Title: Anyone here a runner?
Post by: fdiron on June 20, 2002, 03:42:17 PM
I've been running for about two years now.  Have run quite a few 5k races.  Was injured a few months back training for a half-marathon.  Longest run I have done is 14 miles.

I ran cross country in high school - I wasn't very good at it though... don't have the build of a distance runner. :)

I've been running ever since I was in high school. These days I run about 2 miles 1,2 days a week for a good strong heart. On my gym workout days (4xweek), I only run 1 mile before hitting the weights (4 laps round average track) to warmup. Sometimes I alternate and do 1 mile then up and down this big hill (bout 75% of a mile) or I go for the glory and to hit 4 miles. I dont hit the weights on those days anymore though. Its too hard on the body at 30 throughout a long period of time (joints will give).

Basically I excersise almost every day.

Muuhahaha!!!

:D

Trying to get back to my college days standard when I ran 5 miles M,W,F and 10 on T,TH.  Longest run I ever did was about 27 miles or so.  I am trying to get back into long distance shape as I would like to run in a marathon.

Runner here, and former cross-country coach. I was a bit of a road racer, having run distances from 2 miles to marathon. Picked up running at the age of 30, very quickly became addicted. Used to train 80 miles a week during peak training, averaged 3,600 miles a year.

Yeah, I'm a runner. ;)

I developed a rather nasty heel spur on right at the base of my heel directly under my Achilles tendon. As you might guess, that, coupled with my age (40), has ended my racing career.

Times:

5K -> 15:33
8K -> 27:40
10k -> 33:10
1/2 marathon -> 1:14:14
marathon -> 2:43:44

Ran the 100th Boston- what a sight!

I was never the best, but I was lucky enough to be competitive.

I wish I could run.... guess I'm just not cut out for it.  Doesn't matter if I run a mile or 5 miles I always feel like I've been run over by a Mack truck when I'm done.  I'll push myself for weeks or even months at a time.. but eventually I'll give up and work harder in the wieghtroom or on a rower or bike or something.

Anyone know why this could be?  I mean.. I actually enjoy running to an extent.  I'm 35 now and it's exactly the same as when I was in High School.  Coach would push us (and I did it just to stay on the team)... however on most occasions I'd find myself hyperventilating while trying to drive home (just try driving when that happens), still happens unless I run at a snails pace.  I can work myself silly in the weightroom or walk for 10 miles at a fast pace with a ruck... but running just seems to really fek me up.

I'm still goin!..Ran the Ottawa Marathon a couple of months ago right in the middle of the Leafs/Senators playoff series!...Ran with a bunch of Toronto guys and whenever we saw someone in the crowd with a Senators jersey,we razz him/them and get a round of loud Boooo!'s from the crowd!...This was actually helpfull in the last 10k as we discovered that inflicting verbal pain on loser sports fans helped you forget how much pain your legs were actually in...:D

My PB's

5K..................18:10
10K................38:30
Half Mara..........1:28
Marathon..........3:26

"still happens unless I run at a snails pace. I can work myself silly in the weightroom or walk for 10 miles at a fast pace with a ruck"

I might get the terminology the wrong way around, so bear with me :).

It's because you need to run below your anaerobic threshold, which is around 75-80% of your max heartrate. If you stay below that threshold, your body can produce energy enough for longer periods of time, but when you go above, you will use the 'emergency' reserves.
Weight-work will do nothing for your heartrate, walking will, but it will be at the lower end.
So..most likely, you will have to start at snails pace and then work it up from there.Technique is most likely also a big factor.

FWIW's, I'm crap at running myself, but I have recently started cycling fairly seriously and they spend a lot of time talking about heartrates, etc.

Daff-

You have it right. And you are also correct, bikers pay very close attention to heart rate- but sometimes runners do, too. (I own a polar monitor, used it for both).

The thing I tell people about running is it isn't like you think it is, or should be. The worst mistake most people make is going out with the mindset it's supposed to hurt all the time. What you should do is run no faster than you can if you were trying to hold a conversation with a person running next to you. This means you are actually finding a pace where you are quite comfortable. If you get serious later on and want to train hard, you would still find that most runs in a week are comfortable. There would be only 2 or 3 days a week where the running would get uncomfortable.

Daff is right, going beyond your body's ability to provide oxygen is key (not to mention lactic acid buildup), but you also have to consider what distance you tried to start at, your weight, the type of shoes you're wearing, etc... If you are seriously competitive, you have to learn how to break your training up into phases. You have to plan long-term, and chart yourself a path to get there. One little-known thing about running is it is notoriously easy to get hurt, and taking off without a plan is a good way to do it.

Fdiron, how did you get hurt? Curious...

BTW, sorry if I went overboard. As I said, I coached CC for a few years but had to give it up due to job change. It's still in my blood. :D

Kieran..you broke 3:00 in a marathon! That is outstanding sir! All you couch potatoes out there, go try to run a mile in 6:20. Then do that 26 times in a row. Dam!

Same story as Rip...knees bug me when I run...got a clicky kneecap that bothers me if I run too much.  I used to run cross country in school and all that.

Lately, the hard workout nightly at UPS, eating right, and drinking lots of water have brought me from a weight of 241 last year, to 173 (as of this morning).  Slimmed down, working on toning up some.

Like walking at a brisk pace tho...gimme my walkman and I'll walk 5 miles easily...just keep the tunes rolling!  Or, if I have the dog with me, one squirrel and we're off into a sprint to get that bastid!  :D

See that nickname?

Started out as a competitive volleyball player, but at 5foot 7inches, 34 years old and getting older, I couldn't push like I wanted so I started running to get into some sort of better physical condition.  Won my age group once, PR of 24:30 in a 5k and was on my way to getting faster when the siren of beach volleyball started calling me.  Running is fun, but its not the social activity that volleyball is.  Now I juggle both sports and can't win in either one, but I feel great.

I've run 5k, 10k, and 15k, and ran both a 15k and then a 5k back-to-back last Winter.  I like the 10k distance the best: I can do it fast enough that it feels like a race, but its long enough to enjoy the trip.  5ks are over too quickly, and there aren't many 15ks held.  10k is the happy medium.

I prefer to train on grass, and then race on asphalt.  The grass saves the strain on my joints and since its a training run I can focus on the path instead of my pace.  When running on asphalt, I can focus on my pace and not worry about obstacles in my path.

I disagree on the social aspect- running is the most social sport I've ever done. I have made my best friends from the sport, and it was not uncommon to have a pack of us (6-8) trotting along, discussing politics, training ideas, etc.

MT-

I shouldn't have posted those times, I am quite unremarkable. There are some very good runners where I come from, I am nothing special.
