I'm sure most of you old bastiges (30+!!)have faced that statement. So, how do you usually excuse your "playing"?
Mine goes like:
1. it's not game, it's SIMULATOR!
2. Learning curve is HUGE!
2. Flyers average age is wayyyy over 30! (yep yep, i know) :rolleyes:
3. It's good way to get off all those work things from my mind...
..and so on. Now above "excuses" are getting old so come give some new ones!

I’d tell them to diddly off frankly.
I could be gambling, screwing potatos, throwing $20's at half naked squeakes to the amount of $150 a hour, or getting a DUI.
Wait, besides the gambling, who are we explaining this to?
We are saints avoiding the rest via staying at home playing AH. Right? YES.
And why are they asking these stupid questions with dishes and vacuuming to do? Answer, cuz they are stupid and don't know better. Thay almost WANT you to go get potatos and DUI's. See? AH = GOOD!

Well thats just it, us 30+ are set, got the career, the wife, kids getting the hell out of the way... time to spend that well earned leisure time.
The real question is.. what are you 30- punks doing wasting all you're time playing a game? Get to the library & study, put in those extra hours at work for a promotion, raise that toddler, get cracking man you can't goof off! You gotta life to build.

I use AH play as a weapon against boredome in the office. If someone comes into my office and starts to tell me about the problems he/she is having with another co-worker, I start telling them all about what I did playing AH the night before. They leave almost immediately.
I'm not ashamed I play a video game. I don't believe it makes me any more/less in touch with anything. I simply enjoy doing it. It kinda reminds me of something I used to do in highschool.

I use to have a costly habit which changed my life. It was go to my favorite and local airport, rent an airplane or use my own(big $$), bore holes through the sky, land, pay dearly, hangout at friends or local EAA chapter hanger until I was late for dinner, finally getting home to be squeaked at, eat cold food, work in the garage on my own airplane, fighting with the ex until I fell asleep dreaming of the next time I could do it all over again.....UNTIL THE DIVORCE!! I am now remarried to the finest woman on earth, and I will never make that same uncontrollable habit of allowing airplanes to rule my life again.....and I don't give a rat's bellybutton who says an old man plays a video games(don't knock it, until you try it), and for that matter I don't give a rat's bellybutton what anyone says. I have a good time talking to my Squaddie's over Roger Wilco.....having such a great time laughing and carrying on, blowing a virtual enemy plane out of the sky, and it's all within my own house.....No driving drunk, no wife squeaking, no dollar give-aways at the local ballet, and ..... I'm always on time for dinner.. :D

I am over 30, hell I am almost 50. That means I am master of my own destiny and don't HAVE to explain how I spend my time. I'm semi retired so if anyone doesn't like how I spend my time they are cordially invited to HO a semi on the freeway with a yugo and clear out the gene pool.
I also fly real planes, work on real planes and spend a good amount of time at 2 different airports. As to explanations.... it IS, after all, MY time to use as I see fit.

Also, hint for younger pilots....
Use similar approach to doing laundry, ironing, cooking dinner and doing dishes.
All you have to do is burn holes in her stuff, burn a couple of dinners, put to many clothes in washer and back it up a couple of times and she says.... Let me do it...you guys are worthless! At that point she just wants you in the computer room playing Aces High and she's happy! Don't you younger guys look forward to getting old! :D

Playing stuff like WW2 combat sims encourages and develops the following skills:
- teamwork
- interpersonal communication
- hand-eye coordination
- problem-solving
- planning (esp. if a buff pilot)
- leadership & delegation (if a CO or FL)
It also helps keep me sane, is fun, and anybody trying to tell a heavily-armed* middle-aged woman what to do with her time must be mad! <g>
As for partners:
- it's cheaper than (other hobby that interests you), dear
- never makes me late for dinner, dear
- at least you know I'm not chasing other men/women, dear - well, only in this A6M, & that doesnt count..
- you want to ...? Oh! Hang on... "Red leader, engine failure, I'm bailing out, byeeeee!" <g>

Why do I fly this sim? It appeals to the 14 year old in me that likes to fly planes and blow toejam up. Who am I kidding here? It appeals the the 33 year old in me who likes to fly planes and blow toejam up ;)

I think a lot of people are afraid to be childish. Christ, we spend enough time doing adult stuff. Computer games are great, now Im 40 I can afford the gear so stuff it! Aces High is what I've waited all my life for. Also I love playing with the kid's lego etc too. Have you seem Lego Mindstorms, where you programme a robot on your PC. Im getting that for Christmas. Stuff the kids! Another thing, my kids have their own PC. No one gets to touch mine!
Be a kid! You'll be dead soon enough (and I mean DEAD, not just pasted by Ammo again!)
A little moral tho. I love my family and I find if I give them the time, they don't grudge me playing Aces High.

Agreed: the key to a good life is lots of small laughs and remaining a child at heart.
I start worrying when I think that jumping into small pools of water isn't what it used to be :)
AH is my current alias for jumping into small pools of water, that and some other stuff.
As children, happiness was ever present, no worries, carpe diem in the true sense of the word. It's a quality I value higher than pure analytical intellect.
Childlike, not childish :)

I'm almost 36 and will NEVER "grow up".. :)If anyone prods me about wasting my life in front of a computer screen,I ask them how they did last month in the Toronto Marathon,or how many times did you play The El'Mocombo before it was closed for good,or what's the biggest fish you've caught this year,or what R/C plane are you currently flying at your local club..or the best comeback.."it's better than watching FRIENDS re-runs".. :)

I've always been interested in WWI and WWII aviation. When I first saw LucasArts's Their Finest Hour in a computer store, I KNEW what I was going to be doing with MY computer - although I had to wait until Hellcats over the Pacific came out since I had a Mac SE/30 at the time :(.

Well, most people don't say anything about it. My wife on the otherhand has taken almost 5 years to realize what I tell her about it.
"Well, I could be out at the bar with the guys!"
Fact is, we all have to have some sort of fun or we end up acting like Osama bent Dick.
Other wise, I just tell them diddly off. ;)

Yep, childlike (as against childish) about sums it up for me, too. Never did lose my sense of wonder at the universe around me nor stop finding things that make me want to yell "WHEEEEEE!!!" fun.

The guys at work are always asking me why I'm online so much playing games. Now keep in mind these are the same guys who come to work hung over and squeaking about how there wife is upset with them for coming home late again. Or are going through a divorce.
I just smile and tell them my wife knows where I'm at and has grown to become attatch to staring at the back of my head :D
Now my latest thing is my wife instead of saying "Honey can you come here for a second" to saying "Honey when you land after that sortie I need your help with something".
Life is good! :D

Hehe! Very good post, Esme - and completely agreed! Looking forward to seeing you in the game, especially now that Air Warrior is officially dead on 7 December.... :( I will miss Air Warrior, but at least it is good to see so many familiar, as well as new faces, in Aces High! :D
