Title: I need a Japanese Translator !!!
Post by: BOOT on May 05, 2002, 10:46:07 PM
While browsing at my favorite local Military Antiques Dealer here in Springfield MO.  I came across what is at least to me, a very good find..

I purchased a bag of wartime memento's Most are dated
1944 - 45... These were items that belonged to a B-29 Squadron Commander... Based out of Tinian.

Among many pictures of bombing raids (shot from the B-29's)
There was  a plotting chart of a mission on the Japanese mainland, with notes made during the mission...  Including a location where one B-29 ditched on it's return.  Very neat stuff...

But there is also a Japanese Pilots Logbook.

You can imagine what all has run through my mind since I came across this find...  Fighter ?  Bomber ? Its probably a backlines transport... But Hey, I could be lucky  :)

Mitsu ?  or anybody?  Could you handle this task ?
I can scan the first couple of pages and if it looks promising then it could be launched into a full reading...

Thanks

You will definately need to expand the jepg image...
I apologize in advance for the poor quality...  But this document is on brown paper and entries are all in pencil.

The title of this table can read as "denshin ?(1 kanji, probably "tou"?) toushin kiroku (kou) ",
"Radio comminucation record, class #1"
This can be wrong, because I cant read clear...
more a bit read-able picture is needed;)

What ???  You can't read "Smudge".... LOL

I will post some better scans tonite or tomorrow...  I am working from copies that my wife made at school, and she copied them too dark...  I don't want to disassemble the book...  Oh and I also found some rice paper in the book that looks like it is a letter...

Thanks for even the little bit of translation MOMOYAMA...

Does this mean it  looks like it is a radio logbook and not a Flight Log ?

Thanks Again...  I apologize to everybody for the poor scans... I will get it right... Just need to read the instructions... :)

Ok Gents I think I have it now...   Here is a good scan of the first page...

I have tried this in various formats and the best quality was produced by Adobe Acrobat...   You will need the reader to view this file... most systems have the reader...  The file is a .pdf file format...  Go to the link below to view it in Adobe Acrobat ...

http://members.inter-linc.net/BOOT/images/logbook

For those that don't have Adobe Acrobat I have attached a .gif file... I don't think the quality is as good... But still better than what I scanned before...

TRANSLATORS:   Please let us know if this logbook is anything we want to continue with... Let me know which format to post and I will scan and post the entire book...

Thanks for your patience guys...

Boot,

sorry, Japanese characters require higher resolution when scanning.  Please try 600dpi.  I can read some parts but it is really difficult to make out the hand written parts.

Pretty interesting aside to this. I joined the Navy out of High School, I went into Avionics and by pure luck landed as an Aircrewman on P3 orions.  I had been in for 3 years when on a trip home my grandma gave me a box of stuff.  My grandpa died when my mom was 8 in a B-52 crash in oregon, he was a radio operator for boeing I believe.

In the box was a bunch of stuff from the WWII when he served in the Navy.

I was not aware that he was in the service at all, in fact I knew very little of him.

In the box were his Combat Aircrew wings, they were silver with a gold CAC over the wings.  He was a radio operator on PBY's, almost a direct crossover Rate to what I was on P-3's  His wings were essentially the same I had been issued 2 years before.

Also in the book was a flight log, there were not many enteries at all, he was not diligent in keeping things up to date, but one entry blew me away.

He related a story of being bounced by an nme fighter and that their PBY took extensive damage in the mulitple passes made.

He named crew member names, I cant remember them now but the entry went something to the effect of

"Johnson didn't make it through the flight, he was hit twice in the chest, Fred had his head phones shot off of his head and when I landed I found that I had eleven bullet holes in my flight suit!"

I wish I had it down here with me I would scan the entry and post it.  Some amazing reading.

Fester

That is an awsome discovery...  There is so much of the story of WW2 that is still hidden away in some remote corner of peoples attics...  It is strange, but most of the veterans I have worked with don't even realise themselves that they were heroes.
They just looked at it like thats what they had to do and they did it...  God I love em !!!

Ok... here goes... I translated the first line and the items for the columns for this table so it will be clear what we are talking about...

Title: Communications Department Duty Log

Month-Day,Day of the week, Weather: October 31, Tuesday, Fine

Time on Duty: 0620-0845

Frequency on Reception (from the kanji characters, I think this is what it means):  6705

Telegrams - Sending: 310602, 310725 (vessels?? not sure)
Telegrams - Receiving: 310602

Status of Transmission - Person on the Other side: (I donno what this means, probably a name of some sort, it says "Ou cg, Tou cg, Hokuryu, Sendan", probably a vessel or convoy??)

Status of Transmission - summary:
and
Memo:
and
Notes:
(These three columns are used as one, probably not clear on how to use it :D, I can't tell the practical difference either..)
for Ou cg: 3/
for Tou cg: 5/5  waited as much as possible, xxx (two kanji characters illegible...) no sensitivity

for Hokuryu: 47 (two kanji characters illegible...) 5/5

for vessels: Vessel or convoy called on as much as possible, no response 0839  xxx (two kanji characters illegible...)

(then there is about 5 or 6 characters which I cannot comprehend the meaning of the memo... it says: 1/3KEG (three kanji characters illegible...) 5/5

Name of Officer on duty:
Name of Non commissioned officer on duty:

well that's it...

Looks like a log book from a radio station to me...

I have posted the scan of the rice paper Letter...

Lets hope this tells of some exciting adventure...

This is one page of three...  of course I have no idea if it is the first page or not...  I am really interested in what this has to say...

I apologize for the quality of this scan... But the paper is in really bad shape...  This scan is the best I can generate...

Translators, please make out what you can...

Boot,

It looks like a personal letter from the person's family or relative.  The first few lines are thanking the person for sending some sort of document and assuring that everyone including the writer is doing well.  The second paragraph is a response to an invitation to get everyone to the south pacific (whereever that is).  It says that the father and the mother will not listen to such requests using their age as an excuse.  Then the writers tries to convince the reader to return to Okinawa siting his age (45) as a reason to come back... the last few lines were illegible...

that's it... I could only scan it thorough but I think this is what it says...
