Title: My 1st real sortie in AH ;)
Post by: Red Ant on June 08, 2002, 05:02:16 AM
So I finally decide to give AH a fair shake, put away all my WB preconceptions & just try to have fun :) Fly a couple of LA-7 sorties last 3 days, get a few kills, no real fights tho - too late on a weeknight, i guess. LA-7 seems REALLY uber. So tonight I log on, find a pretty big fight, & decide to try a Yak9U. After all, my grandpa flew those :) So I roll one, get some alt, get a kill. Then i get bounced by an F6F - now I'm low over a capped field, but i got some E in my pocket. So i just scissor & roll and he blows right over me like a rocket. Then he proceeds to dump all his E on a reversal and i shoot him :)

Next thing i know, a preson who shall for now remain nameless, but whose callsign i'm familiar with from this board, hits me with

"You ***hole, why dont you fly a real plane and not that UFO POS, etc, etc..."

so i have some questions :)

1) Isn't this the "All Uber - All The Time" arena? I thought everyone was in an uberplane ;)

2) Is this how newbies are generally greeted in the MA?

3) Is the Yak9T also considered "Uber", or just the 9U? How bout La-5FN?

4) Are we gettin' a P39 any time soon? ;)

Unfortunately for you , you simply ran into one of the growing number of whining dictators that I myself have noticed since returning to the game after an absence.

1. Fly what you want.
2. Fly it anyway you want to.
3. Kill them and all their little whiney friends anyway you can.
4. Squelch.

Welcome to Aces High S!

Welcome to AH RedAnt!

For a new kind of less congested whining, try the CT arena.  Historical match-ups are the thing in there, so there's a bit less whining about player plane choice.

At least I almost never see a single person there.

Redant,

take my advice.  shreck em.  Fly what you want how you want and any numpty who falls for a rope a dope, etc, gets what he deserved.

Try the command  .squelch 1   and tada.....no more grey text.

However, the Yak-9x isnt regarded as uber......not really anyway.  Avoid the N1k, LA7 and some spits if ya dont wanna be called a dweeb........or fly a Spit Mk I and point it out to everyone you shoot down.  :D

The Yak-9T and U are wondeful rides! I prefer the "one shot pop wonder power" of the 9T myself :)

Hi Redant!Great to see you here. When is Avin coming over?:D

The CT is great and better than the main when enough people are on.

The LA7 is one of the better planes in A/H but can be killed easy enough, but is a handful with a good pilot. The LA5 is a good plane here also but just won't run down many planes. It's a great base defense plane with a little alt.

My favorite plane here is the Yak9u.Fly it a little bit and you can form your own opinion but I bet you like it.;) Most fun plane to fly in my opinion.and it scissors like nothing else!Just watch your fuel gauge. The 9t has the armament you prefer:D  but is slower and doesn't accelerate as well it seems.

BTW Rook is a good country to start in.

Heya Anton, glad to see you!

In answer to your questions:

1) Yes.
2) Yes.
3) Yes and Yes.
 and
4) P-39s are for wimps, real mean fly P-40s so quit whining.

And did you remember to bring Avin?

hiya redant..  I can honestly say that I don't recall anyone ever berating me about my plane choice.  Heck, In WB I recall people whining about one or another plane every set...  I did myself.

You did happen to pick a couple of the current whipping boys tho for plane choice .   You should probly try a nik or a spit tho for now so as not to offend anyone.

Really, red... just have a god time and don't worry about it.

Hey Redant...you just ran into an idiot, plain and simple.  It wouldn't matter what plane you were flying, as long as you dare to kill a few certain pile-its you are destined to be whined at on the open channel.  Do what I do - egg 'em on, and see if you can really make 'em cry :)

Fly whatever brings you the most fun, and if whiney idiots start to bother ya too much, type ".squelch 1", and you won't hear anyone on the main channel.  Or, you can just squelch them individually.

SOB

PS...Don't forget to get their chutes after they bail.  They really like that too!  :D

Red Ant,

It is too bad you ran into a jeck your first time out.  I never get messages about the plane I fly.  Yes, once in awhile I do fly the La-7 or N1K2.  Perhaps I do, but I dont see the message buffer that much.  Too busy dying.  :)

Fly whatever you want and fly Knights and you'll be OK.  ;)

LOL! It had to be Mandoble ;) He's the only one I know who complains that the Yak-9U is a "UFO" But I have no clue why he royal luftwaffe highness was in a F6F  (just razzing you Mando :p).

RedAnt, don't let it bother you. Fly what you want and enjoy it.  And FYI none of the Yak's are considered "uber" by the community as a whole.

And why would you want a stinking P-39??? ;) The Yak-9T is actually a real Russian bird, with a much better gun and more manueverable too boot. Now if you want to talk about a P-63.... well then I'm with yah !! :)

Good to see you giving AH a fair shot!

ruh roh. The famous redant. Used to kick my arse royally in WB.

Go beyond those types redant. Back when we were paying $200.00 plus a month to do this, we didn't fork that kinda money over to trash talk. Things have changed. If it's not present in WB now, it will.

Can't even use the argument, "using daddy's credit card"? anymore, lol.

Welcome to AH redant.

BTW, bet ya can't whoop me as easy now. :D

Eheeheh welcome aboard RedAnt. 8)

This game kicks ass. Even lazs is fun in this game. 8)

Those Yaks are a ton of fun. Remember 'Night of the Big bellybutton Cannon' in WB? Same deal with the 37mm armed Yak. 8)

The only reason the guy got pissed at you was because he was embarrased. Getting low and slow witha Yak? 8)

See you up there,

Yeah, I remember my second sortie in WB (feb 99).  (The first one I got a maneuver kill on Cabby)  I was somehow in a hawg, separated and behind enemy lines.  On the deck and speeding home, I pass about 7 miles south of an enemy base.  That's when I see this P39 coming my way.

So to answer one of your questions redant, no, that's not how newbies are treated in AH.  Newbies are shot down without mercy).

As far as Yak-9s being uber -- I haven't heard anyone claim that.  You must have done a damn good job of selling that bird.

I've never been accused of flying an ueber plane, but such accusations are related to actually killing people with them.
If you get shot down all the time, you generally won't get so much negativity.

Post by: MrRiplEy[H] on June 08, 2002, 10:50:45 AM
I did hear someone shouting on ch1 today claiming yak9 uber..

The flight characteristics are quite uber, spitlevel, but the very limited ammo load effectively stops nonskilled players of using it properly. You have to go in close if you want to make a multiple kill sortie in a yak. If it had 3-4x ammo and newbies could turn it and spray'n pray.. It would be quite uber IMO.
Title: My 1st real sortie in AH ;)
Post by: AKDejaVu on June 08, 2002, 11:00:02 AM
Someone in an F6F-5 had position and e on a Yak-9 and lost?  I don't believe it. ;)

Yaks are far from "spit-like" with their handling capabilities.  They roll well and turn with the F4u.  Their main advantage is their WEP-less speed abilities.  Er.. not "their".. but they Yak-9u's speed.  You can hang with a P-51 at sea level and wait for his WEP to run out.. then you have an edge in virtually every other category.

Spits are tough because the Yak can't really outmaneuver them... but a Yak with E can take snapshots from here to eternity (eternity being until his ammo runs out).

The Yak is a great ride... uber its not.  Not even close.  It takes more discipline than most in the arena even come close to exibiting.

BTW... you'll find there are a handfull of people that will feel the need to fire up ch. 1 every time they are killed.  "Nice ram" or "Nice HO" or "You were in a much better plane than I" excuses will be their battlecry from their chute.  I actually find it quite funny.

The best thing for this game would be a 2 minute cool down period.  After you die you have 120 seconds where in you are not able to transmit on channel 1.  The amount of whining would be cut in half.

Welcome to Aces High.

Redant was a challenge to fight in the P39.  He waxed my bellybutton royal more times than is fair to count.

Hope you WBs guys find AH enjoyable :)

Hint: This community is quite diversified having folks from lots of different heritage sims and a TON-O-DWEEBS to kick around.
Squelch channel 1 if it gets too annoying, I usually will and it really can make a difference ;)  Plus, just hook up with one of the old WBrs for serious questions.

Its an interesting time to try it because 1.10 should really close the era gap.

I've been flying the 9T and la5 almost exclusively this tour (because a squadmate has been ragging me bout my crappy hit percentage:)) and I am really enjoying the Yak. I don't think it's Uber in any way, apart from when the 37mm connects :)

Nice to have you here Redant - just remember to squelch channel 1 as soon as you login. Once I've squelched 1, I get a warm tingly feeling thinking about all the spent rage and anger that is being vented to an uncaring universe. :D

Hey Frodo. Like you, I love the Yak-9U. My two favorites for the MA are the 9U and the P-51B. Once a pilot masters the Yak-9U, he's nearly untouchable. As I have said before, I think that it's the most balanced fighter in the game. Not the best at anything, but its combination of attributes makes it extremely formidible in the hands of a good stick. Likewise for the P-51B.

My regards,

Yea the P-51B is my second ride of choice also.A little harder to fly than the yak.I like to fly it at 10-15k alt.,and it hides really well on the deck with it's green color. It is also a much cooler plane than the D model. :p

Hey Ant,

Sure it's different, no doubt about it the FM's are like chalk and cheese but not being a WWII pilot I have no idea whose closest to real life :)

I'm still working out which aircraft are faster than which and those that climb, zoom the best etc, so far it's been quite a learning curve, enjoyable but steep.

I simply love taking up a fully loaded P47, jaboing a city and then attacking supply trains with rockets and .50's, kinda feels realistic.
As does taking a full fuel load, grabbing alt and just cruising around  looking for "easy meat".

Thumbs up from me, have accounts in both and aim to keep it that way as I enjoy the S/L's and EMC's in WB's.

Thanks to both sims :)

and welcome Wipass, if its scenario's you enjoy most you might want to take a look at the TOD series and join a squad or ask to be a guest of a squad in this scenario series. It's much like the S3 events in WB which runs two nights a week one in US time and one in Euro friendly timezone.

Hey redant, and welcome.  Also a big fan of the Yak: underrated, but hardly a UFO!

No, that's not generally the way flight-capable newbies are treated, although I have noticed an increase (since I've been playing) in the impatience directed toward rank newbies who come on with questions like "How do I take off"--and maybe that's fair enough, although I think there are nicer ways of letting people down.

Frankly, I have no idea whether or not I've been criticized for what I fly, but I'm guessing probably so.  From very early on I've been squelching channel 1 because the trash talk bores me.  I need to know what my side is doing, and what my squaddies are doing--don't really give a toss about what my few victims or the many people who shoot me down have to say about the state of the universe.

That said, even your own side can get a bit much at times, and you may come to wish for the idea suggested in another thread, the .squelch littlenapoleons option!

Just fly, enjoy, it's a great community with the anal-retentives relatively few and far between.

This looks like a sensible discussion with some familiar faces and is sorta related to the topic. :)
I posted the following in the Help & Training section but maybe you guys could give some advice if you don't mind.

"Howdy

I'm new to AH, just came over from WB after 4 yrs, still have my WB account for now. AH really looks great and I really like all the nice features. But I've got a couple of questions.
First, is there anyway to minimize the gunshake when firing in a fighter, any fighter.? The combination of that and that crazy head bobble thing is killing my gunnery. Having a heck of a time getting and keeping a guns solution.
Btw I have force feedback for guns and weapons disabled so that should not be a problem.

Second, I'm using a MS Sidewinder FF joystick, the original version. Been tinkering with the settings some, but I'm still getting that"moving controls to rapidly" message and I'm struggling with the blackouts as well. Man I thought the blackouts in WB's were bad. lol

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Skyfoxx welcome aboard! It takes time to get used to the head movement and gun shake, not long but it is very different to Warbirds. I know you're probably shaking your head at that statement right now but give it a week or two and you won't notice it :)

As for the stick response have you tried altering the deadbands etc? Not really had much of a problem with blackouts to be honest but then most of the time I fly bombers which might explain things :D

Post by: Staga on June 10, 2002, 10:43:17 AM
After a week you don't notice that your head moves in a cockpit.

That another part is tougher: I did use MS FF Pro stick too but couldn't stand it 'cause every time I did use rudder I saw a text "Don't move your controls too rapidly". When looked Back to the rudder I saw it oscillating...
Back to old PrecPro.
