Title: gforce 4 440 question?
Post by: WhiteHawk on May 29, 2002, 01:57:10 PM
upgraded from a gf2 mx to a gf4 440 recently, I am quite
happy, but my frame rate will ot exceed 60?
I have unlimitied frames checked in ah video setup, I cant find
any other throttle in the display setup.
I can be flying by an airbase with some activity, town in picture,
some clouds, and beutiful terrain as far as the eye can see and
be at 59 fps.  If I change the view to clear blue sky it goes to
60, but never, never, over 60.  Not even 1 frame??
  Any ideas?

This doesnt really affect gameplay, i am just curious what max
frames would be.

I run at 1200 x 1024 res

p4 1.7 GHz
512 RAM
gf 4 440

MONITOR
-----------
Samsung syncmaster 770 tft (flatscreen)
refresh at  72hz

Check your video drivers settings and your monitor refresh rate. Maybe you have v-sync on and your monitor refresh is set to 60Hz. This way your fps cant go beyond your monitor's refresh rate.

Your system should be able to go 80fps+ at 1280x1024@32bit.

WhiteHawk, is that new card of yours a GF4 440MX or TI4400?

The difference is huge. If it's a 440MX, then I think the answer is going to be not to your liking.

banana is wrong, I have a GeForce4 440 MX and get 90 FPS with regularity. The trick is to set it up properly. Here is how.

Note: I am running Win2k Pro. Your OS may have different paths to the same settings. Also, ensure that the most current NVidia drivers are installed.

1) Right click on your desktop and select "active desktop" then "customize my desktop".

2) Select the "Settings" Tab and then the "advanced" button.

3) Select the "Geforce4 MX 440" Tab and then the "additional properties " Button.

4) Select the "3D antialiasing" button

5) Select "Manually select the antialiasing mode"  and check the 2x box.

6) Select "OK" to clear out of that.

7) Select the "Monitor" tab and ensure the "refresh freq." is set to 85Hz.

8) Next start AH and on the first screen that appears select "Video".

9) Select your desired screen resolution, and enable MIP Mapping, set color depth to 32 and max frame rate to "unlimited".

10) Select OK, and then Quit.

Now we need to increase your clockspeeds. This seems to be the main bottleneck.

11) Download and install "RivaTuner" from

http://guru3d.com/rivatuner/

12) Run RivaTuner and select the "Main" Tab.

13) Under "Target Adapter" you will see a line that reads:

" 128-bit AGP NV17 (A3) with 64 MB DDR Memory   Customize"

Under the e in "Customize" there is an arrow pointing down and to the right. Click on it and select the flag shaped Icon. This will open the "Overclocking" window.

14) Set the "Core Clock" to 325 and the "Memory Clock" to 475.

15) Check the "Apply overclocking at windows startup..." box, select "Save" and then the OK button. Select OK again to close the RivaTuner.

Now, return to step 5 and change the antialiasing setting from 2x to 4xS(direct 3D only).

Log into Aces and have fun!!

:)

60fps for that system is not at all unreasonable.

I was using the same settings but switched to  Quincunx FSAA and 1152x864 32 bit color.

I only have a 1GHZ TBird, with 4XS FSAA @ 1024x768 I experienced FPS dropping into the 30's when large numbers of players and storm fronts or smoke were combined.

In flight the FPS usually is usually 72 FPS, (monitor refresh rate) and 1152x864 and Quincunx look almost as nice as 4XS FSAA does.

If you are running windows xp or windows 2000 it is simply the RefreshRate bug.
google for 'refresh rate fix'

that refresh rate fix is crap.  it limited me back to 60 fps.  I had the same problem WhiteHawk.  I regularly tweaked the 3D settings along with anti-aliasing and all that other junk.  ONe night I was in the CT and i noticed my FPS were ABOVE 150.  It was amazing.  Then, I had to reinstall older drivers for Jedi Knight II and it went back to crap for Aces High.  I honestly think its some sort of tweak that ONLY affects AH.  No other settings affect performance that I dont know about.

Some of the Detonator XP drivers have a bug that won't allow the refresh rate to be changed, do a search for one of the patched versions.
