Title: Lil about HO's
Post by: MOTJD on May 09, 2002, 10:49:47 AM
From a text i read about the B-17 Bomber---

"There were several versions of the B-17. This one, the B-17G, is the latest and is most distinguishable because of the front, twin 50-cal. gun turret.
It was added to combat the deadly (and also most dangerous) tactic of head-on attack by the Me109s and other Luftwaffe fighters. "

SO relax, shoot straight and let the parts fall where they may.

Unfortunately, HO attacks still continued on B17s.  The Top turret could not fire level on the B17 and only the nose turret could be brought to bear.

I don't think I've ever heard a B-17 driver complain about HOs in the game. I'm really lost on the point of this as well.

The worst thing in AH you can do is attack a B17 from level dead 6, the 2nd worst thing you can do is attack level Head on! Trust me! (Each direction you'll have 6X50's trained on you, and HO just means alittle less time exposed to them.)

Right, that's what I'm saying. It seems like this post would be a counter to a B-17 guy whining about HOs, and the poster trying to show that HO's are a valid tactic.

Speaking of which, in the Baltic terrain a while ago I was merrily flying along in my B17 when I saw another B17 co-alt at D5.  HOing dweeb went straight at me.

Of course I parked my butt in that Bendix nose turrett and shot the weenie down, but it was the principle of going HO in a pair of B17s.

The REALLY annoying part was I got credit for the kill in the text buffer, but not in my score.

In another sim there was once an Arena called "Air Galleons" where gunned B-17s could duke it out. That was some pretty funny stuff.

I'm sorry, the worst attack you can make on a B-26 is what I did last night...

I upped in a G-10 with 75% fuel, external tank, gondolas and a 30mm with the express intent of buff hunting.  After getting up to 15k or so I spotted a B-26 and after a couple minutes worked my way to co-alt and about 2k off his 9.  My intent was to burn a little speed gaining a bit of altitude and then make a downward slash across him counting on the 30mm to work its magic.  If I miss timed it I would simply continue the arc down to extend and then give it another try.

As I began the slash I noticed that a friendly I had spotted earlier was closing on the 26's 6.  About that time the 26 started firing at the friendly.  "Oh Ho!" thinks I, "He's not looking at me!" and turn the slash into a roll out just behind the 26.  As the sight crosses wing of 26 I fire both cannons and mg and see about three hit sprites on the wing and then ... nothing.   "What the frick," I think, "I got a 30mm?!?!  How can this be?!?!"

About this time the 26 starts to ping me and I quickly roll way.  A moment later the friendly takes the 26's wing off and gets a well earned kill.  Safe I glance and the instruments and think dumbly for a moment, "Hmm, nothing is showing in the ammo counter for my cannon.  That's weir.... OH NO!"

You guessed it, I had the ext tank displayed.  I rolled in behind the bad guy, pinged him with a few 13mm's and then "dropped my tank at him."

HFMudd,

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger on that one. I have made that bone head move more times then I care to admit.

I practice HO's on all the bombers. When I'm Buff Hunting over Rook HQ or another Base being Milk Runned by Hi-Alt Buffs usually in a 190A-8 Or 110G, I manuever for HO kills.

Nothing is more satisfying after a long day at work than hit sprites on a B17's Forward Compartment.

The La5 is another good Buff killer, I found a Lanc at about 7-8k one day and performed 3 Head On passes on with no damage on my La5, The Lanc spun to the ground on fire.

I will admit the 17's Forward fire is pretty intense, but if you if your in an A-8 or G2 youll be able to make it through with limited damage on the first pass. That is if you stay FAST!

No, afraind not Verm. The group I dance with is doing
a three-week tour in the Czech Republic and Italy and
then I'll be spending all of August dancing away the
nights up in Cape Breton again :)

One of these days they'll hold a Con during a "quiet"
time of the year...like October or November, then I'll
 make it :)

No hostility...it's just that the whole HO vs. NO HO thing
 has been "done", ad naseum.

It's a fact that they were used and also that they were
DANGEROUS to the pilot using the tactic.

It's also been reported that they were very LOW PERCENTAGE
shots, especially when used fighter vs fighter. That is something
that I DO NOT find in AH. It is FAR too easy to score a HO kill
in AH with little or no effort or risk.

I can't recall the number of times I've been killed in a B-26
by some weenie coming in headon while I continuosly lit
the sucker up with the forward firing guns on the B-26, but it's
 been far too many.

Or have some weenie drive right through me as he comes
barreling down on the nose of my 26 and I have no chance
to avoid him...and I wind up dying in the resulting collision...
 now THAT SUCKS, IMO...

So, to sum up my stance here...HO's in AH are WAY TOO
FREAKING EASY and need to be toned down...

( And forget the "it takes two to HO" B.S....it ain't so... )
