In terms off most produced the beetle wins
over 22 milion builed
Longest builded car it's designed in '38 and is still made in mexico.
Flexibility u can make anything from a beetle like: Buggy's ,Baja Dune racers, Formula V cars Or a fast drag racer. Or make it an old 356 porsche without seeing no difference.
It's chassis was the base off other VW family cars like the Karmann Ghia, Ponton, Bus, 181 etc etc
The beetle was the base used to design the first porsche sport cars
Virtually the first porsche where made off VW part and had a tuned up 1500 cc 4 cyl boxer engine from VW :)
It's a classic car that still goes along in modern traffic
it's parts are still everywhere available (cheap)
Also in different qualitys imitation, original, and modified/improved
Virtually u can build one from scrap.
Although it's not mercedes or a Rolls Royce
it's lines are most charming than they ever build.
It's the most made toy car
From model 1 to the latest there where made about 80000 changes in the design.
That's why it's also a very reliable car
A texan drove with 1 beetle 2.7 milion KM with one engine revision.
The beetle is a car with history IMHO
The most recognisable car off the century

Yes...it served the Wermach very well in the form of a kabulwagon.
I nominate the Bentley as the best car ever made.

Tucker Torpedo.
When it was introduced, it had Safety Glass, Fuel Injection and many other features still in use today. Ahead of its time by 30 years.

My pick as well. Spot on Otto.
May be an apocryphal story, but....
I read that a guy would tape a $100 bill to the visor of his Cobra, and challenged anyone to reach up and grab it after he took off the line and before he hit 60mph. G-forces were too great to let him lose the money.

Maybe so, but the heater sucks.
dh
(Drove around as a bugsicle for several winters)

Damn, I thought you were gonna say the 1989 powder blue Ford Tempo GL with the oxidized paint and rust package. Tis a fine, fine car....
-
I've had 14 bugs,
7 Karman Ghias,
6 Busses,
1 Fastback
1 Squareback
I loved them all, and they are great cars considering when they were designed. By today's standards though, they are crap.
BTW, a one-owner 1966 Volvo P-1800 just hit the 2,000,000 mile mark this year. A world record.
I prefer old crappy Volvos now.

"Maybe so, but the heater sucks. "
Actually, I think the heaters 'blew' , but only when the car was standing still.
I'm no expert in Bug's, I rode in them.
-
Today standards ? they function well in mexico that's why they are still made there.
If u mean fuel economy, luxury, and safety ur right
I drive mine still everyday between modern traffic.
It goes around the corner better than most modern traffic
i can go 145 km/h maximum allowed speed here is 120
find some parts for any other classic car and u will have some difficulty in finding or funding it.
My heater works fine coz i renewed the heat exchangers and the canals the air runs through.
Install a defroster an that other problem solved too.
Ok i can call a very fast sportscar with big engine to be greatest car but none off the sportscar had impact on the human mobility like the beetle and the T-Ford did.
Anyway tune a beetle up and u go from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 secs
no problem either (bye sport car)
-
Oh yeah it floats 2
It is even head object in movies like herbie.
:D
The beetle is more amazing than u know
-
Volkswagen Beetle gets my vote as most prolific car on earth.
Shelby 427SC gets my vote as best all-time car. Brits get some credit there... chasis and rear-end were Ace/Bristol and Jaguar... but the rest is American Muscle. :)

Also I remebered you could fix the engine with bailing wire and duct tape....:D

Kabul Wagon ? Is this a car made in the capital city of Afghanistan ??? :D :D
The Kuebelwagen was the military version of the Volkswagen Kaefer and served very well in the Wehrmacht.
In my life I had a Volkswagen Golf during my university time and later some BMW´s before I got my actual car - a Mercedes 300 CE.
My mother had a Volkswagen Kaefer/Beetle and drove us with it every day to school.
And although I like my actual car, especially its speed on the german highways where no tempo-limits exist ;), but I will never forget the fun I had in this time in the old, slow but extremely reliable Beetle.
So I would also nominate the Kaefer/Beetle.

NO WAY THE TRUIMPH SPITFIRE 1500 WAS THE BEST CAR EVER MADE NOW YOULL GET A PIC OF ONE AS SOON AS I GET HOME AND ON MY HOME COMPUTER

If it was wired by the British.. it is automatically disqualified for any "Best car on earth" consideration.
AKDejaVu
-
why would it be disqualified?????
you should see the triumph sptifire 1500BURN down the fraser canyon...
-
Yep,..Lucas electrics earned thier reputation.
Although the new Jaguar XK8R is a pretty sweet car and probably the best looking British car ever made.
The Beetle is without a doubt the most enduring car ever put on the road, in terms of its style and production longevity. To earn money in high school I used to build custom dune buggies in Corpus Christi, TX. The simplicity of the Beetle's design was amazing and yes, the heaters were a weak link.
The 427SC Cobra,...what can ya say that has not already been said. Fast is not fast enough,..just about covers this car. I would call this a "landmark" car.
If I did a list of top 10 cars that made a difference (here in the U.S.), it would go like this:
1. Model T
2. Beetle
3. 427SC
4. Original Pontiac GTO
5. Original Chrysler 300
6. Original Corvette
7. Original Thunderbird
8. Dodge Superbird
9. Mustang
10. Camaro
YMMV
-
odd could have sworn the beetle was made by VOLKSWAGON (translates into the PEOPLES car from german) hmm peoples cars eh TAKE A LOOK AT THE PRICE FOR THOSE THINGS

Gotta agree with this.
:)
The two overall greatest cars would probably be the model-T and the Beetle. Model T was built with revolutionary assembly methods making it possible to get the car built in a hurry and out in big #'s. The first beetles were designed, what?, 60 years ago? And they are still on the roads today. Simple, cheap transportation. I've owned two of them, and if you keep 'em in good mechanical shape the heaters will almost burn your feet.
Far as sports cars, pimp's choice is good. :) So is the cobra. I also like '67 427 vettes. Only problem with vettes, they can't be driven daily or they'll just fall apart around you. Just like camaros. :) Jaguar E-types are good to look at too, but I hear they like to break down daily.

BTW I think the Honda Civic is pretty "bug like" itself. It has been around a long time now and has a rep as a very solid car.
-
The Honda Accord really should be in a top ten list. Throughout the eighties and nineties it quietly set the bar for what a high quality inexpensive family sedan should be. Also, the early Jeep (willys?) was a revolutionary design in that it was the first 4-wheel drive just-for-fun vehicle and the forerunner of todays sport-utes.
-
Oh yeah, Ford Escort. Many Many sold. :)
-
Civic / Volks
Honda must have been inspired by Volkwagen
their first cars wheren't that reliable it came a way
Now days honda is quality
Just don't like its models and high rev engines
Those engines are just to perfect :D

I used to be able to pull the engine out of my bug in 5 minutes. I could put it back in in 10, in running order.
I read about engine pulling contests at VW meets.
2 guys, 1 jack, engine out in 49 seconds!
Back in in a couple (I think).

HBlair my friend used to had AMC Ambassador (it was hard to find brake disks for it), neighbour had a Matador several years ago and friends dad still owns an "Eagle" 4WD 2D-sedan. That eagle is one out of 3 Eagles which ever came to finland and has a 360cid under the hood now.
Ambassador and Matador were uhmm... crap but Eagle was funny as heck :)

duh skuzzy, that was the plymouth superbird. (maybe you wrere thinking of the Dodge Daytona?) My favourite car by far.

Oops,..my bad...you're right loser. My neighbor had one when I was growing up.

get me a 71 dodge charger with a 575 big block tub it out add a turbo and i'll out run any of ur cars :P :P :P or my car now with a 502 chev big block in a 91 camaro.......

In all fairness- shouldn't the venerable Jeep be in there somewhere? I mean it was so damn usefull I think it was the first pure Military-civilian use production vehicle. And hey- you can't exactly drive to the lake in your Shelby with a cooler and gear can you?

this is pretty nonsensical.
the 71 charger was a big bloated ugly piece of crap. The last nice charger was made one year before. In my opinion the 71 to 73 Chargers are more disgusting than baby puke. And there is no such thing as a 575...even if you "tub it out"( are you referring to a body mod here?)
oh and i bet you my first born you have never seen a 502, let alone have one in your rattly poorly made f body bellybutton car.

DWEEBS!
1949 Nash. You can fix anything on it with a flathead, oil can, and wrench.
The Model T just got us all hooked.
The Beetle? Yeah, I suppose you could say it made its mark, especially considering how many morons made it to the roads with those new, cheaper cars.
The Mustang is a woman's car. Same goes for the 'ro. I hate to say it, but its true.
GTO, Judge, Charger (pre-70's) and the Challenger! Muscle cars with real muscle! Oh, and yeah the original Chrysler 300.
But, these days I prefer things like the Dodge 3500 Quad-Cab w/ V10. And, to each his own.
-
Damn Replicant, that green Aston is a fine looking car!
-
For unassuming style and performance it would have to be the 68/69 AMX (no the wierd 71 model Javelin AMX)
For really pissing off dweebs in their 5.0's or obnoxious little civics the ONLY car is the Pacer-X with a 360. (Or a gremlin built with a 401, but it wont make someone kick in their car door like getting waxed by a Pacer, it's best if the fender paint does not match the door. You get more points if the junk yard codes are still on some of the body parts. Try to creatively hide the dual exhaust too.)
If you lose... so what.
Anyone can have a camaro or a mustang, you really have to be disturbed to drive an AMC

Without question : Jeep Willis

-
Voss, Mopar's are America's Yugo's....Fords and Mustangs all the way!! :D :p
-
I would have included the Jeep/Willys, but they were more military than civilian when they made thier mark.
Here was my reasoning:
1. Model T
The first mass produced car in the U.S. which allowed middle income America to finally own a car.
2. Beetle
The most prolific car ever sold in the U.S. and still the easiest car to recognize from any distance. The versatility of the Beetle goes unchallenged today.
3. 427SC
The first U.S. made car to win the Wolrd Manufacturer's Racing Cup and still one of the fastest cars ever made. It epitomized what would later be called the "Muscle Car Era".
4. Original Pontiac GTO
The original muscle car which started the trend.
5. Original Chrysler 300
The first Hemi engine based car that proved luxury and speed were not mutually exclusive terms.
6. Original Corvette
America's first 2 seat sports car and the first American car to have a body not made of metal. I believe it is also is the longest consecutive production car built in America.
7. Original Thunderbird
Ford's answer to the Corvette, but was geared more to the luxury buyer rather than the sports car buyer.
8. Plymouth Superbird
This car was wrought in controversy. Taking the lead from what Ford did with the Cobra, Chrysler built just enough of these beasts to murder everyone at NASCAR.
9. Mustang
The first "Pony car". Initally, the car was not a sports car, but rather a sporty car offered at low costs. The demand was so great Ford could not build enough of them.
10. Camaro
Chevrolet was caught flat footed by Ford and quickly rushed this to production. Once in production the "Muscle Car Era" would never be the same. The competition between General Motors, Ford, AMC, and Chrysler was really brought to life once the Camaro debuted.
To be sure, there are other automobiles that made thier marks in our history and this list is mostly comprised of hot rods, which I have a partial affinity for.

There were 4x4 versions off the kubelwagen wich could float and cross rivers.

many US soliers traded their jeeps against kubelwagens
they where more fun to drive :D

hye loser stfu cuz i do got a 502 big block and u can build a 575 with specail headers and pistions out of a 502 block
and yes i do have a 502 its not mine but my grandfather buit it before he died and never put it in his 55' chevy so i droped it in my camaro with some help of my uncle so :P i got a pic of it if u have to see it.............ok here it is if it will upload and this is a old pic of it.........

Didn't really forget about it hblair. The 55-57 Chevy really became popular after it became a classic.
The new production sales of it were good, but demand went sky high during the mid to late 60's.
A lot of cars could have squeezed in my list that all had something unique or first to offer something. I kind of picked what I thought were cars that had many combinations of things that appealed to many people of the various eras and offered a change in direction for the automotive industry.
I am sure I missed something in the process. Happens when ya get old. :D

No, there is absolutly nothing wrong with liking the Spitfire. I love mine. But to say that it is the "Best car ever made on planet earth?" That's a troll.
WHAT THE F*** [/COLOR] wrong with it EH [/B]
Well, lets start with the tractor motor. Super heavy, low power (75bhp  ) leaks more oil than burns fuel.
Then there's the performance. 0-60? Maybe today, maybe tomorrow. It can stop pretty well, but even then, has only front disc breaks. Rear breaks are still drums. Tight turn? Prepare for body flex!
Electric. 3 fuses. Yep, whole thing runs through 3 fuses, and I only ever seem to have two fueses functioning at a time lol.
The rag-top has a design flaw, where you can't keep it down too long without pinching the hell out of the rear quarter windows.
Once again, I love my Spitfire but it certainly doesn't qualify in this thread

DJ, I suffer from street rod burnout, and I've never owned one myself. Two of my uncles and my dad are into them. Always buying and selling 'em. It all started in the late eighties when one of my uncles bought '35 Ford 2 door sedan to make a show car out of. He got us (us=me, dad are in body shop business) to chop the top, shave all the chrome, all that mess. Keyless Remote controlled doors from the outside (this was in '88) , corvette drivetrain & suspension front/rear. 24 karat gold all over the place, Inglese carbeurators and intake was over $3k. There wasn't a visible fastener on the whole car that wasn't allen head, and all of them were stainless, and of course the inside of the allen head was painted body color (careful! don't get any paint on the head of the bolt!) GM code 72 medium garnett red, I still remember that. The fenders were worked on the inside, based, cleared, color sanded, cleared again, color sanded and buffed. (the INSIDE of the fender). Fingers bled one more than occasion. There was always something that had to be fixed between shows. Brake rotors were Gold plated (Keep your foot off the brake pedal when pushing it around!) Couldn't crank it because it would blue the headers, causing much polish work. Uncle Jerry had well over $100,000 in it, had someone hired to haul it around the country in '89 trying to hit all the ISRA shows. He ended up placing #2 in the US in altered street rod category in 1989. Even he got burnt out and sold it the next year. That car was something else, but man oh man the work involved.
We've built a few since then. The more I worked on 'em the sicker I get of them.
Dad's owned a few lately. He bought this ford a year or so ago as a driver, and just sold it. He's now building a '34 Ford Cabriolet. Just to get the car to start with he spent 30k+. And thank the Lord we're too busy and he's letting somebody else build it. (WOOOOT! ;)
So, yeah, I can appreciate street rods, but from a distance. :)
-
That is a purty car hblair.
I think this little gem has got to be on the list too:
-
NO no. It is was and always will be the amphicar. Whoey. Though you do need to replace the steel with aluminum.
But my favorite has to be the '68 ElCamino with the 396 (as he drools on him self).
-
That one only has the 309:(
-
no camino's suck sorry bud

Wow, some very interesting cars here! I think some of you may be missing the original point, and that was the "best" car. 427 Cobras may be very fast and impressive, but they would never have had the impact on the world motoring scene that the Beetle has had because they were not built in sufficient numbers. The Beet1e's success is its simplicity, and its affordability. It brought motoring to many millions of people for the first time.
I bought my first Beet1e last summer! The reason I bought it was because I admire its history. But "I loved them all, and they are great cars considering when they were designed. By today's standards though, they are crap." I don't entirely disagree with that statement. They were crap. The original glovebox was made of some sort of cardboard which lasted about 5 minutes. Sound deadening material around the engine was made of a similar material, and the windscreen washers were originally powered by air pressure from the spare tyre!!! I could not buy one from Mexico because I needed one with the steering wheel on the wrong side.
Last month I got some bad news about my bug. The inner panels were corroded and needed replacing - an expensive job. Before going ahead with that, I wanted to know if there was anything else that might be lifed out. The heater channels were tested by tapping them with a hammer. Oh dear, the hammer went straight through. :( The problem with cars designed back then was that rustproofing was not something that was given much thought. And in this country, with our damp climate, rust is what kills most bugs. The inner panels are made of mild steel, with no rust protection.
Repairs would cost more than the car was worth in its current state, so common sense might be to have the car towed away. But I could not allow that to happen. That would be a crime against motoring history. So I am having my Bug rebuilt - at great expense! The inner panels will be replaced, and new heater channels fitted. The wheels will be sand blasted and will look new when done. And the car will be repainted. The new inner panels will be treated with some sort of gooey rust inhibitor. As far as I know, this was not done to the original cars.
I call my Bug Jacob, because its colour scheme is orange with black interior, and reminds me of a package of Jacob's Cream Crackers.
I created my Aces High game ID with this car in mind, with an email address which begins with orangebeet1e.
The heater/demist functions of this car are crap, partly because there's no booster fan at all. Nowadays, cars have a fan with at least 4 speeds!
My "other" car is a new VW Golf V6 Four Motion, by the way :D
-
Very nice pic Beet1e :D
I had to restore mine about 6 years ago.
That was mine first car ever done it's mine first car also.
Now rust come back at some places
But i will do it again if neccesary
Peace bro

You forgot the Oldsmobile, Skuzzy. Should go before Model T as first American car built. It was experimental, wasn't it?
Les:)

Leslie, the Model T was the first automobile in the U.S. that made use of mass production techniques, which lowered the cost of the car significantly, making it affordable for most of America. The Model T outsold everything in its day and not by small margins either.

Not arguing with you about that Skuzzy. That is a fact. Was only curious why Olds wasn't on your list. I always thought Oldsmobile was the leader in design innovations and improvements in American automobile manufacturing.
Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see it mentioned in this thread anywhere.
And since Vorticon has pointed out that a "real moron" wants to learn something from someone who seems to know what they are talking about, I'll gladly carry that burden so any other curious readers on the subject won't have to think of themselves as being stupid for asking a question.
So how 'bout it Skuzzy, what's your stand on Oldsmobile's role in the discussion?

Oldsmobile was responsible for many innovations in the automobile industry. Whether they had a true impact is questionable.
I did think about the Olds Rocket V-8 when putting together the list, but I just could not justify if it really made a difference.
To be sure, Oldsmobile was technically the best division in General Motors for many years. They were indeed innovative, but sometimes they were too far ahead of their time and the materials of the day were not up to the challenge Olds placed upon them. The turbo-charged Rocket V-8 in the early 60's was a shining example.
When I thought about it, I could not come up with one model of Oldsmobile that really stood out as a product that changed the automotive industry in terms of marketing or design.
Like I said,..there were many cars that could be on that list. Truthfully to only pick ten really leaves out many others, but my personal criteria was pretty narrow to get the list to a more resonable collection.
I have read quite a bit about autmotive history, but by no means would know it all. Leslie, if you have some information on Olds, in particular, please share it.

Seems to me a list of the best cars ever made should include a Duesenberg.
BTW thats Gary Cooper in the picture.

have to go with whoever posted the Shelby GT...
a REAL car IMO.

Good call. The Deusy, Auburn and Cord were all great cars in their time.
Anybody here ever been to the Deusenburg museum in Las Vegas? It has like 20 or so Deusy's and they advertise the inventory as worth 15-18 million (or something like that).

Hmm...
For impact, influence and success, maybe the Bugatti T35. If your going to mention the Bug and the Model T, the Citreon 2CV, ought to be mentioned, if for no other reason than for providing cheap ugly transportation to the masses.
For design impact, hard to argue with the original mini-Cooper. It spawned the design layout for every front drive econobox on the road today.
427 Cobras not the best car ever made (still had English electrics), but probably spurred more automotive "woodies" in teenage boys than any other car. It was the firsty true super car though, it excelled at whatever type of racing it was called to do.
All things considered, for its time, my moneys on the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing coupe. It was, and still is an extraordinary car, years ahead of its time, with a great pedigree.

P.S. EVERYONE know that CARS are made in Germany...

You guys! The topic was best car built on Planet Earth. We seem to be digressing! We're now talking about cars that were the fastest, or cars that had a rarity value. We've even got a GT40 in here! I don't recall if anyone mentioned it, but the GT40 was so named because the roof line was 40 inches above the ground on which it stood.
But for best car, I think we should still be thinking about the cars that brought motoring to ordinary people. In America it was the Model T Ford (Tin Lizzy?) and in much of Europe it was the Beet1e. In Spain, it was the Seat 133 of the 1960s! I hired one of those once  The Beet1e was popular in Africa because it would run on low grade fuel, and was easy to maintain.
But hey! it's OK. I've enjoyed seeing all these cars again. Would you believe it - this Limey owned two Chevy Camaros - a 1977 Type LT, and a 1980 Berlinetta. What I noticed right away was that the performance of American cars is very mild for the engine size. That Type LT (and the Berlinetta) had a 5.0 litre (305 cu. inch) engine, but my Ford Cortina 2000E (2 litre) could have seen both of those off. Sad to say, many American cars of c1980 were crap. America was caught out by the fuel crisis, and the influx of Japanese imports like the Mazda 626 that everyone wanted. No-one wanted the gas guzzlers any more. By the way, the Mazda 626 was one of the most popular and best cars in the world - 22 years in production so far...
Anyway, America was turning out little sawn off Cadillacs. The Buick 230 cu inch engine was a joke. It was a 6 cylinder unit which had been converted from a 8 cylinder unit, and the crankshaft and camshaft had been crudely adapted for 6 cylinder use. As you all know, in a four stroke engine, each cylinder fires once per two revolutions of the engine. In a 6 cylinder engine, there should be a firing stroke initiated every 120°. But oh! Such was the adaptation of this engine that there was a firing stroke every 90° then 150° alternately! Needless to say, customers complained of uneven running. Big f*cking surprise  That was 1980, and I was living/working in the Chicago area. I wished I'd done as a friend did, and bought the Mazda 626. Oh yes, I think Toyota Corolla belongs on that top ten list somewhere for quality and reliability, and I seem to remember that multivalve (or multiport) engines were a Japanese creation originally. I've owned four Toyotas (last one was a Supra 3.0i turbo) and they were all excellent.
But OK, the Americans have made some quite nice cars. I took a photo of this one in New York City a few years ago. It's a Buick Le Sabre - year unknown. I'll post the rear view in the next post.
-
...and here is is from behind. Can anyone tell me more about this model?
-
"I think we should still be thinking about the cars that brought motoring to ordinary people"
Quite a different topic from the best car ever built, from my point of view. Maybe its a consideration, but certainly not the primary one. Best car built in the world to me that means the car should have equal parts build quality, design innovation, reliability, engineering, styling, performance. Thats why I picked the 1955 MB 300SL. It has it all in spades.
Huge production numbers just means its built to the lowest common denominator so everyone could get their hands on it (e.g. Yugo). I would still rank the VW up there though given my criteria.
-
picked up a garage kept '69 Beetle for my son for a steal - $1200
noticed yesterday the reverse lights don't come on when he shifts into reverse. Fuses seem good. Where would one of you vw experts suggest to check next?
TIA

Also any danger with the gas tank being n the hood? He's 16 and this is his 1st car ...

Great buy there Eagler. I love those 2 tone beetles.
-
beet1e, that Buick appears to be circa 1959-61. Not exactly sure, but I can find out if ya want.
Yes, a lot of people are posting neat cars, but not really on topic. To do it right, we would need to categorize cars.
All of this is very subject to opinions. We all have our own unique things we want and believe are the best things in an automobile. I am glad of this or there would only be one car on the road. With what people want in an automobile comes great diversity in the makes/models/options. Thank goodness.
If you put 10 people in a room and ask them what the "best" car ever made was, they would never reach a conclusion. The term is just too broad.
And as you can see in this thread,..everyone has an opinion based on thier own perspective as to what is best. I see this as a good thing.

Eagler - my 1972 1200 Beetle doesn't even have reverse lights - see pic. Are you sure your son's car has them? Could it be that modified light clusters have been used, with some clear glass for the reverse lights, but with no reverse lights present? I did once have a car like that - opened up the rear light cluster and doh! -no bulbs present, and wiring not completed. :(
Lugnut - you are right. There are so many ways to evaluate "best". It might be fast, good looking, well built, reliable etc. Of course, on an individual basis, Beet1e's were not the best. In many ways they were crap!
-
Beetle... The U.S. did not have tail light units like that after 1967. The "drop" was replaced by tailights like the bug in Eagler's picture up until the early 70's, then by much larger round tailights.
Eagler... the Volkswagen did very well in the NTHS safety tests in the 70's. The only real issue noticed was the legendary footage of a bug rear-ending a pinto in these tests. The license plate bolts of the bug penetrated the fuel tank and caused a small explosion and fire. The Bug received among the highest marks for being rear-ended and rear-ending someone.
The only real thing I'd stress with a volkswagen is ensuring there is adequate protetion to keep the rear seat from shorting out the battery when someone sits in it. Take a look at the setup and you'll see what I mean.

Nice beetle Eagler
Ur son will love it :D
Rust mostly appears under the doors(dorpels)
check near engine to where the heater inlet pipe is montaged
On that picture the beetle looks fine dough
American beetles also had other bumpers than the europe ones.
wich are safer
U can replace the tank in front for a plastic one.
Good luck with that car

About 15 years ago a friend was leaving the state. He sold me his car for $100. A week later, after investing about $400 in plywood, lexan, house paint, etc., I pulled this beauty out of the garage:

Since were all talking about our rides.. I was one of those Kids where the parent shouldn't have given them a HP car. This was a 77' Pony... She was a hot little ride 93-95 in high school I loved to prey on those civics and other rice rockets..Thos she didn't make it to my freshman year of college I wrecked her.. and was a total loss  I have to say it was a great car..now I cruse around in a 2000 Rodeo and soon to be a 2002 R/T Stratus Coupe..

Be sure that it´s with the 1,8 TURBO engine. After that SKY is the limit to those HP´s (and our WALLET of course). :D

Doh! Liquid cooled engine at the wrong end!
As a driver of the classic Beet1e, whenever I pass another Type 1 (air cooled beet1e) or Type 2 (air cooled kombi bus), I will wave to the other driver and he/she will wave back. I even got waved by a Karmann Ghia driver and passenger one time. The common denominator is air cooled. Sometimes, a guy or lady will wave to me from one of these new Beet1es and, being a terrible snob, I do not wave back. I might just nod or smile (if I fancy the girl driving - there's a girlie round here who drives a blue one, and hasn't yet learned the VW protocol).
But admittedly, the new beetles look nice, airy and plenty of head room. And I bet they wont be prone to rust like the old ones.
Mine is still in the shop :( Getting ready to part with £3800 (about $5000 or 5000 Euros) when it's finished.
I have an important question for you Beetle guys: What grade of fuel do you run on? In the UK, we've gone pretty much to Unleaded since about 10 years ago. But you can buy LRP lead replacement petrol. That's what I use, because although the ignition timing might be suited to unleaded, I don't know if the valve seats of the engine are hard enough to make it with unleaded. By the way, we're supposedly self sufficient in oil here in the UK, but the Government taxes road fuel to such a degree that it's the most expensive in the world - it works out to about $1.10 per litre. Thank you, Tony Blair.
-
I use 20w/50 mineral oil
don't use thinner synthetic oil
Oil from STP is very good
or Miller's classic oil
-
And i don't wave at new beetles either
Those yups don't know what it is to rip a beetle and build it up again.
I annoy them with my loud engine sound :)
-
cc. oil type, but what fuel type?
-
Beet1e... unleaded fuel will be just fine. Many people question the effect of unleaded fuel on even old engines... citing that they have never seen a valve issue caused by unleaded fuel. Besides... if you've had the engine rebuilt, it really won't matter.
BTW... I've owned 1 type I and 2 type III's... the type III guys are a more tight knit group. ;)

I had mine engine rebuild so i can just go for the unleaded
98 octane fue
I think if u have an old engine it's better to get leaded fuel.
That doesn't exist any more .
Mine engine was a 1300 cc AS 41 block
Now it got a 1600 cc cylinder set that u can place without any modification.
Its crankshaft is balanced with a lighter flywheel.
I also got an angleW camshaft in it with 278' degrees i believe
for more power below and midrange
The camshaft followers are replaced by hvy duty ones also
I thrown away the airfilter and replaced it with a K&N one
The engine is a joy now and runs very smooth :D
about 60 hps

A quick question(s) pls...
trying to fix the backup lights, looking for the "transmission switch"
Can I see/get to this thing from under the car? Read up on it, it said you should be able to see it on the drivers side on the transmission box? That's the first thingy attached to the engine heading towards the front, right? If so I can't see the sensor. Does it look like the one on the master cylinder? I got to play with those as I was working on the brake lights the other weekend. I broke them working on the horn :)
Speaking of horns, does that ring under the button in the center of the wheel wear out? I had juice up to it and shorting it to ground gave me a beep but all assembled I might get on quick toot, then nothing. I had to rig a up a button to get my son a horn. I changed all the connections trying to improve the gnd and all but no luck so think its the actually ground mech in the steering wheel.
thanks for any help/advice

another quick question :)
The fuel line from the tank to the cap has an overflow tube. This tube had a tee in it which ran a small hose around the inside of the trunk up around the wiper motor/ fuse panel down to the drivers side. THe end was capped with a screw. It stunk bad of gas so I removed it & te tee by replacing the entire piece of overflow hose.
Is that ok? What use did it serve?

BUF to add to the list of Beetle's.
While IN Mexico my old man and I observed a bug with a Cheez-Whiz lid gas cap. When we walked up to it, the guy twisted it off (no mods.) and twisted it back on. It was snug.
