Title: Ever had trouble killing a goon?
Post by: Blue Mako on May 20, 2002, 08:12:52 PM
A certain bish Yak pilot (who will remain unnamed) did last night. :D  I was in a goon at A3, I had just dropped (a pretty poor one at that) and was trying to bug out as a spit, yak and Ju88 came up from the field to nail me.  I dove under the three attackers (none of them scoring a hit) and turned E to escape.  As I crested the mountain just to the NE of the base the bad guys were engaged by some friendlies but the yak turned towards me and started to close on my six.  As he reached 1.5k out I started to hug the Eastern slope of the mountain in my goon.  The yak closed to firing range so I pulled up into a steep climbing turn, following the slope of the hill.

The yak overshot so I pulled through to a NE heading and started to drop into the valley that runs N-S just to the E of A3.  The yak came in again, so I broke into him hard, all the while calling for help over the radio.  Unfortunately, my pleas went unanswered.  It was at this point that I realised that I was out turning the yak down in the valley.  I had the goon in a steep turn with full rudder and I was actually gaining angles on the yaks six.  If only I had a nose gun!

For about 5 minutes we went around and around, both of us almost augering several times.  Finally xaqut1 (a squaddie) came on the radio saying that he was nearing A3.  When I called him to say I was still down in the canyon with the yak, alive and well, he was amazed, so was I!  By this stage I had almost stalled in a few times and the yak had extended out to about 1.5k, only to once again turn back into me.  I told xaqut1 what was happening and he dove down into the canyon.  I was dragging the yak into yet another series of circling when xaqut1 poured a long burst into his plane, dropping the yak in one pass without even having to jettison his 2x1000lb bombs.  I had not only survived but didn't even have a scratch on the goon!  To make it even sweeter, I got the field capture!

I was so amazed I couldn't say anything for a while, then all I could talk about was out turning the yak in my goon   Unfortunately I only filmed the last couple of minutes but I will post that here shortly.

It was a great flight.  :)  Thanks again xaqut1 and CavemanJ for watching over my goon.

Sounds like the C-47 needs to be perked.

In all seriousness though, I have seen C-47's pull some great stuff.  One in particular I remember evaded my first pass by doing a hammer head.  Felt kind of sorry for the guys in the back.

Maybe we should have an acrobatics competion with C-47 sometime.  We could use the troops as 'smoke'.

I've seen a couple of great moves from goon drivers. I've never heard of one evading for that long though. I've reached a point I go vertical any time I see a dnacing goon. If you get sucked into a flat turning fight in an e fighter you may have a tough time with a good goon driver. Must of been a fun fight....for the goonie:)

a couple weeks ago I had serious troubles to kill a goon and it took about 10-15 passes before it died. Finally it started to smoke and augered or pilot was wounded. Anyway I was really happy about it, it was my first kill with arado. :D

That's the great thing about having Hermit (AKA Mitsu) show up, you know the Bish or Knits will be falling like leaves. I have to work my butt off to maintain a 3/1 K/D in the Ki-61. Yet, Hermit seems to have no trouble keeping a 10/1 ratio. Amazing. During one big fight about a week ago, I was relieved to get two kills and survive with my hair. Yet, during that same time period, Hermit got 7, and made it look easy.

My regards,

Widewing

Great story! WTG!

I had 3 fighters once trying to kill my goon. They eventually did, but it took them five passes. If I survive two or three passes - I consider it a good fight, because I slowed them down and wasted their ammo.

I love it when they leave in frustration or lack of ammo.

The trick to kill a goon driver that does this is to high yo-yo -using your roll rate to out turn them - careful not to augur.

Being a former drummer of 14 years myself.   You won't believe ti but the "greatest drummer ever" comes up from time to time.  Those two are ALWAYS tied for first.   In all honesty you can't pick one of them.  They are both inhuman in their ability to hit the skins.  Mind-boggling.

I know this is probably what you DIDN'T want in a reply, but this the truth from my point as a drummer.
