You can get eaten alive at a music store, or buy from someone you know.

For cheap I can put you in a nice Ibanez Roadstar II. Great beginner guitar. Hell, good as what you'd need for years.

For alot more I can put you in a pro Charvel – Flametop with
Jackson p/ups - h/bucker, single, single. Locking Floyd tremolo. Shark tooth inlays. It’s sweet.

(Got a great Zoom effects processor to boot if you really are interested.)

Would love to clear out this stuff for help with the wife's game setup and Cougar expenses.

Lemme know.

You get what you pay for.  Play before you buy, or if you don't play yet, bring a friend who does.  Getting whatever el cheapo they happen to have on sale can create a degree of frustration that can keep you from really pursuing it.  The thing you SHOULD do online is price check - don't get screwed!

The only time I would suggest you might be okay buying a guitar online or from a catalog is if you have played the model before, like it, and it is one of the top couple of names.

Damn 3 bassist goin to the con!  I switched back to bass after a 12 year vacation on guitar :)   Though my chops aren't quite what they used to be when I played in bands.

Finding an open mic night would be fun, but it would be more fun to make one at the con ;)

Hmmm... My "Main Axe" is a 1969 Fender Telecaster Custom, all original, bought in 1986 for a whopping $100 :)

so, I beg to differ. However, deals like that ARE few and far between, and you really have to know your guitars to boot.

I would NOT buy a guitar on ebay, or anywhere sight unseen. Even if you've never played a note iin your life, you still have to hold it in your hands and get a "feel" for it before you buy.

I also have to disagree with Creamo's advice - I'd start with an acoustic guitar, rather than electric. Going from acoustic to electric is a snap, and the acoustic will instill better playing habits.

Oh and, yeah, I do play guitar, among other things :) In fact, before I moved on to producing & engineering music for a living, I made my living teaching guitar & music theory.

Acoustical electric's rule.  You can learn to play without buying all the electronic stuff right off the bat, add it to be loud after you get good enough that the neighbors won't call the cops.  :D
Bought this in the mid 60's, ... don't even ask what it's worth today.  The more it gets waxed the sweeter it sounds.

MrBill,that's beautiful,what is it?
I have a Danelectro atm and love it,used to have a 1929 Martin accoustic,rosewood,why did i sell it :(
Agree with redant tho,get an accoustic to start, toughen's you up more quickly and ensures you fret note's properly...or else u get no sound :)

moose, well spoken brotha. I'm also a bassist.

Lessard is also my favorite bass player :)
was at a Dave Mathews Band concert in Staples stadium last month. The man has some mad skills. What the hell, the whole band has mad skills.

I'm saving some $ so I can buy a Warwick Dolphin, the Rolls Royce of bass guitars. Incidentally what Lessard uses, because he knows its the best there is.

Agree with Kratzer here. If you dont play, bring someone who does. Years ago when I was learning, I brought a feiend to help me pick one out. He had been playing for  a number of years and was able to explain the differences of sound/ quality/ price to me. I ended up with a Martin acoustic... cause it was what I was looking for. Heheh, and I did'nt really know it at the time.Cost about 700 bucks. But since then I have seen others that will come close ( but not "quite" the same) ranging in prices from 250- 500.  Hope this helps a little at least.

This has been my experience over the years with the exeption of the very few "$100 sweet deals"......

$200 and less = never going to stay in tune.  The intonation (sp?) will never be on.  Pick ups with have static from day one, all the hardware will rattle and may eventually fall off.  An example of these are any guitar you find in Kmart, walmart, most guitars in pawn shops or Fenders made in Japan.

$200-$400 = stays in tune with new strings once they get stretched out but the intoneation will never be spot on and the pick ups will still buzz, though maybe not at first.  IMHO these guitars make the best first guitar purchase.  As long as you stay in an climate controlled environment your axe should stay in tune for the most part.  Humidity hurst the worst with staying in tune.  A good example of this type is the Mexican made Fenders good guitars but no craftsmanship when putting them together and they use substandard parts.

$400-$700 =  ok now your getting into the good stuff.  There is still some garbage to be purchased in this price range but most of what you see is higher quality.  Guitar will stay in tune intonation can be put spot on.  All the hardware is of a higher quality.  Examples would be Jackson guitars, some fenders and some gibsons.  These are good "live" guitars.

$1000 and up = now your getting into the best of the beasts.  All hardware will be top quality and you can really feal the diference in that too.  Craftsmanship will be top notch too in assembly of the instrument.  This price range is my next purchase :)  Examples of these would be Gibson - Les Paul,  Fender - strats and tele's and custom guitars. These are great studio guitars...

There are so many guitar makers out there it can drive you batty.  I have mainly stuck with the big 2 Gibson and Fender and I have always been happy with them.  But there are many other and better guitars out there if your willing to pay the price ;)

Pawn shops are good places to find nice guitars for cheap.  However, be sure to play them first, or you could get screwed.  I bought a nice acoustic electric guitar and an acoustic electric bass from a pawn shop, and they are in great condition.
After playing on a crappy Mexican made Fender Stratocaster for 10 years, I'm finally going to be getting my dream guitar.  The Gibson SG!

[WARNING DRUG REFERENCE COMING]

Gretsch is the best guitar ever made.

When I was 21 I was in Job Corps.  We had a crappy music department with 25 year old equipment.  Well our drummer spent 6 months trying to get me to drop some acid with him.  Finaly one friday night I gave up and did it with him (i don't do that stuff anymore!!!!!!!).  We went to the music hall for our friday night jamm session as usual only in another dimension ;)  We started playing with the crappy old equipment when Mr. Jones (the 64 yr old African American head of the music dept.) comes in.  We though he was going to tell us to turn that crap down, but he comes in there and hands me his personal Gretsch!!!!!!  It was 30 yrs old or some nonsense I can't remember.  He let me play it allllll night long.  This was way out of charactor for him, he had once told me that I would never touch his guitar to play the filth that I play.

That guitar had the very best action of any guitar I've ever played.  It could have just been the substance abuse but I don't think so.    I do know that we have more people watching us play that night than any other time that I was in job corp.  I got a lot of repsect from the "brothas" after that night too :)  Seems they liked a cracka who can play jazz and blues as one of them put it that night :D

steely007:  It is a classic 50's Kay I don't remember the model offhand. Kay made all kinds of guitars from crappy to excellent. You had to play them to discover if you had a good one or a bad one.

udie: "Gretsch is the best guitar ever made"

Yep, double pick Pipeline on one and you can both hear and feel the difference.
Agree with udie's price chart also. I gave a months ssgt pay for the kay cause it felt and sounded right.  I have never been sorry bout the price.

Udie.. where'd  you go to JobCorps?
I went in Colorado.

btw PJ.. I really love my strat for being versatile.
Tele for certain sounds (great neck too)
and a fat ol gibson for smooth stuff.

overall I agree with starting on acoustic.
best habbits and much easier going from accoustic to electric instead of the other way around.

I also have to disagree with Creamo's advice - I'd start with an acoustic guitar, rather than electric. Going from acoustic to electric is a snap, and the acoustic will instill better playing habits.

Please. Of all the things in the AH crowd, I do in fact know this toejam.

After 12 years playing guitar I do know this. Start with an acoustic, you got 1 chance to sound hideous without cables, and you will. And for the money, a bad acoustic is indeed a given, you are going to sound bad. Enough to quit. Teachers that want all your money will claim “finger strength, and other stupid toejam”. No.

They are an instrument that just needs to be played well, completely in tune. It’s just not going to happen. The better ones can sound great, by the almost competent players. For $1000+ you’ll be in tune, and still do bad Eagles tunes impressions.

Get a mediocre electric and a half bellybutton effects processor; you can play AC/DC somewhat next week. The thing is, you will be happy by progress, and the teachers that tell you to drop the toejam and go acoustic, are still teaching ABBA songs and Hotel California while you whip out “Sanitarium” by Metallica! Plus you’ll be learning stuff that shreds!

Start electric, play electric, piss on the ABBA acoustic pay to learn tards.

Next thing you know, your playing Slayer and Rush, and chicks are not liking you.

It’s 2002 you know.

Gary Job Corps in San Marcos Tx it was a co-ed campus ;)  I loved "goin to the mud" :D   It was a 10 month waste of time except for the music department. Without the music I would have left after 2 weeks.  That's when I switched to guitar.  I learned good theory and 2 scales that taught me how to play most if not all rock and roll leads.

What creamo said is true too! but jazz is real fun to play too especialy my old band's jazz/rock/metal/blues fusion :)  otherwise known as acid jamms.

If you learn to play guitar, you can play bass.
If you learn to play bass, you can play... bass.  :)
So get a guitar.

No sense in starting out with an expensive guitar.
Get an acoustic and learn to play on that.

Go to a music store and get a cheap acoustic guitar and some kind of beginner book.  It's not going to be rewarding at first, but keep banging on it and you will get there.

PS  Creamo, you're a mechanic.
Red Ant is a guitarist.
Now STFU and go watch Blazing Saddles and advance your cultural literacy.

Funky, the nitrates in those corndogs are giving you super human confidence.

One who can play reign in blood, need not seek a label as a "guitarist". I'll take on any folk singer and a hoopty Hondo against Slayer and a Jackson anyday.

And don't squawk off about needing a acouistic. We don't need no stinkin acoustics. (The old sappy big nose Mel Brookes sucks btw)

I got my first of many slaps in 1967.

And Pongo speaks the truth. When the Mel Bay note reading just drives you to bash your acoustic against the wall, you can always do a distortion wammy dive bomb on a electric and think your pretty happen'in.

Here's the bottome line-

Get a guitar that you ENJOY playing.  One of the worst things that happens to a person with a lot of untapped talent, is they start out on a guitar that doesn't even tune well, it's an acoustic when they wanted Pantera, and it was plugged into the home stereo system instead of getting a proper amp (not always expensive).

First, start by deciding what kind of music you want to play, or inspires you.  There's no sense in getting a classical if you want to play country.  You will set yourself up for dissapointment when you realize that you bought the wrong instrrument, and then you get discouraged and never play something you could have been good at again.
Once you have decided what type of music you want to play, and what type of guitar to get (an acoustic with an internal pickup is perfect if your not sure, or have a wide variety of music that really gets your toe tapping)., then go shopping around.  Play on AS MANY GUITARS AS YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON.  You don't have to buy, but you will get a feel for certain brands, or body styles, etc.  Some will really turn you off, and others you will want to play and play and play.  Pay attention to this.
Then, when your better educated on what it is you want, start getting ready to buy.  AN UNEDUCATED IMPULSE BUY IN THIS WORLD ALMOST NEVER TURNS OUT GOOD AFTER A COUPLE YEARS.

HAVE FUN!

FYI-

If you go for an electric, the same rules apply for an amp, but make sure that you know what it's gonna sound like with the guitar you picked out plugged into it.

everything on 11.  one louder :)

Marshal rocks but is limited IMO.

if you want the best processor/amp simulator for the money get a POD.  the most awesome sounds I've ever recorded with and no need to mic the amp.

Jazz... I got into this thing a long time ago:  played only 'difficult' stuff.  Finally came to my senses and now I play what feels and sounds good.  BUT.. jazz taught me stuff I'd have never learned playing rock.  Hell, I even did a country stint.  NO distortion was a new thing to me at the time :)

Post by: Red Ant on June 14, 2002, 11:23:40 PM
Man, I HATE the Pod. Every sound in the world, rendered totally plastic & lifeless. The only "Amp Emulator" i've found that is worth anything is the "Amp Farm" plugin for ProTools. And as good as that is, it still doesnt come that close to a good amp.

And speaking of amps - since people are listing their toys ;)

1966 Fender Champ, blackface

1970s Fender Super Reverb, blackface

195? Fender Tweed, no name, 1 12'' - THE BEST friggin little amp I've ever owned

1968 Fender Tremoluxe Head, modified by Ron Gonzalez to where the "bright switch" now switches between two circuits: down is "'57 Bassman", up is "Marshall Plexi"

Seymor Duncan Convertible - an odd amp that i actually use a whole lot - variable power from 5 to 100 Watts, 1 15'' speaker, and lots of different tube "modules" you can stick into the amp.

Peavy "Classic 50", 2 x 12'' cones - a gigging amp - loud, indestructible & good sounding, but without much character

Gibson GA-10 - my little 10-watt tube practice amp.

"Just Say NO to Solid State!" :)

My guitars are a much simpler affair tho:

1969 Fender Telecaster Custom, all original, maple neck, natural wood color

1996 Custom Shop reissue of a 1962 Fender Stratocaster, powder blue, maple neck, no whammy bar ( i like my strat to stay in tune after i bend the crap out of the strings ;)

2000 Gibson J45 Accoustic

Sadly, I once owned the jazz guitar of my dreams, and it was stolen from me - it was a 1960's Gibson L5 with a floating pickup. MAN I miss that guitar! :(

Eek, Creamo is making perfect sense. I'm losing my insanity here.

- Michael Romeo wannabe for the past five years (and I don't even own a guitar, much less an amp, now beat that :D)

Animal you trade shows?

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on who I was talking about.

I've seen them a bunch of times and I still drop my jaw when Boyd Tinsley goes off on one of his solos.

Buying the guitar is really the cheapest part of the deal.

It doesn't really get expensive till you start blowing off work and job interviews to focus on your destiny as a rock star. :D

I've worked with quite a few guys who had been 'just working here (for 20 years) till my musical career takes off.'

Best to start to learn guitar on a steel strung acoustic.  If you can play an acoustic then you can play any electric guitar.

The Epiphone Gibson range are a good value for money guitar and sound rich, keep in tune and have a wonderful feel to them.  I don't know how much they cost in the states, but in the UK they start from around £200 - £800.
