Title: Anyone shaving with a straight razor?
Post by: miko2d on May 21, 2002, 10:03:28 AM
Anyone out there shaving with a straight razor?

Any reasons to chose it vs. regular blades or electric?

What is involved (sharpening, etc.) and how much time/effort is it?

What are good razors and where to get them?

 Just curious.

Yup, But only when I want a really close comfortable shave that needs to last all day. (seldom anymore) ;)  I use a electric most mornings, lazy.
start here.

I think Yahoo clubs still has a razorplace or something to that effect that used to have good info.  First rule NO STAINLESS, good hollow ground carbon steel. (http://razorcentral.tripod.com/[/URL)

It is very difficult to use a straight razor on yourself.  I think you will need alot of tissue paper the first few times you try...I did.

It gives you the best shave though...and I "used" to get my barber to give me a straight razor shave after I gave up trying to slit my own throat. But, now that Aids is a concern I stick to a regular razor and do it myself.

I miss barbers using the straight razor, can't find them anymore.  I'd never trust myself with a straight blade though, I nick enough with a safety razor.

Yep, Fatty, I gotta agree with ya.  I would probably be locked in a padded room if I tried to use one due to the numerous cuts,...they would think I was trying to kill myself.

My wife does waxing. She doesn't do my face, but she's waxed my bikini line and my back. Although I have copious amounts of body hair, and am in fact banned from all public swimming pools for clogging up the filters, I've never had facial hair. In High School they used to call me "Lady Yetti" and make me wear lipstick. Man, Miko, you bring back bad memories. I hated High School.

What's this shaving malarkey? A quick buzz with a trimmer on No 3 once a fortnight does me fine.

I own a straight razor, but have never been brave enough to use it on myself.

You need to be a pretty accomplished blade sharpener in order to keep it as keen as it needs to be.

Just get a Mach 3.  The best self shave you can get.  I've heard some complaints about the triple edge head being a bit thick for some guy's upper lip, but that's pretty minor.

The key to a good shave is in the preperation.  I always shave at the end of a shower when the humidity has had a chance to soften the whiskers.  I used to use a high quality (and expensive) shaving lotion/soap, but recently I've taken to using a herbal hair conditioner.  Seems to work just as good, and makes my face feel better.  Plus I don't hafta buy two different items now.  Work the lotion in well to help the whiskers stand up away from the face.  Let it sit for a few minutes to soften 'em even more.  Then go to it.

I typically shave with the grain first and then do a quick run against the grain after I've done my whole face.   If you haven't shaved regularly with a blade, this may be a bit irritating at first.  And some guys are more suseptible to ingrown hairs this way.

For a quick job, I've found that the Remington microscreen triple-blade electrics do shave pretty much just as close as a blade.  Maybe not quite as good as the Mach 3 blade, but better than regular single edge blade.

Many years ago, when I was about 7 or 8 years old, I was walking to the local grocery store on a fine summers eve at about dusk to buy some ice cream or something.  On the way home I found a neato looking metal device laying on the sidewalk that somehow operated with moving parts.  Being dark, I couldnt really tell that I had picked up a very very SHARP straight blade razor.

When I finally got home under the light of the front porch, I discovered why my hand felt so sweaty.  I had cut the HELL out of both my palms and never felt a cinch of pain at the time.

Never touched one or had any desire to since...hehe

This has got to be the single most homosexual post ever. I mean
how gay can you get?   I shave at the end of a shower when the humidity has softened the whiskers. I use herbal hair conditioner and it makes my face feel soo good

I use Bic's disposable razors, you know the ugly ones with just one blade. And I use them more than once. muahahaha
And I use cold water instead of herbal hair conditioner.

Sometimes I just use the kitchen knife. The saw-toothed one.

This reminds me of "Amercan Psycho".  Scary.  Do you have any axes, chainsaws or woodchippers in the house?
