I will be the dashingly handsome chap wearing a tan baseball type cap with "Tahoe" in the front. I wear glasses and can often be spotted by following the trail of broken hearted women. :D

I wanted to go but ... I just got a CFII job offer at El Monte. They want me there on the week end. For now I still live in Fotana and I drive the 2h every morning for my 8 o'clock flite
Friday I've no idea what is going on, I'll check.

At worst, I'll hang out with Funked/Animal Friday night in Chino.

You know guys, if you want to hook up during the week, I can make you enter for free in the airport and we can see all the museum planes for free because they are parked on the ramp. We can also go check the hangers of others companies, the ones who paint/repair the B25s, ponies, F7F...

Fontana - Original Home of the Hells Angels
Former Steel Town - (Kaiser Steel & Bethlehem too I think, gone now)
Bedroom Suburb today. Has changed drastically since I played hoops against the Fontana Steelers. Used to take your life in your hands going to an away game there, and that was in the 1970's! Not too bad a place today.

Fontana....

I went to School over the hill at UCR, and had friends in Fontana. One thing I remember... Tricked out Horses. Guys just hanging out in their yards/streets with ornately decorated horses, with boom-boxes lashed to them, playing Mexican music. Interesting combination to say the least.

Icemaw and MidnightTarget - I got an email that I think was from one of you guys but I'm not sure which.  We don't really have a meeting place chosen.  I'm just telling guys to call me on my cell when they show up and we will find each other.  Email me funkedup@raf303.org if you want my cell number.

We will be there around 10 am on Saturday.  We are going to be there Fri and Sat nights too.  I'm thinking steaks, vodka, beer, etc.  If you have trouble finding me I'm kind of hard to miss.  6'4", 275 lb, white guy with a buzz cut and a beard and glasses.  I'll probably have my AH hat with my handle on the back.  :)

Frenchy and Animal, email me again pls.

Alot would have to have changed for it to be not too bad a place.

I went to Junior High School there however long ago :)

and the place was absolutely a filthy dustbowl peopled by criminals and streets lined with dead stray animals..trash blowing around, pinned to the chainlink fences.....and a summer that would bake you alive.

but hey maybe they watered since then and planted some nice shade trees :D

============================

I was born in Fontana but smart enough to get out at the age of two and never go back (though I did attend Cal Poly Pomona in the late-80's which smells close enough.)

I'm in San Diego and will try to make the airshow on Saturday.  Since I'm an official Aces High dweeb and I never get out in the sun anymore, I'll be wearing a straw gardener's-type hat to help keep me from burning.

Well funked never answered his phone, but there were lots of warbirds flying today.

From Memory - Fly by's from the following:

FM2 - two of these
Spit 9
Spit 14
Spit 19 (Griffon with contra rotating props)
P51 Mk2 (P51-A)
Kittyhawk
Warhawk
Hurricane (II I think)
TBD  - (One USN Avenger and one English version I forget the name.)
Dauntless
F6F3
F6F5
P-51D - 2 or 3 of these
B-25H (3 at once )
B-17G
F4U-1
A-1 Skyraider
Mig 15
F-86
P-47
Sea Fury
F8F Bearcat
F7F Tigercat
P-38(L?)

A hell of a show, here is a sample:

Midnight; I think Funked was having reception issues with his phone (serves him right for using Sprint :)).

in our group we had

FunkedUp
Mietla
Bumwipe
Icemaw
tbmaw
Animal
Mathman

The show was awesome, my favourite part being the aerobatics display by the Sea Fury; you don't often get to see a an old plane pushed that hard.

The FAA TBF/TBM was called the Tarpon (thought the FAA later started calling them Avengers).

2 of the B-25s were J models and one looked like an earlier version. All three were used in the filming of Pearl Harbour.

The P-38 was a J I think.

The Spit 9 was an LF.
The 19 was a PR.19  with sidemounted camera (the lens at least was still present).
The 14 had a bubble canopy and looked like it had 4 cannon armament though the wings themselves only had breach bulges  for 2.

They opened the ramp up after the show so we got to walk around the a/c.

I don't remember any P-47s there anywhere.  They did have three Grumman biplanes (one a floatplane) flying a display together and they also had that 1/3 scale flying wing aircraft perform.

The F-86 and MiG-15 flight display was way cool.  Those were the hotrods of the day.  The Corsair looked the most graceful to me and the Bearcat as though it had trouble not overspeeding everyone.

I didn't know they'd open the ramp or I would've stayed.  Though, it's still early Sunday and I can go back...nawww.

They flew a P-47G in the show and there was a P-47D-40 on the ramp but it didn't fly (I don't know why but probably a mechanical).

The Grummans biplanes were F3Fs (one was a 2 seat trainer) and the floatplane was a Duck.

Post by: midnight Target on May 19, 2002, 03:13:57 PM
Forgot the Duck. Guy at the gate said it was privately owned and operated by the pilot. I also spoke for a little while with Bud Oxman ('Ox'). He spoke of one Japanese torpedo plane kill he got at Leyte Gulf in his P-38. Somebody asked him about reducing the power to the bottom engine on a turn to decrease turn radius. He laughed and said he kept it to firewall at all times. :)

The P-38 cockpit:

I quickly snuck my camera into the P-38 cockpit section to try to get a pilot's eye view.  I was surprised how high up the gunsight is and how forward from the panel towards the pilot it is.

Just got back, had a great time.

Sorry to Target and any of the others I missed.  I had 5 bars on my cell phone reception but for some reason most of the calls were not getting through.  I kept getting voice mail but not any calls.  :(

Anyways to all the guys who were there, it was great meeting those I could.  Mietla and Bumwipe took a lot of pics and we'll put those up on our website asap.  We also had a little party with Animal and Frenchy on Friday night and we have some pics of that too.

Great show everybody.

Really glad to meet you all in person.

BTW, Animal and I talked for an hour with Jack "Fox" Olson. An awesome fellow. He told us everything about the action pictured on the Stan Olson painting (the one shown on a back of their trailer).

We both got a poster of that combat scene autographed by both Jack "Fox" Olson and Bud "Ox" Oxman.

What a treat.
