Title: Best Advice I ever got for a buff driver
Post by: muckmaw on May 16, 2002, 11:51:37 AM
I've been with AH almost a year now. About 6 months ago, one of the senior Buff drivers gave me the best advice for a buff pilot.

I don't remember who it was, but the next tour, my scores improved and my kills tripled.

So I thought I'd pass it along for all the extreme Newbs flying buffs.

1. Use your rudders to steer while in the gunner position (Don't fly straight and level whenunder attack)

2. Always aim for the wings of the oncoming Bog. Never shoot him through the spinner, no matter how tempting it is.

May sound very basic, but I bet someone driving a new buff does not know this. If I reach 2 Bomber pilot, and he shoots down 1 more Bog from this, it's worth my whiel to post.

If he shoots down Lazs, my life's mission is complete.

(Lazs nailed me 3 times last week. Nice shooting)

Naw, couldn't have been Lazs. He and "most others" head for a more interesting furball when buffs show up.

No, it was old Lazs alright. We have a little running fued here on the board, so when I saw "Lazs Shot you down" on channel 6, it was forever burned into my memory.

Most others I shrug off, but getting shot down by Lazs hurts.

Not true. Its the milk runnin' stratosphere fluffs we don't bother with.

If it isn't too much effort and there isn't anything else to do at the moment, we burn 'em a new stunninghunk.

So, Apache, are you the "most others" Lazs always refers to?  ;)

(chuckle...) Shane, I just tend to defend buffers generally against (apparent) accusations of being mere bus drivers. Some folk seem to think that the only complicated stuff in a WW2 combat flight sim is learning fighter ACMs and deflection shooting, and that flying bombers s trivially easy by comparison.  But that's comparing flying fighters well with flying bombers badly. Get seriously into flying bombers, and you get into checking performance under various loadouts, planning sorties and loadout according to mission profile and distance to be covered, etc.

Both in WB and AH I've had the experience of folk asking me, quite genunely mystified, what there is to buffing other than grabbing a plane with the biggest bomb load possible and more than enough fuel and heading straight for the target decided upon - and then calling me a dweeb because I cant give them an answer that will fit into a couple of lines of text buffer message, and not only that, I'm often actually worse at bombing effectively in the MA than them. (Shrugs...).

Horses for courses, m'dears, each to their own.  I'm into the more realistic kind of situation/flying one gets in scenario games, and the amount of effort flying buffs well in THAT kind of game entails is way too much for the MA, one would get ulcers very rapidly trying to fly that way in the MA.

Anyway, I wasn't slighting your abilities in buffs in particular, Shane, more just digging back at a dig made against buff pilots, implying that we cant fly well :-)

- and continued good luck!
