online? I mean download like AH? If its because of a key, heck, they can send ya that. It's no where to be found in my area and I was going to try the new version. Guess I could order it from somewhere but I'm an impatient sort. My daily prayer is "Lord give me patience...just give it to me now!"
Seems like they are cutting thier nose off to spite thier face,IMO.

prolly cause with all the patches its many hundred megs..candy for cable folks, but difficult for dial-up. if you are new to wwII online, get ready for disappointment and waiting...and waiting....
-
Well, the "boxed" game blew donkey nuts and so many people returned their copy they had to drop that stillborn from the shelf.
It's twitching ever so slightly... but the lack of life support means this ones gonna hit the grave in a year.
There's no way they can be getting any kind of a profit over there... I'm surprised people still advertise on that website.
In other words- I think you might be SOL except for mail order Apache... or you can prolly buy it off some other poor guy who bought it and couldn't return it but didn't use their CD key.
Check E-bay, you can prolly score a copy there for like 20 cents.. about what they should of sold it for in the first place. :)

When it first came out it was not available as a free download . You had to buy the box if you wanted to try it at all . In short, they wanted to make sure they had your money before you found out how bad it sucked .
Also they will make more money selling a box, and charging a monthly subscription fee. When the expansions come out i.e. pacific, eastern front, you will also have to buy those off the shelf .
That's pretty much the way all MMOG's are done, AH, WB and the rest of the not so massive OG's are the exception .

you can have mine for free..you will still need the patches from the site...

Hawk, when you pass it over to Apache, you have to contact WW2OL/PLAYNET and go through a toejamload of red tape to "transfer" your CDKEY ownership to him.
-
Tac, thanks for the tip,.. do you know if it matters that I never paid for the service? I got my copy on release day and played during the long free period.. then when they started charging I didn't play.
thanks

I have an extra copy I bought in the cheapo bin at Wal-Mart. Anyone that wants the key is welcome to it- and you can download the game from the CRS ftp site.

K did you ever use the key to the extra copy?

No problem with that I imagine so long as he gives you the logon info with which you could just change to suit yourself. What IS most important is that his handle wasn't "Blair" or any phonetical version of the same ;)

WWIIOL is boxed with Steel Beasts and 1 other game I forget at Wally World for $10.
-
Wally World? Wal-mart? I saw it at the local K-mart still selling for $39.99. thats crap, i'm not going to pay that just to try it out :) I want to find this $10 copy and give it a whirl.
-
Really?? I thought Steel Beasts was a good game

From the CD install, you can d/l version 0000164.exe about 97 megs, delete the CINE folder and usually good to launch. There will probably be a full install to 1.6.4 sometime. Europeans can buy a CD key needed to create an account from CRS..9.95 with 7 days free play. In the US, Strat First prolly prevents their doing that. A lot of ppl in WW2Ol will buy a boxed version and sell the keys for cost using Paypal or whatever for payment. I have no idea how much trouble it is to transfer a cd key, but hatch@playnet.com would be the one to start with.
CRS is not the publisher and has no control over the boxed version. They always made most of their money from the subscription and Strategy First the publisher got the lion share of the box proceeds.

Lion share being:
original release:
$10 to Strat First
$10 to Playnet
once it got remaindered, I imagine Playnet got out of the loop.
Um. I made these numbers up. Feel free not to believe them. After all, Mr. Great Pharoah, who am I?
Still, do the math: the initial run was for 100k copies. If they sold all those with no returns, they'd make a million. Now calculate what it costs to run a software company with 35 people for 2 years development time. Doesn't begin to pay the rent, eh?
-
Like Octavious I too would pick the box up for $10 to give it another whirl.
I found one edition of the three-fer at Walmart for $20 but felt that was too much still. For example for $20 I can buy WWIIO which quite possibly will end up being a drink coaster, OR....
... for a dollar fifty LESS I could buy an autographed copy of "Doorknob 52" (includes two signed 8x10 photographs; one of Arnold in the cockpit of his P-38 and one with his crew chief) from the author himself :)
Now a free download with a one or two week trial and a $10/mo subscription would work just about ALL the time and for everyone. And even then I'd much rather have a prepay option (via a check or money order) as I've read of the atrocious billing problems players have had with CRS/Playnet and I'm extremely leary of giviing them my credit card info. Problems that make iEN look like they have thier act together.

Thanks my friend. Can you email me at bkapache@sc.rr.com?
-
I stand corrected K West. It might in fact be $20, I really thought it was the $9.99 super Wally World game set. You know what the 3rd one is?
I think Mitsu used some sounds from Steel Beasts, so i downloaded the demo. I couldn't get over the graphics, but other than that, I'll be first in line at Electronics Boutique to get Steel Beasts 2. They do a WWII sim, there goes the tan plan for sure.
WWIIOL stole $40 from me, and I ain't happy. But I knew it going in and blame me. When it gets good, I'll sign up.
Still, they are pretty much bastards. Heh, can't hate them for that, maybe my $40 helped.

>>When the expansions come out i.e. pacific, eastern front, you will also have to buy those off the shelf . <<
don't hold your breath waiting for those. in 1 year, they've added 1 plane, 1 tank, 1 truck, and 1 AA gun for blitzkrieg.
there's a better game coming out soon - 'Battlefield 1942'
i give the rats about a year before they go el-foldo.
-
Roger that Creamo. I think some time ago Bestbuy, ChumpUSA and Staples had the fire sale versions for $10 ea. I could never find one when I went in any of those however. If the free re-trial offer impresses me I might go real crazy and splurge for the one $20 box I can find near here.

kg45..might want to get your facts straight....
they have added since release....Blen Mark I and Mark IV, Stug IV, some PZ 4, 110, 111,Matida, 2 aaa guns, Stouma French Tank,H75,Sapper,Laffy French Truck and proabably some I have missed. Adding vehicles with complete damage models and physics takes some time.
No one knows the business model concerning theaters..the plan was to build North Africa Med, which would use many of the exisiting vehicles, probably a faster ground, sea map for fps, since desert and sea have fewer polys and would be a free d/l. This would be the first addon. Also talk of CBI being the first one.

Sorry, was busy today. The e-mail is sent, download the game and plug in the key I sent you when you log in. Assuming my box wasn't a return to Wal-Mart you should be good to go.
-
Thank you very much Kieran!
-
Kieren? Apache just needs to d/l it and use your key? Where is this possible? I've been looking for a few days with no avail. I just want to try the offline mode as Beefcake did. I downloaded it during that free trial or whatever a few months ago but it was deleted. Help?
-
Kieran, consider that key used. I registered successfully. If you want $ for this, let me know and I'll have Octavius pay for it. :)

har!!! :p
Thanks apache, I just download all that crap?
-
Consider it a small token of gratitude for all the nights you saved my hide. S!

If you want to play offline and look around(remember fps are much faster offline) you can go to ftp:/downloads.wwiionline.com
and grab..setup155.exe a full install. You can then grab the file that is wwiionline0000000(when you expand in properties it will be 1.64) It is 97 meg....I will find out if they have created a full install to 1.64 to save some d/l. I know they will have one when they do the 2 week freebie thing, so ppl wont have to d/l 200megs to try it out. :)
-
uh.. I'm only seeing two files:
wwiiol0000001640.exe
wwiiol0163001640.exe
