Title: Framerate changes in last 2 weeks
Post by: honda346 on June 10, 2002, 12:38:56 PM
I've never had any problems with frame rates until the past couple of weeks.  Does anyone know if anything is different on the server side? Map? Anything?

At first I thought it was just a bad internet connection as I saw some spiking into 300 via the ping tool.  But since I've done testing that shows I get the same issue with a stable connection below 200 all the time.

It will be fine for about the first 10 minutes I'm on and then it goes to 7-10 FPS suddenly and stays there until I log and reconnect.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I forgot to mention that this framerate stays low until I reboot my machine.  Simply disconnecting and re-connecting doesnt' help.  It's as if I'm swapping to hard drive and the memory isn't unloading when I quit the program.  Anyway... thanks.

oy Honda, framerate has absolutely NO relationship to connection quality in AH whatsoever!

If your performance has degraded recently I'd first start looking at your machine, and any changes that may have taken place (known to you or not)

Wasn't there a squad bitmap that had some issue with it that caused our framerates to drop like crazy a while back?  I'm thinking something along those lines... I've been running with the same machine at the same resolution for over a year and while I understand your saying look for changes known or unknown I really can't seem to find anything at this point...
Is there a way to run Aces with OpenGL so I could compare the two?  I've had success with that in other taxing programs like Nascar 2002 and IL-2 when the DirectX versions had framerate problems.

no ah is directx only

the squad bitmap thing... not that i know of.. it never affected me anyways.  There was an issue with gunsights which if they were the wrong size your framerate would drop to 1-2.

In your case its neither... u say its the same everytime... 10 mins?  screensaver enabled? anything set to go into suspend mode?
i am suspecting something is happening in the background.

so.. u haven't installed anything at all recently?
no new drivers?
FSAA on?

defragged lately?
low disk space?

I *think* I found the problem.  I had the W32.HLLW.Acebo virus and while I keep getting rid of it, it seems to come back.  In addition Norton caught the CIH virus also last night but that was after logging out of Aces.  I don't know if HiTech does virus scans or not but is it possible I could have gotten it from their servers?  Seems unlikely unless everyone is getting it... I have a feeling the earthlink routers/servers might be sending it because after doing some testing I found I got a virus while not loading anything but the dialup adapter.

So anyway, the framerate DOES get hit if you have a cpu intensive process transmitting data like crazy to the UK... that't the ip address I traced while it was running.

I don't get why it would start itself up after 10+ minutes running Aces though.  Maybe it was just attached to .exe files and it is just coincidence that I happen to be running Aces a lot lately.
Regards

Hey Honda

You wouldn't have got the virus from playing AH (at least the virus builders i don't think have found a way to that yet +)

You likely just picked it up with a download somewhere
glad to see its solved +)

Title: Ram
Post by: Doubledog100 on June 11, 2002, 05:31:22 PM
Sounds like you might be running low on ram? Download a free program Rambooster by JPulia. Set it by how much ram you have. Boost your ram before playing any games then close rambooster. This program works great. Don't run it while playing games.
