Title: Making the Switch
Post by: Taiaha on June 03, 2002, 01:38:47 PM
Hi all.  I'm about to get a cable modem, and I wanted to know a) if there are any issues about running AH from behind a firewall, and b) what program you all would recommend for security.  Read Joc's post on his new pc and saw that some of you weren't all that keen on Zone Alarm.  Any other recommendations?

If you get a firewall you will just need to give Aces High full access in and out in the settings of the firewall. depending on what firewall you have will depend on how to do this. Zone Alarm and Norton are a few of the most popular ones.

You might also consider going the hardware firewall/router path.  Mine is a Linksys (http://www.linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=23&prid=20) with which I have zero trouble.  Expect to pay around $80.00 or so.  IMHO it is money well spent.

The other advantage of the firewall/router is that you can connect more than one computer to the internet without needing to pay your cable ISP addition connections.  (Since you pay, at least in the case of ATTBI, for each IP addresse in use.)

Setting up the router is very easy provided you read the short manual ahead of time and follow the instructions on obtaining the fully qualified domain names for your ISP's mail and news servers.
