I read this article today in the SF Chronicle:
Subaru rabbit ad makes activists hopping mad (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2002/06/12/BU211942.DTL&type=business)
This is just stupid. Protesting over rabbits, can a person get any shollower? This is the epitome of the horrendous "Save it because its cute, let it dies if it ain't" mentality of too meny of the animal rights activists (and I know how most of you feel about them already). Rabbits breed like, well, rabbits. They ARE food. That is their fucntion in the ecosystem, breeding is their method of surviving despite being food.
I can uderstand when people go to great lengths to save a dog or a cat, as in the $50,000 dog rescue from the ship near Hawaii a few months ago, because they are useful to humans and have a long tradition as working animals and companion animals. I might not agree with the resouces used, but I can understand it. But rabbits? They're stupid, untrainable food items that are about as far from endangered as an animal can be. Who cares if little Sandy lets her pet rabbit go because she can't keep it anymore and it goes off to be coyote/bobcat/bird food? At least let little Sandy think her rabbit is out there hopping free in a nice warm green field instead of telling her point blank that she just killed her rabbit by the Bobcat execution method. It doesn't matter a bit that the rabbit got eaten, in fact it was good that it did.
We need to protect the key animals in the ecosystem, without caring whether they are cute or not. That's just a stupid lithmus test to use.
These people are whacked.

Cats and dogs are domesticated to be pets- which is why most people hold them dear. Like horses(except they are to be rode on).
Can you let a Rabbit loose in your home? toejam no, they'd crap all over the place and who knows what else. Kind of like monkeys.. who wants a monkey? They throw their own crap at you!
:)

Heeeehehehe... we EAT rabbits in Europe... heheheheeeee MWAHAHAHAAAHA... Excellent with "All-i-Oli" (garlic and olive oil) sauce...

Damn, now I'm hungry...

Cats and Dogs aren't pets everywhere, in some places they are food.
If intelligence is the deciding factor in what is allowed to live then there are alot of people who need to be put down immediately.

Hey Wulfe,
I have a 1 year old Dutch in my house. He's completely potty trained. Uses the litter box and actually chases my cat around the house..hehe.
-
I had a pet rabbit; he lived out side the house. He would come up and take food from my hands and enjoy being touched….and then my dogs .....................ate him.
It’s a freaking commercial, get a freaking life. Organization of 142 (?) brain dead tree hogging hippies. If they don’t like that commercial, create counter commercial promoting…saving rabbits. Some people have too much time on their hands.
-
Yeah I also had a pet rabbit.
He got along pretty well with my boxer dog, they lived, played, and even slept together for about four months.
One day, for some reason, the dog ate him.
-
that $50,000 was not to save the dog , it was to salvage the ship, the dog was a freebe
-
Wingnut, is a Dutch a Rabbit? I'm sorry, I don't know breeds of rabbits.
I'll admit, they are cute.. they make great pets when they are caged. But whenever those lil' bastards ran around they crapped all over the place... you guys have different experiences? Seriously! It was like training a salamander for me!
Just like hamsters, they are great caged... but when they get loose in the house, it ain't no good for nobody.
But you gotta admit, wild rabbits are some pretty tasty treats. (well, if you've had it before)
Kanth, I have a Shar-Pei... I've heard they're a delicacy in China, and other Asian countries... same as cats(Siamese esp.)... except I've actually seen (on the discovery ch) how they prepare them. It's disturbing to say the least.

WABBIT SEASON!
DUCK SEASON!

"....you're desthpicable."

Yea a Dutch is a small, about 5lb max, breed. Usually blk/wht.
I think my cat kinda urged him along. He was super young when I got him, and I think he just took to using the litter box because he saw the cat doing it.
People laugh when they come to my house by I'm 100% serious when I say he's never sprayed or left his pellets anywhere but the litter box. He doens't stay out all the time but I'll let him run around for hours in the evening.
Wild rabbits are good to eat, but the tame one's are just blahh..
:D
-
mmm... Rabbit's good eatin'.
But it's a pretty fitting ad for a SUV.
And it's pretty funny that the rabbit people are protesting the ad for giving a completely wrong image of the wilderness. Uh this is an SUV. There's no danger in the world that someone will take their Subaru and release Johnny Cottontail in the woods. ARe you kidding? Mom and Dad don't ever leave the suburbs! And if they did try to go out there, they'd probably roll the top-heavy heap of junk on the freeway offramp!
In all fairness, the rabbitteers have a point: you don't go releasing animals in ecosystems not built for them.
Perhaps some Australians would care to comment on releasing cute little bunnies in the wild?

is this a joke????
that is disgusting..... some people......argh!
i say demello[head] is mentaly SCREWD^

ROFLMAO OK, this is the first time I've had to use an inhaler to keep from convulsing into a stroke for something I've read here. LOL Damn Animal, I've read about cases where dogs will rape rabbits and then eat the rabbit to conceal the evidence. Not only is your dog a killer but he is also a rapist.

I think the real point here is that these activists are what results when you interfere with nature. In the good old days these vege-eaten-fuggers woulda either starved to death or been play toys for lions for about 30 seconds. What we need is Darwinian-Theory Police - sorta like ecopolice - but they knock off the tards like these hippies.
Rabbits are vermin here... every easter... well do a google search on Easter Bunny hunt Alexandra NZ :D
here wabbit wabbit muahahahahahah

A domesticated rabbit gets released and immediately eaten by a predator. So a wild rabbit gets spared that fate. Anyway you look at it, there is one rabbit more in the forrest.

Rabbits? Big deal. Saw a report about how Bass fishing is now cruel to animals.
SAVE THE AMOEBA!!
-
Gotta agree, anyone who is pro-Animal is a bigger idiot than Animal himself.
-
Nature is cruel. This does not equate to evil. Predators have existed since the dawn of time, and are absolutely essential to a healthy ecosystem.
As far as I know, there are only three types of animals in the world; predators, prey, and omnivores. Mankind appears to fit in the third category. I strongly suspect that the occasional predatory behavior exhibited by members of the human race is perfectly natural. I would rather be a participant than an observer any day.
Here's to Wile E. Coyote and Sylvester and Elmer! I'm pulling for ya guys!

I actually saw this add and thought, "These little fluffy bunnies do not look wild, WTF is mom doing letting loose a pet bunny in the forest?".
I would like an Aussie to respond to this thread. If I recall, rabbits are on a 30 year cycle down under. Their population builds for 30 years untill there are too many of them for the eco-system to support, they eat everything in sight and then starve to death by the millions. The very few that survive begin the proccess anew. Austrailia has been really screwed up by the importation of rabbits.
I lived in Hawaii for a year. The big fear there was snakes. If snakes were to make it to Hawaii, and get loose, they would thrive on the birds that have never lived with preditors. The Hawaian bird population would get wiped out in a few years they predicted.
The bottom line is; "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!"

I can see where these crazed-rabbit-folks are comming from (I certainly do not support them). Domesticated and tame animals can carry diseases that kill wild/native animals. There are problems in the Great Lakes with non-native species such as the Zebra Mussel and some type of lamprey. Australia has a very bad problem with cats and rabbits out-competing native species also.
-
So if the woman and her little kid released kittens into the wild that would be different?
-
Shuckins you forgot a couple:
Carrion-eaters
Parasites
Yeah, kinda like taking the family cat to the forest.
I have friends who are vegetarians. I respect their views and don't serve them meat; they respect mine and let me eat something in a casing in their presence.
And when we part company I go and get myself a big-ass steak :)

Be aware of innocent looking, cotton-like rabbits...

This makes me think about a Tom Hanks/Jackie Glisan film where Tom Hanks was an add exec. They were doing a commercial where a Grandma talks on the phone to here grandson and then flies to be with their family. Someone thought it would be cute to have a cat on her lap when she was talking on the phone.
Tom Hanks: "Oh great, why don't we cut back to the apartment after the grandma has been gone two weeks to show the starving cat trying to claw his way out" (something to that effect).
I always thought that was a funny scene.
