Don't expect any Euro's, Americans etc to care but.........
My local football team Birmingham City finally (After 4 years of reaching the playoffs and losing on Penalties) finally reached the English premiership after a tense final play off against Norwich City at the Millenium Stadium. Norwich scored 1st but Geoff "Donkey" Horsefield Scored a great late equaliser in Extra time. A Tense Penalty shoot out Saw the Blues through after Norwich missed 2 (One save, One wide of the post). Finally there is a team worse than Blues at Penalties. :D
WTFG Lads, I'm of now for a celebratory Bonk. ;)

ps, Whats the difference between Wolverhampton Wanderers and an Arsonist???
An Arsonist wouldn't lose their last 8 matches..... hehe

Blues?!?! They aint in the playoffs anymore.... the Red Wings beat them last night. :D
-
Don't get too excited snafu - you'll back in division one faster than Barnsley. ;)
Congrats anyway. You poncey brummie types. :D
-
And how many died in the (to be expected) ensuing riot? ;)

Heheh, that's what I was thinking...Blues?? Radek Bonk??
:D

I would have paid to see Jasper Carrotts face on Brum winning promotion! :)

Pah!
My local team used to be Cheltenham Town, I even used to go drinking with the goal keeper. All I can say is, with the speed of our advance up the leagues it wont be long before the lads are up there in the premiership with ya. ;)
We're gonna need a bigger ground though......

Yup, Birmingham City goes up to the big league...along with my "other" team...Manchester City.
(Arsenal is my Premiership "first" team)
Sean Goater, the striker who now holds Man City's scoring records, comes from a great little island situated in the Mid-Atlantic...the name escapes me though...;)

That is almost as bad as confusing a Brit for a Dutchman:p

Didn't Stern John have an assist in that victory for Birmingham City? He used to play for my local team, Columbus.
-
hehe, swoop, you might be thinking of Birmingham's Stern John? He's from T&T. As well as Dwight Yorke.
anyways, Stern John got the winner in the last leg of the semi's to get to the final against Norwich. However, he missed a pretty good chance from reading the post match commentary. I didn't get a chance to catch the replay of the game. Was busy watching our sorry domestic matches (my fantasy team sucked this weekend) and our friendly against Uruguay. :)
Sheesh, I think I'm the only American on this board that admits to watching football. err, soccer. ;)
You Euro guys are lucky. World Cup matches will actually take place during the day for you. I think the US has some group play at 3am my time for the WC!

Mickey, you go to any Crew games? I'm in a Crew Fan division in the fantasy league. Even got up there for the qualifier against Costa Rica back in 2000. Love the stadium! :)
-
Nifty - I don't think you are an American at all. You're an Englishman in disguise.
You do probably come from Pensacola. But it's a small village north of London. :D
-
Nifty, yeah I go to Crew games often. The stadium is really nice and they sell beer. Whereas for the first two years they played at Ohio State University's stadium and of course NO BEER!
The MLS is minus two teams this year but I think that was a good move. I hate to keep losing players like Stern John (league leading scorer) and Brad Friedel (leading keeper) to Europe, but hopefully American Soccer will get better.
I was at the Costa Rica qualifier in 2000 too! That offsides call was crap! Like other American sporting events, you get people there who don't give a toss about the game, they are just there to be seen or be trendy. I remember at the start of the Costa Rica match, one of the two women in front of me said, "Oh my God, that guy hit it with his head!".

Dowding, it's possible. Spitfires are my favorite planes! ;) mmm, Spitfire Mk Ia goodness...
Mickey, sweet! I flew up to Cleveland and a friend picked me up the day of that game. We hung out at his house for a bit, then drove down to the stadium. Disappointed in a 0-0 tie, yet satisfied to see the game, we drove back to his place and crashed. There didn't seem to be many knowledgeable soccer fans near us, but it wasn't -that- bad as what you heard. I think we were upper level on the west side of the stadium. Josh Wolff was the one they called offsides on that one, wasn't it? can't remember who it was, but remember the call. ( Speaking of bad offside calls... we got saved by one yesterday! That Uruguayan was well onside and should have registered his second goal of the match! ) Gotta agree with you on the contraction. The league has a good parity with 10 teams.
I like seeing our MLS guys go on to the bigger leagues and have success. Friedel brought home silverware, Stern John helped gain promotion for his club (which is what this thread was about before we hijacked it! woot!!), and Tony Sanneh does well in the Bundesliga. Won't be long before Mathis is over in Europe too. Donovan will probably go back to Leverkusen after this season (unless he keeps making bad plays like he did yesterday...)
Anyways, congrats to Birmingham, Man City and West Brom!

My God!
A Yank that understands the offside rule??! Can it be true? ;)
You'll be telling me you understand rugby next.....

My uncle played college football (University of Denver) and was recruited to try rugby. He thought it looked fun (wildman) so he gave it a go. I guess the first scrum he decided to lay a block on an opposing player to help his team. This caused a near riot (I think blocking is bad?) and he was asked to leave the game. Rugby looks like semi controlled mayhem to me. The only sport that looks less controlled is Aussie Football. Both are great fun to watch though.
