1946 Luftwabbles..............duck!
XP-72
490 mph, 4 x 37mm cannon woof woof woof !
-
I don't think it was ever armed though, or was it? Was damn fast no matter what, fastest piston engine plane ever i think, or?
Got it all in my book about US planes but don't feel like checking now...
-
Powerplant was a 3000 hp PW 4360. armed with six M2 50 cals. *If* it had made it past experimental stage, it would have likely been the P-47Q. Tests show that it would have likely boasted over 3600 HP under WEP!! This AC if had been pursued would have been a 500+ MPH AC.
Good data on this AC can be found in Warren Bodie's book.
-
Ask me about the XP-47J:cool:
-
Uhmm, I guess it would be a perk :D
-
If ammo's squadron got it, I will quit Aces High!!!
-
BTW I really respect your P-47 squadron, ammo! ;)
-
Don't you too have anything better to do? Like Work? Atleast it is night here so I can sit here and update my mail every minute to see if someone replies :)
GO TO WORK! :D
-
It's still ugly.
F.
-
You too Furious!
yeah, of course it's Ugly, I thought that was clear? No need to actually type it now is there?
-
yes.
-
That would be funny. Some poor 262 or jet bomber pilot looks out window.
german pilot: Holy crap what is that thing.
American pilot: HAHA. looks who is fast now foo:p

ROFL! Maybe the only way we can survive your squadron's KI84 attack:p

heehee, yes that AC would be a beast:) But, i am sure I would still find a wayu to die repeatedly in it:D
-
Didn't it fly combat anti-submarine patrols off of Long Island? P-72 to AH!!!

But how about Luftwaffe '46 planes?-)

actually the XP-47J and the XP-72 were 43 and 44 AC, that never made operational status due to various reasons. Mostly USAAF descision to press on with more production of the dependable P-47D.
-
Then again, a prop plane will never ever be able to catch a Jet in a dive unless the Jet has got lots less E from teh beginning, prop of teh prop plane hinders it from reaching speeds that jets can.

No, only two XP-72s were made.

ALL Jugs are on steriods :)

Ugly ? ......na, look at that baby, Its loud, and stinks, dirty......don't get any better then that . It's not ugly, It's smurfy:D

Actually Wilbus, the F4U-4 can compete with the 262 in a dive. -4 is one of the fastest prop planes ever designed. Along with that P47 and that F8F Bearcat.
~BlueiceJ~
-
Yep, All you have to do is leave your prop (=air-brake) home and ask if someone could tow that F4U to 32k...
-
I'm not sure but IIRC Widewing has something to do with this site: http://home.att.net/~historyzone/Fisher.html
Nice story and a chart about tests with P-47 with supersonic prop.
edit: Me-262 could run 950-1000kmh (590-620mph) in a shallow 20-30 degree dive. You're not going to catch it in any prop-plane.
edit II: Russian turbo-prop bomber Tupolev Tu-95 is capable to run 915kmh (570mph) @25k ft. I believe it's still fastest prop-plane in the world.
-
Gotha Go-229 (Horten Ho IX V3)
Max speed at sea level 949kmh (590mph)
Max speed at 12000m 977kmh (607mph)
Two Jumo 004 B-2 engines, thrust 2x900kg
Armament
Four MK108 (later four MK103 cannons)
Two 1000kg bombs or two drop tanks

Hellcat, no plane with a prop can dive with a Jet plane, once you reach high mach speeds, around mach 0.9-0.95 (different for different planes and props) the prop serves as an Airbrake rather then a puller. That's the reason Jets (and civilian gliders compared to civilian prop planes) accelerate as if the devil was on their 6, and there is nothing that prevents them from going supersonic except for structural limits.
Doens't matter if a plane is fast or not, as long as it's go a prop, the prop serves as an airbrake like Staga said.
But yes, The F4u-4 was very very fast but can't compete with any jet.
-
No matter how super beefed up Jug/F4U/P51/Tempest/Spit/Hellcat/Bearcat/Ubercat gets, it still cannot compete with a serial production 262. Not to mention, if you go by prototype introduction dates, 262 is a 1942 plane ;).
Now, what about highspeed low drag canopies for the 262 ? How about R4Ms ? BK75s ? RATO take off units (what was it to 30k again, don't remember) ? Bombs ? DTs ?
262 is THE plane ;)

"Max speed at sea level 949kmh (590mph), Max speed at 12000m 977kmh (607mph)"
Got any flight report to back that up? ;)

from http://home.att.net/~Historyzone/Seversky-Republic7.html:
"The XP-47M was, essentially, developed collaterally with the XP-47J. The J was fitted with a high output version of the P&W R-2800. Specifically, the R-2800-57. This engine made 2,800 hp @ 2,800 rpm at 35,000 feet. This is in War Emergency Power. The aircraft actually attained 507 mph at an altitude of 34,300 feet. 2,800 hp is 133% of rated power. At military power (100%), the XP-47J could sustain 470 mph. 435 mph was attained at 81% of it's rated power (1,700 hp). All performance figures were obtained at 34,300 feet. The J model was an especially good climbing fighter too. It had a climb rate at sea level of 4,900 fpm. At 20,000 feet, it was still rocketing up at 4,400 fpm, and got there in 4 minutes, 15 seconds. Time to 30,000 feet was only 6 minutes, 45 seconds. Now that's an interceptor! Yet it had a usable range of 1,075 miles. Rather impressive performance. Nor was this a stripped down hotrod. It was fully armed and carried ballast in the wings equal to 267 rds per gun. The aircraft was flown to a height of 46,500 feet and was capable of a bit more."
...and the P-47 M actually saw service (& combat) during the war with no less than the 56th Fighter Group

"...The Me 262C-1a...the C-1a could attain 38,400 ft. from a standing start in 4.5 min..."
W. Green, Warplanes of the Third Reich
(explanation: C-1a means RATO Me 262)
Super Jug for you, RATO 262 for me ;)
-
thats not fair - wonder what time to 30,000' would be for RATO Jug...anyway, Jug could sit up there longer....& what was the 262's ceiling?
