.  On everyone elses FE, you just poofed out for up to 60 seconds, reappearing around where you disappeared.

I don't know if they ever disabled that one, but it sure as hell was commonly used a while ago, almost as bad as the wussies in AH now who alt-f4 and poof out as soon as they're at a disadvantage.  IMHO the FE should detect if the alt key was pressed at the time of the disco.  If it was, there should be a severe point penalty the next time they log back in, since the only reason to do that is to prevent the points loss and deny someone else a kill they deserve.

eagl Alt+F4 is scored as a crash.  I believe anyone who pops Alt+F4 in effort to try and save thier perk ride/points are in for a surprise  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Also, ALT-F4'ing within a certain range (I believe its D3.0) will register a kill for the closest fighter to the guy that exits, without having a single hit on him.
