3,000 window displays touting summer tea brews by depicting two "twin" cups of the concoction standing side-by-side in tall, squared-off blades of grass with dragonflies dive-bombing into one of them.

The words "Collapse into Cool" are printed above the image.

Sounds a lot worse in print than it looks.

People can brew anything they want in their dillisional minds.

Looks like a couple of posters I saw before Sept 11th at the nature store...

Of course, when you smoke crack you can invent anything in your warped little mind.

Some people need a serious beating with the common sense bat.

starbucks showed no guts in pulling the ad, bowing to pc bs in the extreme

then again all the hoopla probably put the ad in front of many more eyes than would have seen it otherwise thus making the ad campaign a success

seems like it would be a whole lot more effective (cost + effort) to focus our efforts on thickening the skin of the 'sensitive types' than for the rest of the world to walk on egg-shells around them

And YOU can do that with the power of your vote! ;)

I usually try to do it by being an abrasive, insensitive salamander most of the time.  Kind of a de-sensitivity exercise for the people around me.

Title: Here's what Starbucks had to say

Starbucks deeply regrets if this poster was in any way misinterpreted to be insensitive or offensive as this was never our intent. All retail stores in North America (United States and Canada) were instructed to pull the posters immediately and are in the process of doing so.

The Tazo Ice Blended Tea beverages represented on this particular poster are part of Starbucks blended beverage line-up that also includes Frappuccino Blended Beverages. Starbucks introduced Tazo Ice Blended Tea to accompany Frappuccino Blended Beverages. This poster is part of a larger summer campaign that includes over 30 pieces including print ads, radio ads, outdoor advertising and in-store posters.

The specific names of these beverages featured on the poster are Tazo Citrus and Tazoberry. The poster depicts product shots of the two beverages sitting on a field of green "grass"made with Starbucks signature green straws. The overall concept of the poster was to create a somewhat magical place using bright colors and fun, whimsical elements such as palm trees, dragonflies, butterflies and pinwheels. The headline "Collapse into cool, Try a new Tazo Citrus with tangerine, orange and lime." was meant to conjure up feelings of cooling off on a hot summer day.

Anyway... this is just as silly. (http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/tech/review/games/2001/09/14/attack-flight-sim.htm)

I guess this means they wont be printing up those car bomb posters featuring a Frappachino as a burning school bus.

when i looked at the poster i thought the "got to be kidding me "refered to starbucks (coffee people) selling iced citrus product, because i saw no referance to NY ,9/11, or trade towers, but then ,  i am not very "sensitive"

I had to read the thread to understand the issue.  These sensitive folks are the same ones who encourage their children, via liberal parenting, to become "John Walkers."

I work in advertising and publishing and I've seen a lot of insensitive thinly veiled references to tragedies (the m&m commercials of the mid-60s where one of the m&m's head turns red was a thinly veiled reference to the Kennedy assasination), but this poster- with the clipped grass and the dragonfly ramming the side of the tower- is one of the sickest things I've ever witnessed. It is obviously a reference to 9-11, at least to the highly trained eye.

Whoever designed that damn poster should be arrested as a prisoner of war and held in a military brig without trial until we have managed to kill the very last bad guy and developed a world without conflict. Only then should we try our detainees and execute them.

Now I'm not trying to be presumptuous, but I'd be willing to bet whoever designed that poster has darker skin than we do. And they probably are rooting for a country other than the USA to win the World Cup- most likely Turkey since France has been eliminated.

Personally I'm so upset with Starbuck's for employing terrorists in their advertising department that I'm organizing a boycott of not only Starbuck's but all coffee product retailers. I know you good Americans will join me in support of a boycott of terrorist coffee depots who cater to yuppies.

Is that NYPost.com part of the New York Post newspaper?  I certainly hope not.  The web page article looked like something from the National Inquirer.  Ripsnort, please tell us you're pulling a fast one on us.

Les

Wait a minute, I'm wrong...was thinking about the New York Times.  Haven't heard of the New York Post before.;)

The Land-O-Lakes girl is an old trick you can make up from the package.  It's a good one too, but not too many folks remember how to do it.

Would explain how to do it, but Fatty could probably do a better job.  I bet he knows a web site that shows how to do it.;)

Yesterday (or was it the day before?) my NCOIC brought Starbucks poster up on the computer and asked about 4 of us if we could see anything wrong with the picture.  After about 5 minutes of us looking for "waldo's" or trying to find the hidin Jesus in the clouds.. he told us there was nothing wrong with the actual picture..  then asked us to simply evaluate the poster and tell us what we thought.  NOBODY thought anything about 9/11 until he brought up the subject.

...funny, now that I think about it, I guess it "could" have been meant that way, however I very seriously doubt anyone would consider it smart advertising.

It would have been smarter to use bees hovering around the drinks:

"these drinks are sooo sweet, they attract bees."

Seriously-

Starbucks can't win...there's definitely people out to do the 'ol shakedown on Starbucks.  Their only mistake was in advertising posters.  Hate to see this kind of thing happen.  They should have known better.  Am guessing the artist who designed the poster will lose his/her job, along with a lost account for the Ad agency.  And probably the one on Starbucks' end who approved the ad...they'll be fired too.

If it wasn't a bad poster ad before, it is now...there's many ways to look at this, but I think Starbucks did the right thing withdrawing the ad.  Gutless yes, but smart in the long run.  You can't fight public opinion, which is formed by publications like the nypost.com web site.
