Title: RUSH - Vapor Trails
Post by: MuadDib of Dune on May 21, 2002, 08:34:15 PM
Purchased the new RUSH CD.

Some good stuff there.  Peart has written some deeply moving passages and Lifeson/Lee have done a very good job translating the lyrics into musical works.  I was expecting something more intricate and inspiring musically but those days are better assigned to youth.

FYI: Neil Peart endured the severe personal loss of his entire immediate family several years back.  Its amazing that he survived the loss of his only child, a daughter aged 20, in a Jeep rollover accident and within a year the loss of his wife to cancer.  Gotta love, admire and respect the guy.  He obviously had deep support and love provided to him in his grief.

I am so very pleased to see that Mr Peart is back from the edge. I couldn't believe it when I heard his wife died. I know I would struggle to cope with that level of loss.

I am a Drummer and I thought we'd lost this guy. So cool that he is getting out and doing his thing again.

It's good to see that he's going on with his work and his life.  His wife and daughter would have not wanted it any other way.   to him.

As well as to Eric Clapton and Robert Plant.  Both had to endure losing young children, if I'm not mistaken.

RUSH rocks...till Geddy starts singing. I've never liked his blackboard screaching voice. It must be that 57 chevy rear fin of a nose. I've learned to tune him out and listen to instrumental music.

Vapor Trails is one I'll need to listen to alot to appreciate - but Rush is the reason where I am today as a session bassist - songwriter - producer in Nashville

Rush is my Fav band of all time - but I am inclined to lean towards thier 70's to mid 80's albums as favorites -

If anyone is interested in carpooling to a show - I'm all up for it (within reasonable distance thatis )

Going to thier show in Nashville in August

'All the world's indeed a stage, and we are merely players, performers and portrayers; each is another's audience outside the gilded cage'

'plus ca chance plus se la meme chose'

Black Sheep..

man I sure could've used your talents on my project.

I had to midi program it and it just doesn't groove the same...

*edit*
YYZ is so named because of the beat...

(intro beat and riff)

it's the same timing as morse code YYZ

Nice version of la stringa wlfgng!  That's my favorite rush album :) with 2112 in a very close 2nd.  As a bass player I can't tell you how many ways Gedy Lee has inspired me, even when I spent 10 years playing guitar.

I need to get vapor trails.  I tried the day after it was released, but it was sold out at the 2 stores I went to.  I've hearn it kicks arse....

Bringing me back to the early '80's...  Alex is a pilot.  He heard that morse code identifier for Toronto airport and thought it had a catchy "beat."  They started jamming to it at much faster tempo than airport broadcasts and from that jam it became the intrumental we all know and love.

yep - cool always glad to do tracks or produce em - You can hear the Rush influence in alot of the songs I write

I am gonna try to create an introduction for AH so that it can play as a loop from the start menu - now whether it should be traditional era or something fast paced and current i dont know - should I post a thread on this?

also i will post some of my mp3's if I can figure how to compress the snot out of them using winzip

Very nicely done Wlfgng.

Both RUSH and Yes played great roles of inspiration for my own musical endeavors.  Coming up in the late 70s and early 80s I was influenced strongly by the generation before me, Entwhistle, Bruce, McCartney (highly underrated melody master) to name a few.   Later Tom Peterson played a big role in keeping me grounded in my choice of style conservatevely speaking.  So much so that I invested in a Hamer 12-string B12S.  My other personal favourite is a Rickenbacker 4001CS (Chris Squire Limited Edition Signature Series) based on the 1963 varient of the 4001.  Many others have come and gone but these two just wont let up.

Looping again, very nice work

Yes, please post some original work.

Thanks guys, complements are always welcome!  hehe

It takes forever to get it all recorded, mixed etc..
and then converted to mp3's
I still am not satisfired but can't linger forever on covers.

I use Cakewalk for most of it and if any of you bass players wants to collaborate I'd be open to other projects.
It gets pretty old programming midi for most of the other instruments.

or a drummer that can record to midi!   :D    yeah!

P.S.  I suck at song writing so how's about some hep:)

It's nice to see some musicians in here!!  I played drums from the 5th Grade to a few years ago.  Sold my DW kit for $3000 (didn't get a birthday present or christmas present for 6 years!) made $1000.  Kept that kit immacculate.   The wife diddlyed up, a couple of months ago, I mentioned I might want to get back into drumming, and she said "Why don't you?"  I just got burned out with drumming, so I may take up Bass or Guitar.   Fav. Rush Song of all-time?  Have to be 2112.

Took the wife and a friend to the Test for Echo tour at the Palace of Auburn Hills (96), sat 6th row main floor.  Saw them on the Counterparts tour.  Animate, my fav. drumming song.

that might be another album - Vaporous Entrails -

Anyways - Yeah I got a studio in Nashville - I use a dual 800 Mac and run Logic 5 - plus lots of other toys - bought a Sonor kit to record with - it's ok - the drummer I play with has Larry London's kit from Journey's Raised on Radio album - and it still sounds good - yeah let me know if ya want to collaborate - I still need to post some mp3's in zip format.

hell yeah I wanna :)

can you use Cakewalk files by any chance?

I'm collaborating with an old friend that now lives in upstate NewYork.. we each have CD burners and just send the project back and forth... I'll add tracks, he'll add tracks, etc.

in fact, anyone that uses Cakewalk would be welcome in my book!

of course there are other ways but it's the easiest for me  doh

matter of fact if you can send me any tracks to 'la villa strangiato' - I can put bass on it - and I also have about 10GB of samples - drums mostly - so if I had the midi - I might be able to drop them in - but yours sound good -

Man I was wanting to hear the rest of it!!!

anyways - you have a good ear for doing that - I want to cover Circumstances at some point as well hehe

if you are close - i'll start a rush cover band with ya!!!  :D

Like Masher, I started playing the drums in the 5th grade as well, but I had to end the playing to what I call "growing up"...basically, bouts with apartment-life and then family and people moving on and all that.  I had the lessons and all that and could sight-read drumkit charts once upon a time and in the 10th grade (like a fool) chose La Villa Strangiato to perform to for my drum-teacher's clinic.  I think it was 10-minutes of playing in front of a bunch of drummers from around the city...what was I thinking?  My being able to play dissapeared more and more as I got older though and it's now been a good 6 years since I last played the skins and I'm almost 36 now.  I started on guitar about 10 yrs ago but I can't quite pick that up like I did the drums.  I can play a lot Rush on it (well, the older stuff up to about "Grace"), but no leads and don't ask me to ad-lib to it.  Lucky you that you can start it back up again.

I'm not overly thrilled with this latest album.  However, "One Little Victory" sounds like a good song to come out of a drum solo with.

Cool to see musicians on here.

I did the same thing.. sorta' :)
started on drums but living in apartments most of my young life led me to something I could 'turn down'... or risk being evicted constantly !

decided on electric guitar because I could use headphones to practice.

This is the worst Rush CD to date by a long ways and although I understand the direction, doesn't mean I'm going to use blind loyalty to enjoy it. Buying fulfills that obligation I guess. At least it wasn’t a bad solo effort by one of them again. Talk about “headaches” indeed.

I really don't know who would enjoy it actually because it doesn't sound like Rush, and it's really not exciting or like anything non-Rush fans would listen to.

Seems more like an experimental recording session than a cohesive “new” “RUSH” Cd. Uninspired guitars, groove oriented drums lack flash and technical precision that wow’d fans of ‘ol, and Geddy’s (IMO excellent voice) delayed, layered, and hidden in the mix as if someone is hiding something..

Pretty crappy but it might give life to the Live DVD I’ve waited 13 years for.

Creamo.

I had my doubts too after the first few listens.  I was especially disappointed by the absence of the masterful sounds of Alex guitar work.  Here he plays about the meanest rythm guitar on the planet but the wonderful lead guitar work from the past is almost completely absent.

However, after the first three songs have passed there is indeed some very nice subterfuge in compositions overall that do make for some intriguing listening.  The lyrics of Peart have most undoubtadly changed, but since he has changed, as we all do, the inspiration and need to follow new paths sometimes give joy even when the results seem to disappoint at first sensation.
Im pleased with his writing.  Especially given his personal trials, Ive found his words very deep and personal.

Another point is how mellow Geddys vocals have become.  Im not too fond of the harmony on vocals but overall the singing is pleasant.

I havent been really thrilled with a Rush album since "Moving Pictures" but the band follows its own path, for better or for worse, and we either go along and enjoy the later works or we dont.  Besides, we will always have "A farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, 2112, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures" to provide a sincere link to times gone by.  When all is said and done, this is a very wonderful thing :)

I'm actually starting to like this album and it may end up being one of my favorites from them the last twenty-years (Counterparts another favorite.)  I think I was at first looking at it with a more than necessary critical eye being a fan and all and any new style they incorporated was tough to swallow.

This CD seems much more guitar oriented to me and I feel it's heavier than most of their recent stuff.  It sounds to me like a cross between Counterparts and Test For Echo, which makes sense being that those are recent albums.  One thing I didn't notice right off the bat is that there are no keyboards.  Yep, as I type this I looked at the credits and it reads:  "Geddy Lee:  bass guitar, vocals" and that's it.  However, in place of some of the melody lines keyboard sequencing might cover Geddy overdubs his voice doing "ooohie oooohs" and "la la las" and stuff, which was a hard pill to swallow but I'm getting comfortable with it now.  (Rush does Enya?)

I think Rush is afraid of an empty sound being a 3-piece band and there is a lot of overdubbing of voices and guitar which does give a full sound, though I don't think it's always needed.  It'll be interesting how it sounds live.  Though I said I feel this album is more guitar oriented, what's odd is there are none of your standard leads like you get in most rock songs.   Being a fan since 1978, I'd have to rate this album above such things as Power Windows (ick, ick, ick), Hold Your Fire, Presto and Roll The Bones.  But the days of Moving Pictures, 2112, Permanent Waves and A Farewell To Kings are gone and maybe that's a good thing...that was all more than 20 years ago.  There are some very strong melodies and choruses on this album and I am enjoying it.  It sure beats my wife's Madonna, Matchbox20 and other stuff.

One Little Victory will make a great opening or even a song coming out of a drum solo, but it's not my favorite.

Hey BlackSheep.. how about we cover 2112 without the vocals ??

We could add guitar/bass/keyboard parts instead of vocals.
I always loved the album but the supersonic  vocals still bug me.

I would love to cover that one - I already know it by heart - yep the vocals are high and it'd be hard to find the right person to do it justice - an option would be to transpose it down a step or 2 and then i'll sing it :)

also i read a transcript where someone asked geddy if they were ever planning on doing a full length movie/video on it and he said that would be something they would consider later on...

I've got drummers here in Nashville that will play on it for free if we can template it down first :) and I know quite a few that will slam on it - looking forward to the CD's you're sending

Probably mineral dust from the humidifier.
