Title: Best looking fighter of World War II
Post by: fdiron on May 05, 2002, 09:20:13 PM
What do you think was the best looking fighter of World War II?

My vote goes to the P51-D Mustang.  Long nose, straight lines, bubble canopy, and silver color make this plane awesome looking.  I would also say that the P51 is the most modern looking prop plane of WW2.

The Spitfires wings look too much like banannas, the P47 is too fat, and the Zero looks too '1930ish'.

Bf109G2: Most elegant!

Bf109G6: Best looking!

FW190A5: Damn good too!

:)

P51D is kinda OK, very clean and modern,  but it is really lacking in character....

P-38 and P-61 best looking. Its obvious they're related =)

P-51 looks like a worn dildo.
Spit is like a flying banana (squished)
The zero looks like a tonka truck
P-40 looks mean.. and that means its butt uggly.
109's are a P-40 wannabe
190's... used tampons.
110's are fokker eindecker groupies
lavs' and yaks mimic the dung beetles on my back yard.

;) :D

Come on, the P38 only looks good by itself.  When you compare the P38 to another plane, it looks to stubby and rounded (when viewed from the side).  When viewed from the top, it looks like a box.

like the stopwith camel is a prehistoric prop fighter.

it's just that it got two ugly engine gondolas attached to it's wing.
for a jet that's ugly. :)

Wouldn't mind one in AH though.

I guess since it wasn't mass produced for combat it doesn't count, but my favorite was probably the He-100.

I saw a black one in Florida back in early 1983 at the TICO show. We arrived at the show pretty early and apparently this guy was just arriving.  We just happened to be on the airport perimeter road at the end of a runway when this speck appeared in the distance to my left - coming straight at us at about 450+. Flew right over the car no more than 15 to 20 feet agl, low pass down the runway, then zoomed straight up till it was just a spec again.  That fly-by is etched firmly in my memory.

Saw the same black P51 in St. Pete at Albert Whitted airport a couple days later.  It was the only black one I had ever seen - will never forget it  :)

I don't know if its still in existence.

Met the author Martin Caidin that day also. My friend Steve Gentle taught him to fly at Katama Airfield, where I collected landing fees and pumped gas for four years.

Show anyone a picture of a WW2 plane and you will shown something of beauty in it. They may not all have the best of all to make it great but everything about the planes of that era is what make them all beautiful.

Better yet show those same pictures to a small child (preferably a little boy) and you will see probably the best sight you will ever see. The eyes will just light up like my son's did here in this thread and seeing all the great planes pictures posted here.

Wouldn't have thought so, but after an airshow where I watched P-51's, a Spit or two, TBM, P-39, P-47, Corsair, (previously saw a 38) and those Tora Tora mock-ups of Japanese aircraft, the F4 really stuck out as the purdiest (in flight anyway).

I believe that a plane should look like what it is intended to do. The P-51 is a beautiful aircraft and looks great at an air race. But a plane made for war should look like it. Therefore here are my selections.

Fighter - P-47 Thunderbolt. Big, powerful, ugly and mean.

Bomber - B-24 Liberator for all of the same reasons.

Dive Bomber - JU-87 Stuka do I need to say it??

Thanks, thought that one would go under the radar lol.

I agree that the 190a is far and away better looking than the Dora, or Ta-152. In fact, as far as operational planes go, I'd say the 190a or the F4-U. Both just "look the part" to me. And they look mean, like a fighter should, not "pretty" like the spitfire.

the spitfire is undoubtedly the most 'beautiful' world war 2 fighter.

the thing is all other fighters were designed for fighting only, the supermarine was very much designed to look perfect.
The design was universally recognised as 'beautiful' even by enemy and friendly pilots alike.
add to that the superb handling...and i quote 'you dont fly the spitfire, you strap it on!'

also in a recent book 'combat crews' by john comer he says it was the most elegant looking fighter and deadly in combat.

my personal favourite of WW2 is without a shadow of a doubt the 190 due to the fact it looks like a hunter. It has that 'about to fire' posture and is also among the best of the war.

the p51 just looks like a lumpy mass with odd parts sticking out.
the best part of it in my opinion is the guns in the wings.the rest is fairly ugly as a design for looks. In fact its as plain as a bulgarian pin up :D

The P38 is also a good looking plane because it was so unusual and holds a special place in my childhood in terms of a model i always picked off the shelf.
but to say its the best looking? hmmm

The stang is a mass prouced cheap thingy,
when u compare it to the P38 it looks like the lightning comes from the skunkworks.

P38 looks just most interesting and it flys like it.

The idea u between two engines with ur nose free for all the guns is just to sexy to be.

The P38 is definitly no wanna be mustang
coz the P38 can do more
at least it's got some pay load .

Title: Best looking fighter of World War II
Post by: Karnak on May 12, 2002, 01:39:40 AM
Besides the Spit, I also like these:

A6M5 Zero-Sen.  This is just such a proportional aircraft with such elegant lines.  It is the only radial engined aircraft that I can say that about.  I also understand that the A6M is a pilots aircraft, no vices at all.  It has weaknesses as a warplane (to put it lightly), but from just a flying stand point and a beauty stand point, Horikoshi did a superlative job.

Fw190A Series.  These fighters just look like fighters.  Stocky, aggressive and to the point.  Tank did a great job on this aircraft, it looks like it should.  Where the Spitfire is the elegant duelist that wins by agility and grace, the Butcher Bird is the brawler who wins by meaness.  I agree with Urchin, the Dora horribly distorts, like a caricature, the nature of the Fw190.

Mosquito FB.VI.  This aircraft is sleek and clean.  Nicely rounded tail and stepped wings create and thoughbred look that makes it look like one would imagine a successful multi-role aircraft would look given the technology of the day.  This was the aircraft used for pinpoint strikes in cities and on parts of buildings in WWII.

here's a challenge
which is the best looking FRENCH plane?

here's a challenge

That's fair question, if you limit the WWII plane choices from all other Countries to pre- June 1940 planes. France did not produce many fighter planes while it was occupied.

Judging by BenDover's 2 replies and signature, I judge him to be a complainer.... but hey, that's just me.

Best looking plane: P-51

The P51 was the most modern looking fighter of World War II.  It did not have curved lines like the antiquated Spitfire, nor was it bulbous and fat like radial engine aircraft.

The most beautiful WW2 fighter is the Hurricane, followed closely by the Spitfire with a deserving 3rd for the P40.
I don't like the Mustang at all,how it looks or how it handles :p
