Please email me if you are going to give this a fair shake, and I will take a few hours to spend some 1 on 1 time with you. ACM rules the day in AH just like it does in WB. The big difference is timing. Timing is everything, and the biggest hurdle you will have to overcome. Where you could safely outmaneuver a plane you just spotted D5 on your 6 in WB, in AH you need to make the same move sooner. Which leads to another hurdle, SA. These 2 things are needed to be successful in air combat in any sim, period. They are the first things to go when you switch sims.
You can not expect to be ruling the skies in 2 weeks. This sim isn't new anymore and after 3 years we have some sticks.
The competition here is a melting pot of aces. One reason I left WBs was the chance to dogfight some of the aces from the other sims, AW, FA, EAW, etc. There are a lot of very good pilots here. I would love to see some of you come give AH a whirl once educated. :) Anything I can do to help, please let me know.
Email me, I can give you a huge head start with just a few hours.

But wait a minute....doesnt everyone around here say that Drex sux?!?!
:D

One thing I remember when I switch to Aces High was the range counter was done in a different way. I think not understanding the difference is where a lot of the claims of laser gunnery come from.

Wha? You talking plane skills or something else? :D
-
You should listen to Drex. He is making you a very generous offer.
It would be a waste of time to try and teach this 'old dog' anything new, but you have a chance to learn from a 'Master of the Game' ;)
-
If there is one thing I HAVE learned, is that the lag here IS quite alot different.
Just how different, I've yet to discover ;)
I'm being shredded when I break or barrel roll on a hard six bounce. Split-ess bounce commin in hot, go for the pullup to force the overshoot, and I'm hitting silk.
I ask whoever killed me whether they saw the break...trying to get a feel..not there yet.
I have a habit when seeing a high con, just to sit tight get fast, and wait for the bounce, then act accordingly. Sort of a 109F vs. Pony tactic, evade and act on what your givin.
Acting accordingly is hitting the chute :D
D10-11 was a break point over there on a hard bounce. Or D1.0-1.1 here...
Broke early in a quick barrel roll, no dice, he chopped throttle, sat on my six...
Can we talk shredded ???
:)

If there is one thing I HAVE learned, is that the lag here IS quite alot different.
That isn't the reason you are getting shredded. My question to you is are you still realitively on the same flight path when you go into your roll, or are you breaking nose low first waiting until they commit to a shot with lead pursuit then rolling?
My guess is that you are missing their E state (judging closure takes some time in here). The slower the closure the more angles you will need to create a miss and a reversal.(longer break turn then a longer roll). The faster he is closing the less degree of break turn you will need before you roll(quicker roll and keeping him pretty much on your original flight path)
This can be overcome rather quickly. I know the perfect drill. :)
When is a good time for you to hook up with me?
Drex
-
...yeah, but what if we are long standing AH'ers.
Are you gonna help us out?
F.

the other thing that drex is missing out is his ability to accurately put 100% of your .50s on an insanely far away target at an impossible angle every single time without ever thinking twice about it.
I wish he could teach me how to do that.
-
Yeah, what about us who have been here a couple of years...I sure could use that head start! :D
SOB
-
Furious, you bet.
preon1, I have one of the worst gunnery percentage in the game. Usually around 5-8%, but hit percentage is a false indicator of gunnery (What?). The small window that you have to put the bullets in the plane is where I have a high percentage. :)
Drex

If there is one thing I HAVE learned, is that the lag here IS quite alot different
Personally I don't seem to suffer from lag but I know there are players who have had bad connects. You might have missed what's been going on connection wise, basically Skuzzy who runs the ISP that HTC are hosted on is having new nice fat pipes run to his provider, he still hosts the CT andduelling arena's etc but as a temporary measure the MA is hosted by another company. Hopefully the MA will once again be hosted by Skuzzy very soon and we will all go back to the good connects we once had.
-
Revvin, and others,..I think there would still be a problem for many players in Europe right now, even if the MA was here.
There is a very serious routing problem in Europe right now. I am pulling together all the information I can to try to determine where and why it is happening.
I do know that Telekom in Germany has a route problem with the 217.x.x.x Class A IP block, which is appearing in many player traces. I do not know what the time frame for that to get fixed is, as it is certainly in thier hands. All I can tell those players are; please let your local ISP know there is a problem. I posted a trace that shows the exact problem. Hopefully that will help them get the problem corrected.
HTC cannot fix this problem. It is going to take both ends of the connection to get this one fixed. I can send data from this side of the pond, while the guys overseas can send it from thier side. This will give a complete picture to the ISP over there and that is where the repairs need to start.
What I am concerned about are local players, which suddenly seem to be effected. It is almost virus like in the spreading of the problems. It does not appear to be congestion related, but routing related.
And while I have seem my fair share of routing problems. I have never seen this many of them so close together. Something else is going on and I am going to find out what it is.

Hiya Dr Drex! First time question poster, long time lurker!! I enjoy your posts and advice very much :)
Well. My problem is that I'm already pretty damned good, if I can say so myself as I gots a wicked lot of points, however what I need is some serious dating advice.
See? My problem is that I really want to date red heads, cause they're hot (uh, no freckles puh_lease), yet it's the blondes who really make my knees go all jello wiggley like.
Any ideas on how to choose one from the other?
Oh. And whenever I let on during a conversation that I fly bombers? They stop talking to me...

Leviathn,
Yea, that is one of those rank things, isn't?
Any ideas on how to choose one from the other?
Rob,
My advice would be to keep your hands-a-rubbin' just like your doing. Nah, hold on...Dress your left hand with some yellow yarn for hair, take some coloring pens, and make her face on your palm. Then do the right hand with red yarn. Now go back to hands-a-rubbin, and just move it down slightly below your waist.
Best of both worlds. next?

Wulfie, no one puts a bandit on a silver spoon like you do.
Your probably the most deadeye with the pipper I've seen.
And quite frankly, I believe the more vodka you drank the more sober you got. Hell your JG14, your a freak. They don't want you in AH.

Very good post DREX, WTG!
-
Damnit you are supposed to play along. :)
Something like "Wulfie the key is this if you are being chased by 30 enemy and a friendly tells you to drag then immediately split-s towards the friendly and begin turning in as tight a circle as possible."
===
Remember the night at GJs house where we were all drinking, and seeing how good a streak the 3 of us could put together taking turns in the WB MA in the P-39D?
And how the more you and I drank the better we were getting and GJ kept getting toasted for some unknown reason?
He was looking at you and my like the state trooper was looking at Venus Flytrap and Johnny Fever in that WKRP episode where they were taking the 'driving reaction time effects of drinking alcohol' test. :)
I keep having to cancel my damn AH account because every few weeks I have to split to another place for an unknown period of time for work. When I get home I'll get a permanent account for at least 6 months I think.
I'll email you when I get access to a computer (again) that can run AH and a decent joystick.
Mike/wulfie
p.s. RC - redheads rock. :)

Drex,
I have sent you a private email, and would like to take you up on this offer.
I've been back in AH for a few months now (tried it in 1999 but didn't like it then) and I would give the following tips to former WB pilots. Would you agree with my list? - Do not rely on 190s not being able to turn. In AH, they can turn much better than in WB. So if you've got one behind you, it's bad news.
- Be aware of the enormous E retention of some of the 109s. I think it's the G10 that's the really dangerous one. I don't fly them much because I like being able to adjust my aim at and above 400mph.
- Be careful around Spits and LA7s. The LA7 can be dealt with in a B&Z, otherwise best left alone!
- Understand the N1K, the people who fly it, why they fly it, and then treat them with the contempt they deserve :D
- The effective range of AH weaponry is much greater than in WB, and kills can be had at 1000 yards even when firing upwards. Hitech once got me firing vertically upwards at 600+ yards!
- Lots of new players here, so don't expect 6-calls as you would in WB. But that seems to be changing :)
- For the same reason, in a merge, MOST pilots you encounter will try for the HO, and MANY will then flat turn behind you as you go vertical - lunch time! :D
- Try to understand the radar. In some circumstances, it shows friends but does NOT show the presence of enemies! Still trying to figure that out. Could understand if it showed neither, or both...
- Finally, do not despair if you see something that's not quite right in AH. Bring it to the attention of HTC. The quality of programming effort, maintenance and customer care is FAR in excess of what you are used to. You wont get the Royal brush-off in here.
-

Sorry if I step in beet1e, but:
a) FW190s in AH dont turn well, they *seem* to turn well when they have the right speed, enuff speed that is. Engage a 190A5 in a dogfight at 350-400mph+ TAS and he will remain on your tail; I like it, it is what I have read in many reports.
b) Bf109Gs dont have a good E-retention in AH; however they have a very good sustained climb rate. Take the 109G-10, for example. When you see a G-10 climb-turning above you its not due only to its E-retention rather to its incredible pure climb performance.
Only my two €. Regards.

poopie... believe what you want about AH but I will tell you that getting behind drex from a superior e state and with a superior AC is nothing more than the first step in getting yourself shot down. I do not believe that anyone who tries it will ever get spout off about there being no "fight" or acm to AH again.
While he is the best at this he is by no means the only one in AH who can do this. With practice, so can a lot more.

there are 2 types of dar local (base radar dish) and global (HQ radar dish arrays).
by killing local base radar dish, all local dots go poofy for that sides planes in the area - if you still have your HQ up 100%, you'll still see all dar bars and friendly dots in the sector, unless local radar loss also loses freindly dots.
by attacking HQ, depending on the severity of the damage done you will progessively lose global radar functions - enemy dots first, followed by friendly dots, followed by enemy dar bar followed by friendly darbar (at which point your dar is totally blind globally).

I say QUAH! to Warbirds!!!!

I'm keeping my accounts active in WB, AH, and WW-2onLine to help fund development and competition in all of these sims, but mostly to have fun.
AH has a much more complete strategy in their sim , plus steerable CVs and lots of other ground and water vehicles with user-controlled guns, ranging from 8" to 50-cal. There is definitely some fun and satisfaction in learning how to fire an 8" gun that can destroy other moving ships and bases that are more than 5 miles away.
I have seen some criticism about the AH cockpits because of their non-historical look and layout, but I love their cockpits because all the important instruments are VISIBLE, READABLE, and you can set up your head-position any way you want, to come closer to real-life instrument and outside visibility. This is an all-important feature that makes all of the aircraft in AH more flyable in ACM. WB-2 aircraft had good cockpit intstumentation also, but I consider WB-3 instrument placement and outside visibility to be a step backwards.
I was somewhat annoyed by the AH map clipboard untill I learned how to properly configure and use it. I also love being able to configure keyboard and stick settings while in flight.
Their flight-recorder is an incredible tool for reflying a mission and learning from ones mistakes.
The Aces High kill-buffer does not say who-killed-who, and I miss the humor, elation, humiliation, and competition that this feature promotes in WarBirds. Even though AH player statistics are superior to what WB-3 offers, I really miss being able to call up the statistics of my last sortie in AH
The AH flight-modeling is much closer to real life aircraft that I have flown: very similar to the T-37, which has WW-2 performance, and direct-manual flight controls. The ME-262 reminds me of an underpowered B-737. AH power-off glide and landing characteristics seem much more realistic than WB flight modeling. Neither flight models seem totally accurate because no matter what I try, I can't get any of these aircraft into a prolonged inverted spin.
At this point, I believe that Aces High offers more features, and has more forward momentem and regular improvements than any other online flight-sim.
-
Borg, I agree 100%.
What real life types have you flown? I have flown only single engined piston engined types up to 235hp (that one was a C182 RG Skylane). And many would be quick to point out that I'm therefore not qualified to pass judgement on sim flight models. But what I can say is that the AH flight models are much closer to what I would expect than those of the dark side. The first thing I noticed was that AH attempts to model constant speed props; WB is very arcadish in that regard. I've attached an earlier posting about constant speed props. iEN never responded to my suggestion - all very typical

Cooley - I did as you did, about a year ago now. I couldn't get WB3 to work properly either, whereas AH was working within 20 minutes of download. You'd think the WB guys would learn something from that, but no. They still think that theirs is the greatest sim, so great that it's worth spending weeks/months twiddling all the various settings to make it work. As I said at the time, what chance is there of attracting new players to WB, when they can download AH (¼ of the size), and have a better game with good connections and proper customer support within minutes.

Turbot, I haven't updated that map section for over a year. Only the headpositions and fuel charts is still updated when needed.
Since I returned to AH in July I don't think I have ever been killed by a just ONE hit of ai ack, even tho my maps state that there still are some of them being 37mm.
So either they were replaced by the quad 20's (but not graphically, since they still show as 37mm when looking closely), or they just can't hit for ....
Other than that the maps should still be valid, but I think Cooley was more looking for maps over factories ect. which I haven't done. I know someone have however.

we've already had a 9" and 6" snow up top :)
it's looking like this winter may break the 'spell' !! whoooT
as for the Platte.. I used to fish deckers all the time.. it made me a much better fisherman !
Maybe we should have a mini-con / fish-off next spring ?
I'm in!
I fish the Platte just downstream of Spinney. Called the Miracle Mile or something, but with all the guided trips the Miracle is that anyone catches anything.
Perhaps we can do a Caddis hatch mini-con...May-ish.
Snowing here, too--hope we get a ton!

Horn, just got another 3 inches last night.. whoooo hoooo
Miracle mile.. you are on.. my buddy and I try and hit it every spring.. last year I caught a 12 pound brown..
gotta love it.
around here it's usually the 12-24 inch fish but they are the fiestiest (sp) fish I've ever hooked. At times an 18 incher will feel like a 10 pounder..
still fishing here but only between storms :)
I'm about to put away the fly rod and break out the boards !
Definately plan on coming up to ski.. I can probably finagle a discount or something on the lift ticket and you can stay overnight at my place so no lodging expense.
*edit*
in fact, we should try and time this so a few AH'ers can make it at the same time (I.E. Drex, Toad, etc)

Sounds like a plan and thanks for the offer.
Have you ever fished the outflow of the Taylor river? 7x tippets, #20-22 Misces (sp) shrimp, 20 lb PhD. fishes. A blast, tho.

I moved this topic to OT :)
figured we'd hijacked this thing long enough...

Drex,
I quit WB due to total lack of progress, but the 2 times I did try AH I didnt like it because of the late war centric planeset and the non-historical gameplay.
However, it seems with the new development currently in progress for the historical mission based arena, AH may be heading toward exactly what I have always wanted. So, im preparation for the new arena I am thinking of giving AH another go.
Once upon a time I could hang with you in FW's... but once upon a time I also could stay up till 4am drinking scotch and talking sh*t in Grapevine too!
How about some help getting back up to speed and figuring this thing out?

Good to see you Fang.
Shoot me an email at bkdrex@icqmail.com
I'm rusty myself. Have flown around 56 hours in the last 6 months, but I think we can find a time to hook up. Your brother or any of JG26 coming over?

email otw. My brother hasnt played WB in years, he is flying a ton in real for Delta now.... copilot on 767's last I heard. I would like to get him back into it.
As for the rest of JG26, they are going strong in WB and kickin buttin the S3's. The S3's were the only thing keeping me in WB, but Im hoping the new mission arena will be something like a permanent S3. I think if AH pulls it off, it could lure others away from WB.

Fangio> It's a common misconception that no other sim can hold events the way Warbirds can..well sorry to burst the bubble for those people that believe that but AH events are easily the equal if not improved on what Warbirds can offer and I've flown plenty of WB events in the years I played there. The last event 'Battle of Britain' was simply outstanding, the organisation before during and after was top notch. Registration was done as fairly as possible and it was unfortunate that not everyone could get a place such was the demand. As a squadron leader in the event I received plenty of correspondance from my sector controllers and very good direction during the event. When all was done the results were on hand and laid out extremely well for everyone to get a blow by blow run down on their performance. The S3 events in WB have their equal in AH with the TOD series which runs twice a week with US and importantly Euro friendly times too with other events such as the Snapshot's and the new CAP event on Saturday's complimenting the large scale events such as the BoB event just gone and the Midway event organised for November.
The great organisation, the built in comms and good turnout's make for some great events. That's not to say Warbirds does'nt run good events because they still do but many use this excuse of AH events somehow being inferior as an excuse not to try AH and that's unfair on the AH CM's who do a damned good job.

Drex I'll meet you any where any time under the following conditions.
1. You get a C-47
2. I get 3 tries in the fighter or fighters of my choice.
Hope I didn't leave myself exposed, I just don't feel safe for some reason. I still have a very uneasy feeling about this and think I gave him to much of an advantage.

Only if I can fly in one of your cockpits. Truely awesome stuff.
