Cleanup of ground zero was completed today. 3 months ahead of schedule and way under budget.
Heros come in all shapes and sizes. Those workers have helped us all feel better about our Country.
-
Cleaned what up?
-
the WTC ruins
-
I hope NY will build the same exact towers again
Like nothin happened in that way u win from the terrorists.
WTG !! NY
-
I hope they don't.
Skyscrapers are death traps.
The WTC was built to survive the impact of a commercial sized jet. It did just that. What they didn't plan on was the hundreds of thousands of gallons of burning fuel.
I saw that video... the one where the firemen said it took them roughly one minute per floor to ascend with full fire gear on.
Do the math... if you're on the 80th floor and need a fireman, it's going to be nearly an hour and a half.

There always solutions i think.
like better building methods(materials)
Better emergency procedures
Or maybe it should have a fire dept within the craper.
Or everyone should have a safety chute
maybe put some goalkeepers on it
But not doing it for the terrorists would give em a victory again
-
uh?
so are most automobiles
Space limitations require us to build up not out, if it wasn't for a few sick & twisted minds - the WTC towers would have out lasted how many of our generations??
-
heres another good solution if they do something stupid like rebuild...
Ack Ack on the roof of every building on manhatten
anti-aircraft missiles in silos surrounding the city and on the roof of the towers
stealth fighters flying around the entire city
yup thatlt do it
or
kill the world 3 times over

I believe it was a "Nova" show on PBS called "Why the Towers Fell".
Bottom line was that it had very little to do with the fire, and more to do with the type of construction used.
The WTC was built with a sturdy central core (Elevator tubes and stairwells) surrounded by a relatively thin skinned outer shell. The real culprit was the type of beam used to attach the outer skin to the inner core. These were the first items to fail and cause the catastrophic collapse. Some engineers actually said that budget constraints in the construction phase determined the type of supports used and led to the collapse.
The fact that all stairwells and elevators were concentrated at the center of the building also contributed to the low number of survivors that were caught above the impact zone. All stairwells were destroyed in building 1 IIRC, and one survived in Building 2.

Saw the same show. IIRC, the fire had everything to do with causing the trusses to weaken and then the floors collapsed right on top of each other because of the construction.
They even interviewed a fireman who stated that buildings constructed using trusses were killers.

Yes, but they also said the airplane fuel started the fire, but was gone before the trusses failed. The attachment points were not sufficient to withstand the warping from the fire. Eggs and chickens I guess.

Yeah... eggs and chickens.... :)
