Title: Need help VVS Unit info
Post by: Wotan on June 13, 2002, 08:21:51 AM
What do the following unit indications mean?

IAK = ?
IAP = fighters ?
ShAP = ground attack ?
BAP = bombers ?
GvIAP = guards ?
GvShAP =guards ?

Whats the difference in a "guards" unit and a regular unit?

thanks in advance.........

IAK == "Isterbitel'niy Avia Korpus" == Fighter Aviation Corps.
IAP == "Isterbitel'niy Avia Polk" == Fighter Aviation Regiment.
ShAP == "Sturmovoy..." == Attacker...
BAP == "Bombardirovochniy..." == Bombers...
Gv == "Gvardeiskiy" == Guardian.

Edit: On your second question. "Guardian" is a decoration, which were awarded to units during the action. Usually it ment that unit in future got better pilots, better equipment, and were used at more hot places. I made a short compilation of history of 9 GIAP -- you can find it here:
