BMW R100RT was mine. he died on 28th march 2002 when a knobhead in a Volvo u-turned into my path. I broke my throttle arm and had to lay off AH for a month! (but I bought a Killah Laptop with the insurance money!) I've decided to give up now because I look at my 2 kidlets and worry about how easy it is to get F*****d up.

Currently have a BMW K75RT. No photo :(

Spent 12 years riding a Kawasaki KZ1000P and got paid for it. :P

Stopped after totalling out a Mustang driven by a college kid here on daddies money who turned left in front of me. Was disabled and couldn't return to street duty. Had to hang up the foot boards and let the career go.

Title: Do you have a motorbike?
Post by: SKurj on May 31, 2002, 06:54:40 PM
Not an easy question to answer Joe...

What style of bike appeals to you? and Why?

racer style, Ninja's GSXR, R1 etc are not the best for puttering around town, or hitting those straight boring highways.  They can be killer in insurance too

Cruiser's like harley davidsons, don't turn well, but offer a low seat height and are fairly comfy around town.  Sometimes the laid back seat position can be hard on the arms on a long trip

Tourers like the gold wing etc... well with all them fairings.. is it really a bike??  +) weigh a ton, probably cost 20k+ nowadays

standard  like the gpz1100 (i think thats its name) and there are several others on the market, the katana's of like 6 years ago come to mind here as well.  Not as extreme as the race bikes, usually using proven mechanicals(ie older technology of last generation racer bikes) offer more comfort than racers and a much nicer price tag

dual purpose, dirt bikes for the street... not worth trying to head down the highway on one of these unless you are looking at some of the big ones like the BMW

too much typin

People who really ride know that no matter how good you are. No matter what kind of bike you have you still have to ride with the others on the roads. Some of them are q-tips, others are oblivious and some actually think it's cool to race on public roads. Either one will kill you in a heartbeat. You have to ride as if everyone else on the road is out to get you, frequently, they are. It doesn't matter if they meant it or not, you'll still be the one that lost the contest between motorcycle and larger vehicle. I rode professionally and won awards for skill in Police rodeo's. It took 12 and a half years but I still got tagged. Fortunately the result wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been.

If you ride, get training and then get freaking paranoid becuase they ARE out to get you.

Mate, everybody crashes.  If you dont have a crash in your first few years of biking then when you do it'll be a big one.

I've been riding 12 years, crashed maybe 6 times on the road in the first 4 years with no lasting effects.  Crashed on the track several times and got a pin holding my elbow together that throbs when we're gonna get snow.

See, if you dont have a few minor crashes (slides, high sides, cars pulling out on ya) then you dont get used to avoiding toejame like this and will go on getting more and more over confident until you run a red light at 90mph and become a hood ornament on the Greyhound to Tulsa.

Buy something cheap, crappy and slow (but not too slow) for your 1st bike.  Something that you can slide down the road, pick up again and carry on without having to stick too many bits back on with tape.

See, it's like learning the guitar.  Learn on some old accoustic heap of crap that twangs like a bastard when you dont get it perfect......then when you move to the $5000 electric guitar you'll be playing it like Clapton and think it's really easy.  If ya do it the other way around then you'll get used to the ease with which you can get a decent note of the electric and make a complete tit of yourself when a pretty girl asks you to play her accoustic.  It's the same with bikes, if you can ride a 250 superdream and actually keep up with a combine harvestor then when you move to the Ninja you'll already be an expert.  Do it the other way around and you wont be ready for the slides, shakes, frame flexes and stuff that kills bikers.

My personal bikes:

Honda C70 moped.   Damn thing had a sticky choke so would only run for 10 mins.
Kawasaki AR80.  Top speed 65mph....on a good day, with a tail wind, down hill.
Suzuki RGV250.  2 cyl 2 stroke.  1 side seized on me while doing 100mph on the motorway (what Brits call a freeway).
Kawasaki ZXR400.  Put a carbon fiber exhaust on this, black screen, purple hand grips, re jetted and it went 150mph.  Then some bastard stole it.
Yamaha YZF-R6.  No mods yet, it'll do 165mph out of the crate.  That'll do fine for me thanks. (raced a Ferrari 355 towards Amsterdam - I won).

Ridden loads more race bikes (and crashed em).

currently in garage my 82 XJ 1100, 360 Bultaco Pursang, and a RD 350 .  At work theres a RZ250 (yes a full blown race bike),3 honda 600 flat trackers (various frames Champion,Woods .,ect ) GXSR 750, GXR 1100, A yamaha Drag bike.  baskets of the nasty Z-1 kawasikies . and all sorts of odd stuff,
i have also rebuilt alot of bikes that have been wrecked .

For the doner bike i recommend a GXSR 750 Suzuki (its the best balanced bike ive ever ridden of that type ,and  id put any beginner on one , the Ducati's are also great bikes (stay away from the big bikes) u might think its cool to have a 900+ but most of these will get u in trouble .they have various rakes to their forks and  handling changes a hell of alot at different speeds/power settings. its to much to learn for a new rider .
For a crusier  well they all have good and bad points depends on ur pocket $$.

a great bike for learning on  is the older 250- 550 honda's/med street bikes , or a  good enduro w/ a 4 stroke, the 800 intruders arnt bad either ,most of these types can be bought used for less then 1000.00 here in the US
Ive got over 70,000 street miles in traffic on bikes and ive only had to lay down 2 x's on the street . in the dirt/track is a diffent matter.

My best suggestion over all is always wear leathers/jeans  and a helmet,  dont just hop on in shorts and run to the store , Take a bike riding course to .(alot of places have classes at your local race track and  dealerships have a bullitin board w/ local riding clinics going on )

If you cant pick the bike up you shouldnt be learning on it !

+)  Well lets put it to you this way Joe...

A bike is much smaller than a car.  One of the most common bike accident is when a car pulls across in front of you.  The driver doesn't notice you coming and bang! your over the bars...

It may not be your fault.. but you will drop a bike, maybe more than once.  It may not be so dramatic of course.  Some bikes do not have very stable stands.  Mebbe one day u will forget to put the stand down +)

Trust me +)  people who have never dropped a bike, never touched one

What a load of horse toejam.  I HATE the fact that so many guys do their best to convince new riders that they're gonna crash.  Nothing like scaring the hell outta people to get 'em riding.

There's absolutely no reason you'll ever have to crash if you're intelligent and responsible.  I've been riding for a decade and a half without a crash and am no more likely to crash today than I was on day 1.  Quite  a bit less likely, in fact.  I ride intelligently and within my limits, both on and off the track.  I am aware of what's going on around me and am observant of other motorists.

Sure, if you're stupid, you're likely to crash.  But there's certainly nothing that states "a lack of crashing makes you stupid."

Which isn't to say that one shouldn't always be prepared to crash.

A beginning riders course should be made mandatory.

You ever seen any tests done regarding the safety factor of jeans?  Neglidgable.  Abrasion testing on asphalt, they lasted about a foot before they wore through.  Of course the tiny bit of protection that they provide is better than nothing, but don't convince yourself that jeans offer any sorta real protection in a crash.

my Rd 350 is a late 73 purple/white with no mods to it (i think alot of these bikes were turned into Cafe style racers )  i mix my fuel now vs using the auto injector , the engine has been reringed once ..  this  is my very 1st street bike (my dad gave it to me when i was 15 ) its the 1st bike i went over 115 mph on, also the "only" bike ive ever gotten a ticket on  . (no headlight on ) .LoL
i remember  racing  it against my uncles 650 Triumph . and beating him with it when i was 16 ... (by the way he still has his Triumph )
1st bikes honda 50 then a trail 70 ,175 bultaco ,DT175 yamaha, the Pursang 360 bultaco ,a DT360 yamaha ,the RD350,a CB750,a TT500 ,a KZ 900 triple, and from here i just got crazy an people started giving me the things.

P,s. my comment about jeans means that u dont ride in shorts .(I  still see Idiots in shorts on bikes  "Doners")
i have layed down in jeans befor it was a 1st rain thing in cali and the roads get really oily and a car pulled out in front  and i had nooooooo place to go . i slide about 15- 20 feet on my arse  / arm/ back...  my wallet pocket took most of the beating  and my leather jacket .  i got lucky that i didnt high side it .   i had been riding on the street for 7 years when this happened and this was my 1st crash on the street . I was on my 73 HD (they had terriable brakes ) that was the main reason .you guys that have owned older Harleys know exactly what i mean.
Now i cant and wont say that everyone will crash on a bike but in congested  citys it just may happen.

in todays world everyone should have to wear full leathers on a bike.(i should listen to myself here for i still putt to work in jeans and leather coat most of the time)5 miles  no freeways, but its my skin i can do what i want .
As for dropping  a bike its always the one w/ the best shiny stuff/most expensive farings ( a ratt bike never falls over)and this always leaves you looking around to see in anyone saw you .LoL
ill post pics  as soon as i fix my blasted scanner .

Tell that to my brother, who years ago had a spare tire from a camper fall off in front of him while riding his Honda Goldwing. Put him in the hospital for 5 weeks ...damn near killing him.Does that put him in your "unintellegent, irresponsible and stupid  category ?Only thing that saved his life is the gear he was wearing.

Bottom line is your driving a bike. Not a car or a truck, and the VAST majority of drivers out there do not mentally recognise or acknowledge what you are driving to be a vehicle and will do stupid crap like pulling out in front of you, turning left in front of you, of changing lanes like your not even there. I've been driving since 84 and it happens at least once evrey year.Sucks but thats what we have to put up with. Best thing you can do is be prepared and spend the extra cash on good gear, and take some kind of instructional course to let you know what to look out for. Cause chances are...even against the smalles of cars... the bike and its driver will get the short end of the stick in a crash.

I'm not talking about accidents of that type.  Not sure how you can interpret what I said as that.   Anyone can get caught up in an accident that's not their fault.

But the comments posted above seem to imply that everyone is gonna dump the bike on their own.  To me "crashing" means wiping out while taking a corner too fast, or being unable to stop cuz you're going too fast.  Things of that nature.  "Crashing" is your own fault.

I'll stand by what I said above with a small addition.  While anyone could get caught up in an accident and so should be prepred (helmet & full leathers is optimal) there's no reason someone who's in control of their bike and their abilities should crash on their own.

Crashing is your own fault?

Where do you live? Cos if there's a stretch of road on the planet where a car, truck, bus, nuther bike, sheep, dog or kangaroo isnt gonna jump out in front of ya some time or another, then I wanna know about it.

Try riding in London (GB) traffic.

Crashing happens, sometimes it aint your fault.  If you've been through a couple of slides ok then next time you come around a bend and find a truck blocking the road you have a choice:  Try and break and hit the thing head on or lay the bike on it's side and slide to a halt early.

Believe me, I know....and bailing out was definately the better option cos I know it doesnt hurt (unless you're in a T shirt).  Slamming into truck would prolly hurt but thankfully I didnt find out.

Did you read what I wrote?  Certainly there are unaviodable accidents, but there's nothing that guarantees you're gonna get in one of those.

I'm talking about wiping out on your own because you've gone too hot into a corner and can't hold your line.  Things like that.  That's just someone getting in over their skill level, and doesn't have to happen if the rider is responsible.

D
