I wish to re-open my request for the Me-323 Gigant transport. It would be great for transporting light GVs to optimal attack points.
-
It could carry 200 troops + weapons + light guns (37-50mm anti tank guns) mortars etc. Or it could carry two Panzerkampfwagen 3 or one Panzerkampfwagen 4 (the one we have in AH).
-
323 could also carry SdKfz 7 with FH18 field cannon...
-
Hey cool:
Take a SdKfz 7 with FH18 field cannon, land at ur own "spawn point", let the GV out so one can be driven to their target, fly back.
Sounds interesting..,
-
This would be by far one of the COOLEST addistions to AH to happen. On the other hand, landing that monster between trees might prove and exercise in futility heheh... really have to trust the pilot if you were in the GV.
-
It's too big!!!

Wish I could play IL2 with your graphic Mitsu :)
Those guns in the wings aren't fun either, can tear you up pretty good.
-
Are you using ATI's truform or something?
Those pictures look twisted in some weird way.
-
wasn't there a glider version?
i really like the idea of being able to land GV any where..
especialy on the mindano map..
may be it could be a way of useing all the gv points we get..
-
It was originally designed as a glider and was used as such, being towed by 3 Me110's and later, the specialized HE111-Z (Twin HE111). Then the 6 engine version was made.
-
Too bad it never went operational, but there was an Me-323 specific bombload designed and in testing stages when the war ended.
It was, get this, an 18 ton bomb.
Ka-BOOOOM!
-
you mean one of these wilbus
-
Exactly :)
-
Hehe.
I think I first read about Gigant in a book called "world's worst airplanes". They would try to tow the glider with multiple fiters, with predictable results.

They used 3 110's, worked OK but once all planes crashed, killing all involved including a number of soldiers carried for testing purpose.
The engine Gigant version worked well although it was slow and easy to hit, but it took ALOT of dammage.

worked OK?
It would be AWESOME in MA though.
-
When it works good or great no accidents happen. To use 3 110's worked on most occasions thus OK, when something happaned it happaned BAD though. Once the HE111 Z arrived it worked good. Then the 6 engine version arrived and it worked even better.

I wonder if you could just push a 20,000 pound bomb out of the back of it...
-
I believe the Me 323 came about when somebody in the LW got the idea to take the original glider version (the Me 321) and slap four low-powered French surplus radials on it. It couldn't take off by itself at full load--it'd still need towplane(s)--but it could fly home on its own power after dropping off its cargo, and admittedly having some power available would make gliding it in much easier.
But in the end it was easier to put six engines on it and make it self-sufficient.

if you want a big transport, how about a spruce goose? i saw it at the evergreen air museum a few weeks ago. Gerald Johnson's P-38L was parked next to it. I think if you retracted the P-38's gear you could fit it inside the Spruce Goose's rudder... I think the goose was supposed to carry 800 troops

LOL! add some large blast radius and you have a nice base buster :D
