Title: POLL : Who of you guys flies in RL
Post by: Duckwing6 on August 31, 2000, 03:51:00 AM
the BBs is kindda boring lately .. too much trolling and whining ..

SO !

another POLL (don't cha just love them ??)

here it goes:

I have a PPL / ME / Glider rating  and i'm working on my CPL / IFR right now

I fly Gliders for aerobatics (about 20 different types including a LO100)

I do glider towing with a Pa18 Super Cub and a Robin Remorquer DR400, first i did it to get hours and now because it's fun and it gives you a goal for your flying .. not just the 60$ Coffee 1 hour to the next field kindda flying (which would be 200$ here anyways)

Got roughly 450 hours total time and about 2300 flights

now you !

All I've had is an hour lesson.... actually the first time I had ever been up in the air and I was so pleased that my instructor let me do everything first time round!!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)  A wonderful feeling!

Seriously, I'd love to learn but it's all down to money!  Hey, anyone in UK want a passenger??   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I grew up around airplanes, my dad flew them in the interior of Brasil. Have a lot of hours there.

I accumulated about 15 hours of instruction in 152's and an Aeronca Champ but never solo'd. Chose to have a family instead of a ticket, couldn't (and still can't) afford both so I fly my puter instead  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

I learned in Gliders at the Yorkshire Gliding Club - Trained in Blanik and K21 then soloed in K8, Astir and another higher performance one I can't remember.

Did my PPL in the States in the usual 150 / 152 and got about 100hrs in - Eastern North Carolina has to be the easiest place to learn - just beautiful and very quiet.

Flown an Airship for about an hour (used to be a ground eng ) and jump seated Concorde (brother is pilot  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) )

Moved back to England 10 years ago and haven't flown since - toooooo expensive - now AH fills the gap.

When I was 15, I washed and waxed planes at a small airport for flight time. Soloed on my 16th birthday (flunked my drivers test that day) and had my private ticket on my 17th birthday.

I have logged about 450+ hours in single engine, 25 hours in light twins and 8 hour in hot air balloon.

Now, I get paid to hang around the airport.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) Guess i'm a professional airport bum.

400 plus hrs. in many different Cessna's. I own a '68 172I (factory float kit installed)with a 220hp Franklin and constant speed seaplane prop. In winter on wheels, summer Edo 2440 floats.

When I used to work on small a/c, I got to fly 207's, 208 Caravan on wheels and amphip floats (got some of my float instruction in a 208 on amphips), DHC-2 Turbo Beaver (Alaska Magnum conversion) on amphip floats, but only got to taxi our DHC-6 Twin Otters. Of course I got my training in 150's and 152's. No tail dragger time yet tho.

Fly for 6 months, then none for 6 :-( (money, busy work schedule).
Fly PA-38 Tomahawk. 40 hours at the moment - last flight was first instrument instruction flight. Outstanding - 45 mins continuous right up to landing just following instructor's commands. Just the best feeling. Can't wait to start cross-country.

I own, maintain and fly a Piper Comanche. Complex bird (retract and constant speed prop) that I have collected over 250 hours in. I had 100 plus hours in, Tomahawk, Cessna 150, 172 and 152 prior to te Comanche.
I also have about 15 to 20 hours in the F16 simulator (real one not the computer game) thanks to the Air Guard and my last job.

St Santa, you don't have to be spoiled, you just have to be determined enough to follow your dream. I had to work hard to get his bird and all my flight time. I saved money for over 10 years before looking for my own plane. No one gave ANY of it to me. If you want it, make the decision and DO IT. Oh and stop whining about it!    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Starting flight training in the C172 3 years ago, guy sold the plane last year so I've been accumulating hours in the C150's lately. Lamer charged dang near as much for the 172, so nobody rented and he couldn't afford insurance  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif) so I haven't been able to fly much. (the cheapest planes to fly  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) ) I fly Katana when I can afford it.

Also have some dual time in the Baron, King Air, and Tiger (not anything formal)

'bout 200 hours.

And I've had the pleasure of nearly being blown backwards by taxing a 172 behind a B-17.

I got a PPL (Microlights) last June. Went solo after 5 hours of tuition with WB (then) heavily responsible for early solo. It does help if you use stick/rudders combo for your AH, ignore anyone who says otherwise (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

35 hours of P1 so far, fly 3-axis AX3 from Kemble airfield (over a mile runway, can take anything up to 747 - I guess I can probably take off/land across the runway (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)).

Started on Cessnas as a part of my "I need 100 hours to start an AFI course" routine. Got told off for my "hop in the air" take offs ("...properly trimmed aircraft will take off without any input from a pilot...blah-blah-blah..."). Pain in the a***e is that I'd have to re-sit all 5 papers again *sniff* and, of course, the cost of training...

Salivating over Jabiru right now. Who needs Cessnas when this little beauty is available (albeit sligtly out of reach at ~£28K factory built (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif))? Economy cruising at 95 kts using 6-8 liters of avgas an hour? 600 miles range... Spare 20 grand anyone? *drool* (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I logged about 4 hours in the space shuttle  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)  Well, the space shuttle sim at N.A.S.A., you know the big 20ft tall sim that moves in all axis' and is controlled by a room full of SGI computers  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Won it at the '97 WB con,  THNX HT AND PYRO! and OTT2 and NASA  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)  I actualy landed that BUFF too, only 50' left of center and .6'/sec too fast, not bad after a 1/2 bottle of tequila  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/rolleyes.gif)

They lauched us (in the vertical position  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) was sitting on my back) and at a certain altitude we had an "emergency" and had to RTB. Talk about a glide path,  we started at 200,000 at about 16,000 mph did a HUGE S-turn then I just kept the shuttle in the diamond, in the HUD, and set her down nice and easy.  The landing flare was the hardest part, that and realizing what toe brakes were hehe.

2nd attempt was just like the first, I'm on the glide path and lined up perfect with the center of the runway. Except this time i hear laughing , in my headset (NASA headsets ROCK!) Beep, giggle giggle, Beep.  All of a sudden the nose of the shuttle is vearing off to the right, I was looking at the runway through the left quarter panel window.  I kicked full left rudder and set it down, only when I let go of the rudder the shuttle veared off the runway and crashed.  They gave me a 60mph crosswind at 100 ft.  that's why they were laughing.

I know that's not "real" flight, but that damned thing moved and it felt "real" minus the G forces. And the thing MOVED!  BIGTIME! was realy an awesome experiece. I'll bring pictures to the CON...

Got my license 3 months ago..so far (due to job changes) I've only managed 5 hours on a Beagle Pup and 2 hours in a Tiger Moth.
Looking to buy a plane with a couple of friends at the beginning of next year..in the moment the choice is between a Yak52, Cap10B and a Pitts S2(A or B).
Would prefer the Yak, but the Cap10 is probably the more sensible choice  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif). (360HP radial uses just a tad more fuel than a 170HP lycoming :P)

This winter I decided I'd learn to fly no matter what, so I started learning to fly gliders. Right now I'm more than halfway to my license, with 8 (!) hours, most in the ASK-21, but lately in the Bergfalke III (which has a bit of that WW2 feel to it anyway  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

Heya,

16 hours in Grumman Lynx and Cheeta I believe. Been 15yrs since I took a lesson though. But I still have my log book so I'm sure about the hours. Been meaning to get back to that one of these day's. Also used to be an Avionics tech in the USAF on C-141B Starlifters back in the day.

BTW, do your hours expire after a while or can I count those towards my license?

Vyper, try not to rub it in ok. Do you ever have a bad day at work when your an F-16 Jockey(except when you auger)? I always wondered that when I see those guy's buzzing around over my head. Are they thinking,
Jeez, I'd really like to be sitting in an air conditioned office right now, pushing stacks of paper accross my desk. Just thought I'd ask.

Hello all   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
I have a very short aviation career so far:
French TT, US Private/Commercial/Instrument/CFI/CFII/Multi.
About 350h and counting, with 5 students trying to kill me every day   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

(last week, my brand new private student chopped the mixture instead of the throttle in final   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)) I love them all still   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Dammo.. no license here. But I have about 30 touch 'n go's; and about 50 hours transit stick time in a Piper Dakota. (Cherokee on steroids)

My boss has the plane and was always naggin me about going places. Sadly the first few times we were up; I was less than impressed with his skills (he wuz a newbie) and I was less than charmed by sittin there with my feet tucked back and my arms crossed. Next time he asked me up I said "OK; butcha gotta let me fly the damn thing.. sittin there lettin my bellybutton pinch the seat is puttin a crimp on my butt muscles, and yer seat's not too happy either".

Now my boss and I have been building and flying R/C since we were kids, and I always did kick his bellybutton in pattern and sport aerobatic contests, (not to mention WB's) so I had no qualms about tryin out his Dakota... if he'd let me. Needless to say, he was a bit reluctant till I made a suggestion...

He took me up with a close mutual R/C friend who's a CFI (boss stayed in the back for this ride) and he let me feel the plane out, and shortly I was shootin TnG's at a unused strip. The guy pronounced me a 'natural' after a coupla hours of gradually increasing degree of difficulty tasks and we even did some unatural attitude recovery stuff. We all had a blast, the boss got some great instruction on crisis management. The only thing I find intimidating in that cockpit nowdays is the freakin radios and the boss has a decent right seat relief pilot for the long hauls  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Only when i smoke sometimes DW  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Just kidding u make me jelous. it costs to much money here to get a licence what it costs to maintain ur licence. Also our airspace is very restricted also can't make much fun here.

Really had some serious toughts on it.

Offcourse there is a way when u really want to.
So i hope to see myself on a glider sometime.

In reallife i jumped 8 times parachute when i was in service. I took over steer and flown a piper bonzana over my house and around even tracked a ils beam  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) only once on a fortunated occasion. To bad he (the pilot)wanted to land himself again. It was a very enjoyable 15 minutes.

Got that occasion because my father works on an airfield(mechanic)

Luckily we have flightsims these days where u can do thing what in reallife costs u ur flyinglicense  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) .. and more probably ur life too err.

Hello!

Got 200+ hours to date, would have more but the damn rental is either in use by a student, or in the shop being fixed cuz of a student  (we had a kid bounce the nose wheel so hard that the firewall mount to the nose wheel strut was buckled.  We tease the kid now, asking he use the other 2 wheels too)

So, weary of renting and wanting to fly faster stuff, I bought a partially complete BD-5T (turbine) kit.  I'm no builder, so its going off to Oregon in a few months to have engine, electronics and all those other GOODIES put in.  Not sure the paint job yet, leaning towards a Blue Angels colors but I change my mind almost daily.

Big challenge is getting training in high performance aircraft and parachuting lessons, in case I ever have to landing without her   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Here's a shot of me and my BD-5.  Wings are off since its easier to work on the cockpit with em off.

Currently working up to sportsman aerobatics competition in the Decathlon (shown below), but I will move to Germany this summer and probably won't be able to continue.

I've slightly more than 200 hours each in Rotorcraft (R-22, Enstrom) and SEL planes (C172). PPL only. Instrument, MEL someday when I find that rich woman to take care of me.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I got my rotorcraft ticket first, because I knew I wanted to do both, and had heard from some CFIs that airplane pilots had some really bad habits in helicopters.
But that goes both ways, too. 60 kts sure did seem awful damn fast for landing an aircraft! Although there is this helicopter maneuver called "running takeoff/landing"... AH1G can appreciate that I bet <S>. Lucky dog, I'd love to fly the loach someday.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Vyper:

I'm up here in Bangor, and we have KC-135s up here.  I was in the Air Guard for a few years here and not that long ago, we had 2 or 3 F-16s here that would scramble when the Over the Horizon Radar would pick up a inexplained dot.  If I recall, you guys scrambled a few times and intercepted some Russian bombers well off the coast.  If memory serves, the Cape Cod ANG F-15s replaced you guys and also escorted a few Russian bombers, probing our defenses, away.

For what its worth, you guys gave the better show when you guys returned to base and burned off the rest of your gas   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

DuckWing:  I think the BD-5 you mention is pictured on www.bd-micro.com (http://www.bd-micro.com)  website (they make the BD-5 kits).  If I recall the news from a few months back, I beleive they hold the speed record for a recip aircraft under 400 pounds.  Dont quote me, I'll have to research it.

Here is my experience as a pilot:  An attractive blonde woman I met said she had a Beech 18 and she would teach me to fly it.

It sounded fun to me and I always wanted to be a pilot, so we went to the airport the very next evening.  We took off and flew out over the desert.  She showed me how the autopilot worked and then she suddenly took off all her clothes.  I didn't know what to think about this.  She said she was the 'captain' of the ship and ordered me to get naked.  Well, what could I say?

She said this was part of learning to fly and I might as well get used to it.

So I got naked and she got me onto the couch just behind the cockpit door.  Actually, it wasn't too bad.  We thrashed around there for awhile and she worked me over pretty good.  Every now and then she'd get up and go to the cockpit to 'check on the bird,' whatever that means.  She always came right back.

After some time, I was wiped out.  She said I could fly the thing back to the airport and we sat there naked in the cockpit with her letting me steer the airplane.  I had no idea what I was doing.  On top of that, I looked like a boiled chicken and felt like a gutted snowbird.

She said that is the way all real pilots learn to fly and I might as well get used to it.  She said this was 'real aviation.'  She had beautiful breasts...real hummers if you know what I mean.  Not a bad butt, either.

I don't know how in the hell you pilots ever learned to fly an airplane in those conditions.  My hat is off to all of you.

As for me, I got out of 'aviation.'  I talked her into going to Hawaii on one of those big airliners and it was a lot easier.  Of course the flight attendants didn't like her (my flight instructor) because she was such a knockout and the airline food sucked.  But that is another story.

Hi Thunder!
Yes, here is one:

I man drove the lav service truck to the side of an airplane and connected the hose.  As the pump was sucking waste out of the jet, the hose broke and dumped raw sewage all over him.

The horrified ramp manager told him to take the day off.

At home, his wife was aghast and said, "Why don't you quit that terrible job?"

He stood there, covered in toejam, and said,
"What?  Get out of aviation?"

I have a dream though. I want a Catalina for a flying home one day, fly around the globe and write a book about it. Hows that?  :)

Good to hear things are coming along for you, Cit.  :)

Now I'm picking back up on my flying. I work for a company that charters Lear flights (you gotta be rich). Some of what we do is covered by confidentiality, but we also assist in organ donations, emergency medical flights (Mercy Angel), and the like. It's going to take another three months before I advance to PIC. So, I have to ask where you are taking your training (what are you going to do when you finish)? I have always had great disdane for commercial airlines (giant cattle cars), and I am looking forward to catering to the rich and famous (not to mention getting paid for flying a Lear).

There is a down side to all of this, though. I do get to fly a bunch (average 150 hours/month once I'm finished), and I get to go to school and learn aviation maintenance (AI), but it is seriously jeapardizing my flight sim time.  :(

Hangtime, we have to get together and do some pattern flying.   ;) I got over 50k hours there!    :D

For all of you guys that would love to own a warbird; I visited a field up north where they do a lot of high dollar engine maintenance.  The owner related to me several tales of executives offering up Mustangs in exchange for maintenance. The best acquisition so far? A P51H from Canada that exchanged hands for a $7,500 bill. Now, he's got his eyes open for me. Anything under $50k. My explanantion was that I intend to build a squadron.

Soaringplanes mainly
Took lessons in K7 and Puchacz (i think pzl plane made in poland)
I fly solo on Junior, going to Astir after this.

Flew a soaringplane with engine once, didn't like the smell of gas in the cockpit. Climbed like a cow as well, it only had a VW 1.6 engine. Same as the one a VW golf  :)

Flew in a Sedberg once, this soaringplane is huge. I think it was used before and during WW2 to train pilots in the basics of flying.
It has an open cockpit, the two pilots sit next to each other.
This was the best plane i ever flew in, it stalled at 65km/h or so, very gentle. It climbed like toejam, and fell like a rock.
It steered like a truck, i liked that, it was very smooth.

Cool huh  :)

Greetings,

JG5FaBi.

I once talked to a Sgt. Murphy (not Audie; Audie is a relative of mine on the Killion side I just learned tonight   ;)). Sgt. Murphy flew gliders in WWII. He weighed no more then 100 lbs. at his heaviest point. The U.S. chose featherweight pilots so they could carry more payload. I find that interesting.
