I am pretty involved in another sim called Orbiter. It's a VERY realistic space ship simulator that you can download as freeware. No combat, just rockets and the Solar System.

The game only comes with four ships, three fantasy ships and the Space Shuttle Atlantis.
However, there are a few people out there that make new ships for the game all the time (at least 2 to 3 a week). The game is exceptionally easy to modify. The instructions are a bit complex at first, but they're given away freely with the game.
These artists often refer to a program that they use called Anim8or (animator if you will). This is also a free download. I just spent all night and last night learing the basics with it and have managed to add my first ship to Orbiter, though untextured. You can see my labor here. It took me about 5 hours to make, more or less (stopped to cooked some dead cow on the backyard grill halfway thru).
So, what do you think for a FIRST model, and do you think anyone here is interested in trying their own had at modeling?

Where's the link to the free 3D CAD program? My students might be able to make use of this...

I should have posted that link I suppose. I just assmumed people would go to Google.com or Yahoo.com and do a search for it if they wanted it too.
But the good news is I think I'm getting better.
