An attempt by two Middle
Eastern men to buy a fake ambulance spurred
authorities to issue warnings that terrorists may seek to
use bogus emergency vehicles as weapons, authorities
said.
About two weeks ago, two men walked into Movie Time
Cars Inc., a Lyndhurst company that rents replicas of
ambulances and police cars to TV and film producers.
The men offered to pay cash to buy a replica ambulance,
said Joe Sargo, the company's owner.
Sargo, suspicious, told the men he does not sell vehicles
to anyone. The men quickly left, but an employee jotted
down the license plate number of the car and called
police, Sargo said.
That triggered a series of alerts to police and rescue
agencies in northern New Jersey and New York that terrorists might seek to use
emergency vehicles or look-alikes to carry out attacks, said Sandra Carroll, a
spokeswoman for the Newark FBI office.
She said the FBI knows who the two men are and are seeking them for questioning,
but has not connected them to any terrorist organizations. She would not identify the
men but said they were confirmed to be Middle Eastern.
Carroll said the information from Lyndhurst police about the incident "was combined
with some intelligence that ambulances or police cars may be a target." Alerts were
sent to Bergen County and New York City police and rescue agencies to be on the
lookout for anyone trying to obtain an emergency vehicle or look-alike.
Movie Time does not have actual ambulances or police cars, but the replicas are
authentic enough that they can pass for the real thing, Sargo said.
"For all intents and purposes, what they wanted looked like an ambulance," he said.

Good for them. I have no problem with profiling. Put it this way...if white anglo saxon protestants were out there commiting terrorist acts and had vowed to kill any and all Arabs that they found I would understand it if I was profiled and given a hard time by authorities, or citizens in Arab countries.
These citizens may well have averted a terrorist operation...I them.
-
When we said we were going to profile people from arab countries, the arabs got in an uproar.
I look at it like this. This is OUR house and these our OUR rules. If I go to anybodies house and don't obey the rules and then tell them their rules are evil and rascist they will kick me out, rightfuly so.
Don't like the rules? Get out of my house.....
-
Good heads-up play by them. Of course, if I owned that shop and ANYONE came in there waving around cash and then "quickly left" when I didn't sell them one, I would be very suspicious of that. Regardless of country of origin.

We profile everyone we meet everyday!
Always have always will.
Every time I walk the streets and I see a girl she is profiled into the catagory of "Yes I would do her", "No way in hell would I do her" or "I would do here AND her Mom".
:D

ROTFLOL!

ever since Tim McVeigh blew up the Murrah bldg in OKC in '95 i've been profiling brush-cut, blond, ex-military white boys.
we can't be too careful...

"Don't like the rules? Get out of my house....."
So America is for whites only now?

So America is for whites only now?
No it's only for non-ambulance-buying-for-terrorist-purposes-camel-jockeys now.
-
Where in all the post did you get we don't want non whites in the US? I didn't see anyone write that. But when you have sleeper cell in the country and world wide looking to kill you, I think we take a closer look at who you are and what your up to. If your a law abiding person and up to no good, no problem. No matter who or where you or your family comes from.

What a completely stupid statement (given the subject).

I'm white and I get profiled all the time.
I'm 6'2", 250+ lbs., long hair, beard, usually in a black T-shirt, and jeans.
I stayed at the Marriott in KC and security followed me every time I left the room. Did it piss me off? Ya, but you live with it. And you don't sue people over it. I accept the fact that to some people I look like a thug and I GET OVER IT.
I'm not an Arab and I still get profiled. I'm not black but I'm profiled, so what?
Profiling people is just another way to say paying attention. Not all who fit the profile are troublemakers and not all troublemakers fit the profile.
We have limited resources and time to protect our families and ourselves; it only makes sense to pay the most attention to the people who fit the description of most of your problems.
I'm not saying you punish people for being in this group. And you don't use it as grounds for conviction if they are charged with something. You just watch them closer. It’s called managing your resources.
Not everybody in a ski mask is a robber. But if I were working the night shift at the 7-11 that’s the guy I'd be watching.
The battle goes not always to the strong, nor the race to the swift.
But that’s the way to place your bets.

That has an undeniable association with the truth. So why they still checkin Ray Charles shoes for plastique at the airport?
-
I congratulate that man for his diligence.
I would be EXTREMELY suspicous even if it was a blonde blue eyed canadian trying to buy a FAKE ambulance..with CASH.
Cash! That instantly rings a bell with a) this guy is rich or b)smell's like fish
Profiling my ass. Its common sense with a spice of recent events paranoia.

To appease the whiners who think it's not fair to only check the shoes of people who fit the profile of a middle eastern terrorist.
Same reason I saw a 300lbs (at least) blonde black woman get the "treatment" at the airport.
Same reason I've seen people in wheelchairs get "the treatment".
Same reason I've gotten the "treatment" (I decided not to use my official Military ID card and orders to get out of it)
Of course while all this random fair checking is going on (I usually see about 4 - 5 people per flight... non of which are Arab or even resemble middle eastern, let alone have an accent) who know's who slips by.
Thats why I PROFILE EVERYONE before I get on a flight. So sorry.. hate to sound racist but my life is worth more than some whiner's bellyachin. SO.. if that makes me a racist, then by god I'm a racist and proud of it.

So... When our western citizens or troops are, say, in Saudi Arabia they should follow local traditions of not drinking alcohol and women wearing veils?
Odd, I think this is not happenging at the moment but of course it is ok because Saudi's are savages?

Actually, I think you'll find the US troops do conform to these guidelines.
In fact, there is a case in the courts right now where a female pilot is suing because she was ordered to wear the veil by her superior officers.
During the Gulf War, I talked with members of my old squadron who told me they were only allowed non-alcoholic beverages. This in a squadron that rotates aircraft and crews continually and has "secret" bags that cannot be opened by any non-US authority. Still, they told me the rules were very strict, stated punishment extremely harsh, so they complied.
YMMV.

I can tell you as a female soldier who was stationed in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm, we most definitely HAD to conform to the local traditions. Including but not limited to having a MALE escort with me whenever I traveled into town.
When in Rome......
Yankee

YANKEE was that they MADE you have someone with you or was it YOU made someone come with you? AND did you get to pick the guy?:p
I can see it now.
YANKEE: Sorry Cpt. it's they way they do things here. I guess I need to take Sven the body builder with me.
-
Thanks Yankee and Toad :)
That's there house right Jochen? but I will say this, that if I had a "friend" at my house protecting me from my hostile neighbor who pointed guns at me, I'd bend the rules a bit for him to make him comfortable :)

Don't look for Jochen to re-post, he rarely corrects himself. :D

You forgot a couple, subjugating women and multiple wives.

BTW, I went to a USAF tech school in the '70s with Iranians and Saudis. Their appetite for partying put the American GIs to shame.

Yep, got to like a couple of the Iranians, often wondered what became of them.

I know what you mean, Apathy. I'm 6'1, weigh 200 pounds, have a beard, pink hair with yellow highlights, wear swim fins, a tutu and a sports bra and I get profiled all the time too. I complained to the police one time and they suggested I try to look more "normal," whatever that is, so maybe people of Middle European ancestry should make an effort to look less uh... (searching for a word here) "ethnic" and maybe more uh... (searching for another word here) "white."

2 of my oldest bestest friends in this whole world are from Iran. They came over in '79 right in the middle of the hostage crisis. Them 2 dudes went through all kinds of hell during that time. I got to learn their history and culture first hand and they are wonderful people. They are not arabs and HATE being associated with arabs, that goes for most Iranians I met. They speak a diferent language and have a diferent culture and believe it or not they are somewhat "westernised" in Iran. It's just their government that is whacked.
I had always hoped that one day the climate would change so that I may go there to check out the country. I doubt that will happen in my life time now :( About 8 years ago they went back for a month to visit. My friend Dariush almost didn't make it back. When they were at the airport in Tehran he almost got conscripted into the army. Luckily for him his family are rich pestatio farmers there and have lots of connections with the government (ie. they knew who to bribe) so he made it back home
They brought me back a piece of Persopolis. A little chunck of a column that was carved and etched by some Persian over 2500 years ago. Persopolis was the "castle" built by Darius I in 528 BC it was later burned by Alex the great when the great wimp Darius III fled in fear of his life (later lost his head) Ironicly Darius the II actually helped the Jews out, I believe it's in the bible too. Think he gave them back Isreal or something, I really can't remember the story.
It's a real sad deal for me to know they are part of the "Axis of Evil" but with the current theocracy thingy they have over there it's necessary. They are ruled by evil people :( Though ALL the Iranians I ever met would give me the shirt off their backs if I needed it, and they did this from time to time when I had troubles in life. They are a good people with a great history and culture. I hope we never go to war with them.....

We could talk Udie, I work closely with an Iranian engineer (who I might add, is one of the brightest, most intelligent humans I've ever been associated with) that came over in 1980, and had a hell of a time getting over too. After he arrived here, he went to the U. of Oregon and graduated from there.

Well I know one dirty little secret about what the women over there wear under their sari's or burka's what ever they are called, they wear Levi's :)

About 15 years ago (before I met the lovely 2nd Mrs. Tahgut) I took an Industrial Engineering class. This was a 1 week course from a private firm. It turns out I was the only person to show up. The instructor (Laila) and I proceded to meet on a daily basis and became quite friendly. She was Iranian and was one of those dark beauties with huge black eyes the disposition of an angel and an exremely agile mind. I completed the course 2 days early, but I stayed for the entire week anyway. :D

Come to think of it...I get profiled all the time too..
I have been profiled as being a rich, white, former slave owner..
But...my family never owned any slaves...honestly....I checked.
Can I sue someone?
-
Hell, I've been profiling ever since the 1983 Marine Bombing. Sort of a personal thing:(

I went to school with Saudis in the 90's.. it was the same then. They drank more than most and tried to pick up on every woman they saw. They too used the "when in Rome..." line. We tried to explain that the Romans weren't quite that bad.
-
I once stood next to someone at a bus stop that could have been Iranian.
So I guess, I feel justified in saying that, like Udie, I believe I should be able to strip seach them in my house.
-
Thrawn, as I'm opposed to racial profiling yet concerned over terrorism I've decided to strip search all people entering my property including UPS drivers and meter readers. I hope my Mom understands next time she visits.

>>let me see if i got this straight. the same guys that masterminded the incredibly well planned, complex attacks of 9/11, during this heightened state of alert, are just going to try to walk up in a public place and pay cash for an ambulance? well, thank goodness for those brave used car salesmen<<

FBI finds ambulance offer wasn't terror plot
Friday, June 21, 2002
BY ANA M. ALAYA AND JOHN P. MARTIN
Star-Ledger Staff
A report that two Middle Eastern men attempted to buy a replica ambulance from a Lyndhurst company earlier this month sparked a wave of concern yesterday about possible terror attacks during the July 4 holiday.
But by the end of the day, the FBI had located one of the men and determined that the incident had nothing to do with terrorism. Instead, FBI spokeswoman Sandra Carroll said, agents determined the prospective buyers were maintenance men with a legitimate business purpose in mind: They wanted a vehicle with lots of compartments to store their tools.

Kg45 you mean those Middle Eastern gentlemen weren't terrorists??? Hey, I thought ALL Middle Easterners were terrorists!! On the bright side, tho, I'm glad the FBI solved this misunderstanding before GW's crew managed to suspend more of our civil rights.
